The Kuhistani Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Tajik: Вилояти Мухтори Кӯҳистони Бадахшон, Viloyati Mukhtori Kŭhistoni Badakhshon; also known as Gorno-Badakhshan, , after Russian: Горно-Бадахшанская автономная область, romanized: Gorno-Badakhshanskaya avtonomnaya oblast', abbrev. GBAO) is an autonomous region in eastern Tajikistan. Located in the Pamir Mountains, it makes up 45% of the land area of the country but only 3% of its population.
Zorkul (or Sir-i-kol, Syr Kul, Kol-ye Zor Kol, Kōl-ye Zor Kōl, Lake Victoria, Ozero Zorkul', Ozero Zorkul’, Sar-i-Kol, Sar-i-Kul,...) (Russian: Зоркуль; Tajik: Зоркӯл/ Tajik latin script: Zārkul; Chinese: 佐库里湖) is a lake in the Pamir Mountains that runs along the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It extends east to west for about 25 km. The Afghan-Tajik border runs along the lake from east to west, turning south towards Concord Peak (5,469 m), about 15 km south of the lake. The lake's northern half lies in Tajikistan where it is protected as part of the Zorkul Nature Reserve. Out of the lake, towards the west, flows the Pamir River, tracing the Afghan-Tajik border. It is therefore a source of the Amu Darya or Oxus River. The Great Pamir extends to the south of the lake.
Mount Garmo (Tajik: Қуллаи Гармо, Qullai Garmo, Russian: пик Гармо, pik Garmo) is a mountain of the Pamirs in Tajikistan, Central Asia, with a height reported to be between 6,595 metres and 6,602 metres.
Darvoz District (Russian: Дарвазский район, Tajik: Ноҳияи Дарвоз Nohiyai Darvoz) is a district in Tajikistan, located at the extreme north-west of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. It borders on Afghanistan to the south, along the Panj, and within Tajikistan on Khatlon Region to the west and on the Districts of Republican Subordination to the north. Its administrative capital is Qal'ai Khumb. The population of Darvoz district is 24,000 (1 January 2020 estimate). The district was historically part of the Darvaz principality, a semi-independent statelet ruled by a mir.
Yashilkul is a freshwater lake in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, in southeast Tajikistan, about 130 kilometres (81 mi) east of the provincial capital of Khorugh. Lying in the upper Gunt valley of the Pamir Mountains, it has an area of 3,600 hectares (8,900 acres) with a maximum depth of 52 metres (171 ft). It lies 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) from a similar lake, Bulunkul, both of which are surrounded by other wetlands as well as sand and pebble plains. The lake forms part of the Bulunkul and Yashilkul lakes and mountains Important Bird Area.
Vanj District or Nahiya-e Vanj (Tajik: Ноҳияи Ванҷ) is a district in eastern Tajikistan, in the north-west of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, with administrative capital Vanj.
Ishkashim District is one of the 28 districts of Badakhshan Province in eastern Afghanistan. The capital is the city of Ishkashim (also: Eshkashem, Ashkāsham; Pashto: اشکاشم). The people of the region are called Tajiks and some of them speak the Ishkashimi language. The total population of the district is approximately 11,000 residents.
Qal'ai Khumb (Russian: Калаихум, Tajik: Қалъаи Хумб, Qal‘a‘i Xumb/Qal'haji Xumв - meaning fortress on the banks of the river of Khumb) or Qal'a-i-Khum, also Kalai-Khumb (transliterated from Russian: Калай-Хумб), is a small town located in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region in Tajikistan on the border with Afghanistan. Formerly it was the capital of the independent statelet of Darvaz. Now it is the capital of the Darvoz District of Tajikistan. Here the Pamir Highway meets the Panj River.

В годы Советской власти жители кишлака Бардара, чтобы попасть в районный центр преодолевали путь пешком. Товары и необходимые продукты доставлялись до кишлака на ишаках. В кишлаке полностью отсутствовало электричество. После распада СССР местные жители по своей инициативе и своими силами, вручную построили грунтовую автомобильную дорогу от долины Бартанга до кишлака по долине реки Бардара, которая намного улучшила жизнь этих людей. The Fedchenko Glacier (Russian: Ледник Федченко) is a large glacier in the Yazgulem Range, Pamir Mountains, of north-central Gorno-Badakhshan province, Tajikistan. The glacier is long and narrow, currently extending for 77 kilometres (48 mi) and covering over 700 square kilometres (270 sq mi). It is the longest glacier in the world outside of the polar regions. The maximum thickness of the glacier is 1,000 metres (3,300 ft), and the volume of the Fedchenko and its dozens of tributaries is estimated at 144 cubic kilometres (35 cu mi)—about a third the volume of Lake Erie.

Karakul, Qarokul (Kyrgyz for "black lake", replacing the older Tajik name Siob; Russian: Каракуль; Tajik: Қарокӯл) is a 25 km (16 mi) diameter lake within a rather large 52 km (32 mi) impact crater. It is located in the Tajik National Park in the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan.
Lenin Peak (Kyrgyz: Ленин Чокусу, Lenin Çoqusu, لەنىن چوقۇسۇ; Russian: Пик Ленина, Pik Lenina; Tajik: қуллаи Ленин, qulla‘i Lenin/qullaji Lenin, renamed қуллаи Абӯалӣ ибни Сино (qulla‘i Abûalî ibni Sino) in July 2006), or Ibn Sina (Avicenna) Peak, rises to 7,134 metres (23,406 ft) in Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO) on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and is the second-highest point of both countries. It is considered one of the less technical 7000 m peaks in the world to climb and it has by far the most ascents of any 7000 m or higher peak on Earth, with every year seeing hundreds of mountaineers make their way to the summit. Lenin Peak is the highest mountain in the Trans-Alay Range of Central Asia, and in the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan it is exceeded only by Ismoil Somoni Peak (7,495 m). It was thought to be the highest point in the Pamirs in Tajikistan until 1933, when Ismoil Somoni Peak (known as Stalin Peak at the time) was climbed and found to be more than 300 metres higher. Two mountains in the Pamirs in China, Kongur Tagh (7,649 m) and Muztagh Ata (7,546 m), are higher than the Tajik summits.
Ishkoshim (Tajik: Ишкошим), also Ishkashim (Russian: Ишкашим), is a village and a jamoat in south-east Tajikistan. It is the seat of Ishkoshim District in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The jamoat has a total population of 7,673 (2015). It lies on the river Panj, at the point where its direction turns sharply north. Ishkoshim lies opposite a town of the same name in Afghanistan, although the name of the Afghan town is normally transliterated Ishkashim. A bridge opened in 2006 links the two towns. There are plans to reconstruct the 100-km highway connecting Ishkoshim to the regional capital Khorugh, which has been damaged by snow avalanches.
Murghob (Tajik: Мурғоб; Russian: Мургаб Murgab, from the Persian word margh-ab meaning "prairie river"), formerly Pamirski Post is the capital of Murghob District in the Pamir Mountains of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, Tajikistan. With a population of 4,000, Murghab is about the only significant town in the eastern half of Gorno-Badakhshan. It is the highest town in Tajikistan (and of the former Soviet Union) at 3,650 m above sea level. It located at the point where the Pamir Highway crosses the river Murghab. Murghob is the main village of the jamoat Murghob, population 7,468 (2015).
Sarez Lake (Russian: Сарезское озеро; Tajik: Сарез) is a lake in Rushon District of Gorno-Badakhshan province, Tajikistan. Length about 75.8 kilometres (47.1 mi), depth few hundred meters, water surface elevation about 3,263 metres (10,705 ft) above sea level and volume of water is more than 16 cubic kilometres (3.8 cu mi). The mountains around rise more than 2,300 metres (7,500 ft) above the lake level.
Karl Marx Peak (Russian: Пик Карла Маркса; Tajik: Қуллаи Карл Маркс) rises to 6,723 m (22,057 ft) in the Shakhdara Range in Pamir Mountains, in the south-west of Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province (eastern part of Ishkoshim district), just north of the Panj River and the Afghanistan border. It was named after the German philosopher Karl Marx whose theories were the basis of communism and socialism. The highest summit in the Shakhdara Range, it was discovered and named in 1937 by Soviet geologist and explorer of South-West Pamir Sergey Klunnikov. The ascent was delayed by the outbreak of World War II, and Karl Marx Peak was first climbed in 1946 by a group of Soviet alpinists led by Evgeniy Beletskiy.
The Kulma Pass (Tajik: Перевал Кульма, Chinese: 阔勒买山口) or Qolma Pass, also referred to as Karasu Pass, is a mountain pass across the Pamir Mountains on the border between Murghob District, Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region in Tajikistan and Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, Kashgar Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China. Asian Highway AH66 runs through the pass, which provides for the only modern day overland border crossing along the 450 km boundary between the two nations.
The Ak-Baital Pass is a mountain pass in the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan. At 4,655 metres (15,272 ft) it is the highest point of the M41 highway.
Engels Peak is a mountain in the Shakhdara Range of the South Western Pamir Mountain System. The mountain is flanked by Glacier Naspar (5.1 km2) in the north and Kishtidzharob Glacier (8.3 km2) in the south.
Kyzylart Pass (Kyrgyz: Кызыл-Арт ашуусу) is a mountain pass and border crossing in the Trans-Alay Range on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The highest point is 4,280 m (14,042 ft). The area is typically rugged and dry. It is crossed by the Pamir Highway which leads south from Sary-Tash in the Alay Valley up onto the Pamir plateau toward Karakol Lake and Murghab, Tajikistan. In the late nineteenth century the Russians explored and eventually occupied the Pamir plateau.
Independence Peak or Qullai Istiqlol (Tajik: Қуллаи Истиқлол), at 6,940 m (22,769 ft), is the seventh-highest peak in the Pamir Mountains, located at the center of Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, above the source of the Yazgulem River in the Yazgulem Range. The mountain consists of three snow- and ice-covered summits and its northwest face is the source of the Fedchenko Glacier.
Roshtqal'a District or Nohiya-i Roshtqal'a (Russian: Рошткалинский район, Tajik: Ноҳияи Роштқалъа, also spelled Roshtkala from Russian transliteration) is a district in eastern Tajikistan, in the south-western part of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). It stretches along the river Shakhdara between the Shughnon Range to the north and the Shakhdara Range to the south, enclosed within GBAO, without international borders. The population of Roshtqal'a district is 27,400 (January 2020 estim.). Its administrative capital is the village Roshtqal'a in the west part of the district, about 30 km south-east of the regional capital Khorugh.
Rushon District (Russian: Рушанский район Tajik: Ноҳияи Рӯшон, Nohiyayi Rushon, IPA: [nɔːhijaˈji rɵˈʃɔːn], Persian: شهرستان روشان Ręxonzemath) is a district in east Tajikistan, in the west-central part of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). It stretches along the river Bartang between the Yazgulem Range to the north and the Rushon Range to the south. Its capital is Rushon, also known as Vomar (pronounced: vamar), situated on the border with Afghanistan, 65 km north of Khorugh (the capital of GBAO) along the river Panj and the Pamir Highway. The population of Rushon district is 25,800 (1 January 2020 estimate).
Shughnon District (Russian: Шугнанский район, Tajik: Ноҳияи Шуғнон Nohiyai Shughnon, Shughni: Xuɣ̌nůn noiya}}) is a district in eastern Tajikistan, in the central-western part of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). It is bordered by the river Panj and Afghanistan on the west, the Rushan Range and Rushon District on the north, Murghob District on the east and the Shughnon Range and Roshtqal'a District on the south. It corresponds to the valley of the river Gunt. The district seat is the village Vahdat. The population of Shughnon District is 38,000 (1 January 2020 estimate).
Murghob District or Marghov noyaa (Russian: Мургабский район, Tajik: Ноҳияи Мурғоб) is a district in Tajikistan, occupying the eastern two-thirds of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). The area of Murghob District is 37,300 km2, covering 26 percent of Tajikistan's soil, but only 0.17% of its population. Murghob District borders on Kyrgyzstan to the north, China to the east, and Afghanistan to the south. The population of Murghob District is 15,900 (1 January 2020 estimate). Its administrative capital is the village Murghob (also known as Murghab).

Patkhor Peak (also Patkhur, Tajik: Паххор) is a mountain in Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province. At 6,083 metres (19,957 ft) it is the highest point in the Rushan Range, a subrange of the Pamir Mountains.

Vanj lies on the lower course of the river Vanj, a tributary of the Panj, separated from the Yazgulem to the south by the Vanj Range. The jamoat, which is also called Abdulloev, has a total population of 11,217 (2015).

The Medvezhiy Glacier (Russian: ледник Медвежий; Bear Glacier) is an Alpine glacier in Tajikistan. The glacier is located on the western slope of the Academy of Sciences Range at the heart of the Pamir Mountains.

The Beyik Pass, also written and Payik Pass and Bayik Pass, is a mountain pass in the Sarikol Range between Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province in Tajikistan and the Taghdumbash Pamir region of Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang, China. It is situated at an elevation of 4,742 metres (15,558 ft). There is an ethnic Kyrgyz village on the Chinese side with the same name (Chinese: 排依克村), though the village is more commonly referred to by a different name in Chinese (Chinese: 阿特加依里村) and Beyik is reserved for the border guard outpost.
Concord Peak or Pik Soglasiya is a mountain of the Pamirs, on the Afghan-Tajik border, about 15 km (9 mi) south of Lake Zorkul.
Kurumdy Mountain is a mountain in the Pamir Mountains of Central Asia, in the eastern section of the Trans-Alay Range. Kurumdy (Kurumdy I summit) has an elevation of 6,614 metres (21,699 ft) above sea level and sits on the international border between Kyrgyzstan and China.

Alichur is a jamoat (municipality) and village in Murghob District, Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, Tajikistan. The population of the jamoat is 2,422 (2015). The name of the village means Ali's curse and is reputed to have been spoken by the prophet's son-in-law Ali on a journey through the area, on account of the harsh climate and penetrating winds there.
The Tajikistan–Afghanistan Friendship Bridge connects the two banks of Darvaz region across the Panj River (further downstream known under the name Amu Darya) separating Tajikistan and Afghanistan, at the town of Qal'ai Khumb. It was opened on 6 July 2004.
The Tajik–Afghan bridge at Tem-Demogan was opened on 3 November 2002. It spans the Panj River. It was the first of four bridges planned to be built with the assistance of the Aga Khan Foundation.

Vahdat (Russian: Вахдат; Tajik: Ваҳдат, formerly: Midenshor Tajik: Миденшор; Persian: میدنشار), is a village in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region in south-east Tajikistan. It is the seat of Shughnon District.

Drumkul, also spelt Dirumkul, is an artificial freshwater lake in southern Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province in eastern Tajikistan. The lake and its surrounds have been identified by BirdLife International as a 380 km2 Important Bird Area (IBA).

Turumtaykul, also spelled Turumtaikul, is a freshwater mountain valley lake in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, in the south-east Tajikistan, about 110 kilometres (68 mi) east of the provincial capital of Khorugh. Lying in the Pamir Mountains at 4,202 m (13,786 ft) above sea level, it is 7 by 2 km (4.3 by 1.2 mi), and has an area of 900 ha (2,200 acres) with a maximum depth of 18 m (59 ft). Its most numerous fish are Sattar snowtrout and False osman. The lake forms part of the Djavshangoz Important Bird Area.

Ishkoshim District or Nohiya-i Ishkoshim (Russian: Ишкашимский район, Tajik: Ноҳияи Ишкошим) is a district in eastern Tajikistan, in the extreme south-west of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). It borders Afghanistan along the river Panj to the south and to the west. The population of Ishkoshim district is 32,900 (1 January 2020 estimate).
Khorugh State University (also known as Khorog State University), is a public university located in Khorugh, GBAO, Tajikistan. It is located in the center of Khorugh (the capital of GBAO), the only urban center in the region. The University has an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students, both full-time (daytime) and students studying by correspondence.
Vrang (Tajik: Вранг) is a village and jamoat located in the Wakhan region of Tajikistan. It is located in Ishkoshim District in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The jamoat has a total population of 6,541 (2015).
