Kottayam (Malayalam: കോട്ടയം; IPA: [ko:ʈ:ayam]) is a municipality in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. It is the district headquarters of the district and is located about 129 km (80.2 mi) north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. As per the 2011 Indian census, Kottayam has a population of 489,615 people, and a population density of 4,533/km2 (11,740/sq mi). The total Kottayam Metropolitan area (the combined area of Kottayam municipality and its adjacent suburbs) has a population of 802,419 people, and a population density of 3,647/km2 (9,450/sq mi).

മധ്യ കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന നഗരമാണ്‌ കോട്ടയം. കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനമാണ് ഈ നഗരം. നഗരത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്ര ബിന്ദുവാണ് തിരുനക്കര . കോട്ടയത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തക പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണ മേഖലയിലുള്ള പാരമ്പര്യം കണക്കിലെടുത്ത് ഈ നഗരം “അക്ഷര നഗരി” എന്ന അപരനാമത്തിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിലാദ്യമായി സമ്പൂർണ്ണസാക്ഷരത കൈവരിച്ച നഗരമാണ് കോട്ടയം. കേരളത്തിലെയും, ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയിലെയും പ്രഥമ കലാലയമായ സി.എം.എസ്.കോളേജ് സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് കോട്ടയം നഗരത്തിലാണ്. മലയാളമനോരമ, ദീപിക, മംഗളം മുതലായ പ്രധാന പത്രങ്ങൾ ആരംഭിച്ചതും അവയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനവും കോട്ടയം നഗരത്തിലാണ്. പ്രമുഖ പുസ്തക പ്രസാധകരായ ഡി.സി ബുക്സിന്റെയും, നാഷണൽ ബൂക്സ്റ്റാൾ (NBS) മുതലായ മറ്റു പല പുസ്തക പ്രസാധക സംഘങ്ങളുടേയും ആസ്ഥാനവും കോട്ടയമാണ്. കോട്ടയം നഗരസഭ 1924-ൽസ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 1989 ൽ, ഭാരതത്തിൽ 100 % സാക്ഷരത നേടിയ ആദ്യ നഗരമായി കോട്ടയം മാറി. ഇപ്പോൾ കോട്ടയം ഒരു പുകയില വിമുക്ത നഗരം കൂടിയാണ്. കോട്ടയം റെയിൽ നിലയം, കെ.എസ്.ആർ.ടി.സി, സ്വകാര്യ ബസ്സ്റ്റാന്റുകൾ എന്നിവ നഗരത്തിനുള്ളിൽ തന്നെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. കോട്ടയം തുറമുഖം നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്നും 6 കി.മി ദൂരത്തിൽ നാട്ടകം എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. കോടിമതയിൽ നിന്ന് ബോട്ട് സർവീസ്സും ലഭ്യമാണ്. ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത വിമാനത്താവളം 80 കി.മി ദൂരത്തിൽ നെടുമ്പാശ്ശേരിയിലാണ് (കൊച്ചി). കോട്ടയം മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജ് നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്നും 10 കി.മി മാറി ഗാന്ധിനഗർ (ആർപ്പൂക്കര) യിൽ ആണു. മഹാത്മാഗാന്ധി സർവ്വകലാശാലാ (MG University) ആസ്ഥാനം നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് 12 കി.മി മാറി പ്രിയദർശിനി ഹിൽസിൽ (അതിരമ്പുഴ) സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു.ഒട്ടേറെ പ്രമുഖ വ്യക്തികൾ ജനിച്ച നാടാണ് കോട്ടയം. മുൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ രാഷ്ട്രപതി കെ. ആ ർ നാരായണൻ, മുൻ സുപ്രീം കോടതി ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് കെ ജി ബാലകൃഷ്ണൻ, മുൻ കേരള മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടി, സിനിമാ താരം മമ്മൂട്ടി, അരുന്ധതി റോയ്, മജീഷ്യൻ ജോവാൻമധുമല ,പനച്ചിക്കാട്എ സദാശിവൻ , ന്നിങ്ങനെ അനേകം വ്യക്തികൾ എടുത്തു പറയാവുന്നവരാണ്.
