International Maritime Organization (Q201054)

The International Maritime Organization (IMO, French: Organisation Maritime Internationale; known as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization until 1982) is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping. The IMO was established following agreement at a UN conference held in Geneva in 1948 and the IMO came into existence ten years later, meeting for the first time in 1959. Headquartered in London, United Kingdom, the IMO currently has 174 member states and three associate members.

Die Internationale Seeschifffahrts-Organisation (engl. International Maritime Organization, IMO; franz. Organisation maritime internationale) ist eine Sonderorganisation der Vereinten Nationen (UN) mit Sitz in London. Ihre Gründung wurde schon 1948 beschlossen, die mehrfach geänderte Satzung trat jedoch erst 1958 in Kraft, am 13. Januar 1959 nahm sie ihre Tätigkeit auf. Bis 1982 führte sie die Bezeichnung Zwischenstaatliche Beratende Seeschifffahrts-Organisation (engl.: Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization, IMCO). Ihr gehören 174 Staaten als Vollmitglieder an (2016) sowie als assoziierte Mitglieder die Sonderverwaltungszonen Hongkong und Macau der Volksrepublik China sowie die staatsrechtlich zu Dänemark gehörigen Färöer. Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland trat am 7. Januar 1959 der IMO bei.
