Trabzon, historically known as Trebizond, is a city on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Turkey and the capital of Trabzon Province. The city was founded in 756 BC as "Trapezous" Tραπεζούς by colonists from Miletus. It was included into the Achaemenid Empire by Cyrus the Great and was later part of the independent Kingdom of Pontus that challenged Rome until 68 BC. Thenceforth part of the Roman and later Byzantine Empire, the city was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, one of the successor states of the Byzantine Empire after the Fourth Crusade in 1204. In 1461 it came under Ottoman rule. During the early modern period, Trabzon, because of the importance of its port, again became a focal point of trade to Persia and the Caucasus. Today Trabzon is the second largest city and port on the Black Sea coast of Turkey with a population of almost 300,000.

Trabzon (deutsch historisch Trapezunt, neugriechisch Τραπεζούντα Trapezoúnda, altgriechisch Τραπεζοῦς Trapezoús/Trapezús) ist eine Stadt im Nordosten der Türkei und deren östlichste große Hafenstadt am Schwarzen Meer. 2021 hatte die Großstadtkommune Trabzon insgesamt 816.684 Einwohner und das Stadtzentrum Ortahisar 334.228 Einwohner. Die Großstadtkommune ist flächenidentisch mit der gleichnamigen Provinz. Die Stadt ist Umschlagplatz für den Export von im Umland angebauten Haselnüssen, Tee und Tabak.

Trabzon (Grieks: Τραπεζούντα, Trapezounta), historisch bekend als Trebizonde, is een stad aan de noordoostkust van Turkije. Het is tevens het hoofdstaddistrict van de gelijknamige provincie. De stad telt 230.400 inwoners (2009) en ligt in een vruchtbare kuststreek aan de Zwarte Zee, waar een gematigd zeeklimaat heerst. Hoge bergen scheiden de stad van het binnenland van Anatolië. Trabzon was een prominente plaats aan de Zijderoute en werd in de eerste helft van de 19e eeuw van groot belang voor de internationale handel tussen Europa en Azië. De opening van het Suezkanaal in 1869 bracht een eind aan de intensieve internationale handel in de stad. Toch is het een belangrijke haven aan de Zwarte Zee gebleven voor transport richting de Kaukasus en Iran. Trabzon is daarnaast ook cultureel, historisch en sportief gezien de belangrijkste stad aan de zuidkust van de Zwarte Zee en geldt derhalve als de onofficiële hoofdstad van de Pontus (de Turkse Zwarte Zeestreek Karadeniz). De bijnaam van de stad is Klein Istanboel of Klein Constantinopel, vanwege haar keizerlijke geschiedenis (Grieks keizerrijk Trebizonde). Sinds de lokale verkiezingen van 2014 is de stad uitgebreid tot een 'metropoolregio' met ruim 800.000 inwoners.

Trabzon là một thành phố tự trị (büyük şehir) đồng thời cũng là một tỉnh (il) của Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ. Các tỉnh và thành phố giáp ranh gồm: Giresun về phía tây, Gümüşhane về phía tây nam, Bayburt về phía đông nam và Rize về phía đông. Đây là nơi sinh sống của nhiều cộng đồng Hồi giáo nhỏ nói tiếng Pontic .
