Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly called James Island and St Andrew's Island, is an island in the Gambia River, 30 km (19 mi) from the river mouth and near Juffureh in the Republic of the Gambia. Fort James is located on the island. It is less than 3.2 km (2 miles) from Albreda on the river's northern bank. As an important historical site in the West African slave trade, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with related sites including a ruined Portuguese chapel and a colonial warehouse in Albreda, the Maurel Frères Building in Juffureh, and Fort Bullen and Six-Gun Battery, which are located at the mouth of the Gambia River.

La isla Kunta Kinteh[1] también llamada isla Jacobo o James (hasta 2011[1]), es una isla fluvial del río Gambia, que fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 2003, por contener numerosos vestigios de la penetración europea en África, desde el siglo XV hasta la independencia de aquel país. El cauce, que es navegable por un largo trecho, constituye la primera ruta comercial hacia el interior del África occidental y, más tarde, una base para el comercio de esclavos. Los vestigios de este tráfico constituyen, no sólo un importante patrimonio histórico, sino también un símbolo para la Diáspora africana. Su nombre inglés James fue cambiado en 2011 a Kunta Kinteh para darle un nombre gambiano a la isla.[1]
