Appenzell is a village, though considered as a town by the FSO, and the capital of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Switzerland. Appenzell has no municipal government of its own; rather, the different parts of Appenzell belong to and are governed by the districts Appenzell, Schwende and Rüte. Because of that, for firefighting, energy and water, the village Appenzell has a special-purpose municipality, the Feuerschaugemeinde.

Die Pfarrkirche St. Mauritius ist die römisch-katholische Pfarrkirche der Ortschaft Appenzell. Sie ist dem heiligen Mauritius geweiht, dem Landespatron des Kantons Appenzell Innerrhoden. Das erste Bauwerk an diesem Standort entstand um 1068/1069. Im Lauf ihrer Geschichte wurde die Kirche mehrmals erweitert oder neu erbaut. Ihr heutiges äusseres Erscheinungsbild erhielt sie mit dem Neubau des klassizistischen Kirchenschiffes zwischen 1824 und 1825; dabei blieben der Chor und der Turm der spätgotischen Kirche unversehrt. Im Inneren blieb auch nach der Renovierung von 2018–2019 die zwischen 1890 und 1892 durchgeführte Umgestaltung im Stil des Neorokoko weitgehend erhalten. Der Hochaltar stammt aus dem Jahr 1622, die übrige Kircheneinrichtung grösstenteils aus Mitte bis Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts.
