山田寺（やまだでら）は、奈良県桜井市山田にある法相宗の寺院。山号は大化山。本尊は十一面観音。一般的には、かつてここにあった古代寺院を指す。蘇我倉山田石川麻呂の発願により7世紀半ばに建て始められ、石川麻呂の自害（649年）の後に完成した。法号を浄土寺または華厳寺と称する。中世以降は衰微して明治時代初期の廃仏毀釈の際に廃寺となった。その後、1892年（明治25年）に小寺院として再興されている。

Yamada-dera (山田寺) was a Buddhist temple established in the Asuka period in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, Japan. The area was designated a National Historic Site in 1921, with its status elevated to a Special National Historic Site in 1952. It also forms part of a grouping of sites submitted in 2007 for future inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Asuka-Fujiwara: Archaeological sites of Japan’s Ancient Capitals and Related Properties. Excavations in the 1980s uncovered a well-preserved section of the temple's covered corridors that predate the surviving buildings of Hōryū-ji: "for the history of Japanese architecture, this discovery is of as great moment as the finding of the seventh-century Takamatsuzuka tomb paintings in March 1972 was for the history of Japanese art."

La zone est désignée bien culturel important au titre de « site historique spécial » et fait partie d'un regroupement de sites soumis en 2007 pour l'inscription future sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO : sites archéologiques des anciennes capitales du Japon et biens associés (en)^,^,. Des fouilles dans les années 1980 ont révélé une section bien préservée des kairō (couloirs couverts) antérieurs aux bâtiments survivants du Hōryū-ji : « Pour l'histoire de l'architecture japonaise, cette découverte est aussi importante que celle des peintures du kofun de Takamatsuzuka du VII^e siècle en mars 1972 l'est pour l'histoire de l'art japonais. »
