The London Metal Exchange (LME) is a futures & forwards exchange with the world's largest market in standarised forward contracts, futures contracts and options on base metals. The exchange also offers contracts on ferrous metals and precious metals. As the LME offers contracts with daily expiry dates of up to three months from trade date, weekly contracts to six months, and monthly contracts up to 123 months, it also allows for cash trading. It offers hedging, worldwide reference pricing, and the option of physical delivery to settle contracts.

Während an ihrer großen Schwester, der Londoner Börser (englisch London Stock Exchange), überwiegend Aktien gehandelt werden, beinhaltet die Londoner Metallbörse (englisch London Metal Exchange, auch LME genannt), den Markt für Kassageschäfte und Termingeschäfte in unedlen und sonstigen Metallen. Damit gehört sie, neben den Metallbörsen in Singapur (SIMEX) und New York (COMEX an der New York Mercantile Exchange), zu den weltgrößten Metallhandelsplätzen. Die Börse ermittelt täglich weltweite Referenz- bzw. Kassakurse für Metalle, bietet Hedgegeschäfte an und ermöglicht auch die mit dem Handel verbundenen, physischen Lagerungen.
