The municipal community of Aianis is classified as an urban semi-mountainous settlement, with an area of 52,583 km² (2011). The 2011 census recorded 2,006 residents in the village and 3,429 residents in municipal unit of Aiani. The municipal unit has an area of 156.004 km², the community 52.336 km².

Ο Δήμος Κοζάνης είναι δήμος της Περιφέρειας Δυτικής Μακεδονίας, ο οποίος συστάθηκε το 2011 από τη συνένωση των προϋπαρχόντων δήμων Αιανής, Δημητρίου Υψηλάντη, Ελιμείας, Ελλησπόντου και Κοζάνης. Σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2011 έχει πληθυσμό 71.388 κατοίκους , ενώ με την απογραφή του 2001, πριν ενσωματωθούν οι όμοροι δήμοι είχε 49.812. Βάσει της απογραφής του 2021 ο πληθυσμός του Δήμου Κοζάνης ανέρχεται πλέον σε 67.224 κατοίκους .

Η Σταυρωτή είναι ημιορεινό χωριό της Κοζάνης σε υψόμετρο 350 μέτρα. Ήταν γνωστή με το όνομα Χασλάρ ή Χασιλάρ στα χρόνια της τουρκοκρατίας και το 1827 υπήρχαν 20 σπίτια μουσουλμάνων. Μετονομάστηκε σε Σταυρωτή το 1928 με το ΦΕΚ 156Α-08/08/1928. Με την ανταλλαγή των πληθυσμών το 1923, εγκαταστάθηκαν 52 οικογένειες (239 άτομα) προσφύγων από τη Μικρά Ασία.

Το 1688 ιδρύθηκε η Δημοτική Βιβλιοθήκη της Κοζάνης, η οποία θεωρείται ιστορική βιβλιοθήκη όχι μόνο στην Ελλάδα αλλά και στα Βαλκάνια.
