Newgate was one of the historic seven gates of the London Wall around the City of London and one of the six which date back to Roman times. Newgate lay on the west side of the wall and the road issuing from it headed over the River Fleet to Middlesex and western England. Beginning in the 12th century, parts of the gate buildings were used as a gaol, which developed into Newgate Prison

Newgate (« La Porte neuve »), située naguère à l'extrémité ouest de Newgate Street, était l'une des sept portes historiques de la Cité de Londres, et l'une des six qui remontaient à l'antique Londinium de l'époque romaine. Partait de là une voie romaine qui menait vers Silchester, à plus de 70 km à l'ouest de Londres. Des fouilles menées en 1875, 1903 et 1909 ont révélé la structure romaine et montré qu'elle consistait en une double voie flanquée de deux tours carrées occupées par des gardes^,.

Newgate war ein Stadttor im Westen der römisch/mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer von London. Es lag zwischen dem westlicheren Stadttor Ludgate und dem östlicheren Aldersgate. Von 1188 bis 1902 befand sich am Newgate das berüchtigte Newgate-Gefängnis. Heute steht an dieser Stelle der Strafgerichtshof „Old Bailey“.
