Spitalfields is a district in the East End of London and within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The area is formed around Commercial Street and includes the locale around Brick Lane, Christ Church, Toynbee Hall and Commercial Tavern. It has several markets, including Spitalfields Market, the historic Old Spitalfields Market, Brick Lane Market and Petticoat Lane Market. It was part of the ancient parish of Stepney in the county of Middlesex and was split off as a separate parish in 1729. Just outside the City of London, the parish became part of the Metropolitan Board of Works area in 1855 as part of the Whitechapel District. It formed part of the County of London from 1889 and was part of the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney from 1900. It was abolished as a civil parish in 1921.

Spitalfields est un quartier de Londres dans le district de Tower Hamlets. Il est peuplé aujourd'hui d'environ 130 000 habitants. Il fut bâti à la fin du XVIIe siècle, en 1681, autour d'un hôpital, par des réfugiés protestants français qui fuyaient les dragonnades. La révocation par Louis XIV de l'édit de Nantes en 1685 accentua l'arrivée de Français. La plupart d'entre eux étaient des tisserands ou négociants en soie, venus des centres de production de Tours, Lyon, ou encore Nîmes, où la municipalité avait développé la production de soie dès le XVIe siècle.

Spitalfields ist ein Stadtteil im östlichen Londoner Stadtbezirk London Borough of Tower Hamlets. In der Nähe befinden sich der Fernbahnhof Liverpool Street Station und die Brick Lane, die der Standort des von Einwanderern aus Bangladesch geprägten Sonntagsmarktes Brick Lane Market ist. Der Name des Stadtteils geht auf eine Zusammenziehung von hospital fields (deutsch „Spitalfelder“) zurück. 1197 war dort eine Abtei mit dem Krankenhaus St. Mary’s Spital gegründet worden. Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert gab es den traditionsreichen Obst- und Gemüsemarkt Old Spitalfields Market, der 1991 als New Spitalfields Market nach Leyton im Stadtbezirk Waltham Forest verlagert wurde. Aufgrund von Protesten der Bevölkerung wurde jedoch dieser historische Markt an einem Teil der alten Stätte erfolgreich wiederbelebt und zieht sonntags 20.000 Besucher an. Spitalfields ist heute u. a. bekannt als Marktplatz für biologisch erzeugte Lebensmittel.
