The British Academy is the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and the social sciences. It was established in 1902 and received its royal charter in the same year. It is now a fellowship of more than 1,000 leading scholars spanning all disciplines across the humanities and social sciences and a funding body for research projects across the United Kingdom. The academy is a self-governing and independent registered charity, based at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace in London.

Son nom complet est The British Academy for the Promotion of Historical, Philosophical and Philological Studies. Elle peut être considérée comme l'équivalent britannique de l'Académie des sciences morales et politiques et de l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres (sections de l'Institut de France) réunies.

Die British Academy [vollständiger Name: British Academy for the Promotion of Historical, Philosophical and Philological Studies] (deutsch Britische Akademie) ist eine britische Gelehrtengesellschaft zur Wissenschaftspflege mit über 1000 gewählten Mitgliedern. Sie dient als nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften des Vereinigten Königreiches für die Geisteswissenschaften. Sie wurde 1902 durch königliches Privileg (Royal Charter) gegründet mit Sitz in Carlton House Terrace, London. Ihr erster Sekretär war der Philologe und Literaturwissenschaftler Israel Gollancz, nach dem der „Sir Israel Gollancz Prize“ benannt wurde, der erstmals 1925 vergeben wurde.
