The Battle of Thebes took place between Alexander the Great and the Greek city-state of Thebes in 335 BC immediately outside of and in the city proper in Boeotia. After being made hegemon of the League of Corinth, Alexander had marched to the north to deal with revolts in Illyria and Thrace, which forced him to draw heavily from the troops in Macedonia that were maintaining pressure on the city-states of southern Greece to keep them in subjection.

Ποηγουμένως όμως, οι Έλληνες, που στην είδηση της δολοφονίας του Φιλίππου, είχανε χαρεί τόσο πολύ, ώστε αρνούμενοι να τον αναγωρίσουν ως διάδοχο του θρόνου και «στρατηγό αυτοκράτορα», επιχείρησαν αμέσως να αποστατήσουν. Ο Αλέξανδρος αφού διεσφάλισε τα σύνορά του προς Νότον και Βοράν αποφάσησε να πράξει χωρίς χρονοτριβή. Εφόσον οι Θηβαίοι στο πλαστό άκουσμα του θανάτου του είχαν εξεγερθεί, έπρεπε να τους απαλείξει από προσώπου γής.
La bataille de Thèbes désigne le siège et la destruction complète de la cité grecque de Thèbes en décembre 335 av. J.-C. La cité se révolte contre la domination macédonienne imposée par Philippe II. Alexandre le Grand, jeune roi de Macédoine alors en guerre contre des tribus illyriennes, intervient rapidement afin de mater le soulèvement. Abandonnée par ses alliés, Thèbes combat seule la puissante armée macédonienne. Vaincue, la cité est partiellement détruite sur ordre d'Alexandre.
