During the apartheid era it formed part of the KwaZulu homeland, and at present it is included in the Umzinyathi District Municipality. The town's name commemorates the ferry which once operated here before a steel bridge was constructed.

Tugela Ferry is 'n dorp geleë in die middel van KwaZulu-Natal, Suid-Afrika. Die nedersetting, wat een van die armste in die land is, is ook in die voormalige tuisland KwaZulu geleë. Die dorpie is 30 km suid van Pomeroy en langs die Tugelarivier. Die naam is ontleen aan die pont wat gebruik is om oor die Tugelarivier te gaan voor die enkellaanstaalbrug gebou is.
