La solfatara di Pozzuoli è uno dei quaranta vulcani che costituiscono i Campi Flegrei; è ubicata a circa tre chilometri dal centro della città di Pozzuoli. Si tratta di un antico cratere vulcanico ancora attivo ma in stato quiescente che da circa due millenni conserva un'attività di fumarole d'anidride solforosa, getti di fango bollente ed elevata temperatura del suolo: altre attività simili si riscontrano anche in altre parti del mondo e vengono indicate con il nome di solfatare proprio per la similitudine con quella puteolana.
Solfatara (Italian: Solfatara di Pozzuoli) is a shallow volcanic crater at Pozzuoli, near Naples, part of the Phlegraean Fields (Italian: Campi Flegrei) volcanic area. It is a volcano, which emits jets of steam with sulfurous fumes. The name comes from the Latin, Sulpha terra, "land of sulfur", or "sulfur earth". It was formed around 4000 years ago and last erupted in 1198 with what was probably a phreatic eruption – an explosive steam-driven eruption caused when groundwater interacts with magma. The crater floor was a popular tourist attraction until 2017, as it has many fumaroles and mud pools. The area is well known for its bradyseism. The vapours had been used for medical purposes since Roman times.
La Solfatare (Solfatara di Pozzuoli en italien) est un volcan situé à proximité de la ville de Pouzzoles, à l'ouest de Naples, la deuxième plus grande agglomération du pays avec quatre millions d'habitants, dans la région italienne de Campanie, au sud de la chaîne principale des Apennins.
De Solfatara is een vulkaan in Italië, gelegen in Pozzuoli bij Napels. De naam is afgeleid van solfa (zwavel) en terra (aarde). De vulkaan is onderdeel van de Campi Flegrei, de Brandende Velden, een caldera die verantwoordelijk is voor het ontstaan van de Golf van Napels.
Die Solfatara (italienisch Cratere Solfatara) ist ein holozänes Trockenmaar im Stadtgebiet von Pozzuoli. Das Maar liegt in Luftlinie etwa 9 km westlich des Stadtkerns der italienischen Großstadt Neapel und hat einen Durchmesser zwischen 610 und 710 m. Es bedeckt eine Fläche von etwa 35 Hektar und weist an drei Seiten steile bis zu 80 m hohe Wände auf. Im Süden öffnet sich die Umrandung in Richtung Stadt und auf den Golf von Neapel. Unter dem Maar liegt ein etwa 3 km tiefer Schlot. An der Solfatara liegt das etwas mehr als 4 ha große NATURA 2000 Naturschutzgebiet Stazioni di Cyanidium caldarium di Pozzuoli. Das einzige Schutzgebiet in Europa, in dem das thermophile Cyanidium caldarium vorkommt.
