The land of the Telugu people was referred to, during ancient times, as Āndhra dēśa (country of Andhra) and Trilingadēśa (country of Trilinga). The word Telugu is believed to have been derived from trilinga, as in Trilinga Desha, "the country of the three lingas". According to a Hindu chronicle, Shiva descended as linga on three mountains which marked the boundaries of the Telugu country, namely Kaleshwaram in Telangana, Srisailam in Rayalaseema and Bhimeswaram, also known as Draksharamam, in Coastal Andhra. It was also believed that the word Telangana derived from Telingana, Telinga, Trilinga.
తెలుగునాట సుప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన మూడు శైవక్షేత్రాలకు త్రిలింగాలని పేరు. ఈ మూడు శైవక్షేత్రాలూ నెలకొన్న ప్రాంతాలే త్రిలింగ ప్రాంతాలని, అందుకే ఈ భాషకు త్రిలింగ అనే పదం ఏర్పడిందని భావిస్తూంటారు. త్రిలింగ అన్న పదం నుంచే తెలుగు అన్న పదం వచ్చిందని ఒక కాలంలో కొందరు పండితుల భావన.
ऐसा माना जाता है कि 'तेलुगु' शब्द 'त्रिलिंग' शब्द से व्युत्पन्न हुआ है। 'त्रिलिंग देश' से अभिप्राय 'तीन लिंगों वाला देश'। हिन्दू इतिहास के अनुसार, शिव तीन पर्वतों पर लिंग के रूप में अवतरित हुए। ये तीन पर्वत हैं- कालेश्वरम (तेलंगाना में), श्रीशैलम (रायलसीमा में) तथा भीमेश्वरम (तटवर्ती आन्ध्र प्रदेश]] में)। ये तीनों लिंग तेलुगु क्षेत्र की सीमा पर हैं।
