Due to the mild climate and terrain there, it has enjoyed a high level of agricultural civilization since ancient times, and is named after this, for the first character of its name (常) means "always, often", while the second (熟) means "ripe". The name of the adjacent county-level city of Taicang means "great granary".

In 1997, Humble Administrator's Garden was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a component of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou.

The Gate to the East, also known as the Gate of the Orient, (simplified Chinese: 东方之门; traditional Chinese: 東方之門; pinyin: dōng fāng zhī mén) is the second tallest building in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China behind Suzhou IFS. It is intended to be a symbol of a gateway to the city which emphasizes the city's continuing significance in modern China. With a height of 301.8 metres (990 ft), the building is located in the heart of Suzhou's China–Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) district. Construction began in 2004 and was completed in 2016 at a cost of $700 million USD. Its location precisely indicates the intersection of the historical east-west-axis of Suzhou Old Town with the west bank of Jinji Lake.

The Suzhou Silk Museum is a museum in Suzhou, China. Established in 1991, it documents the history of silk production and Suzhou embroidery from around 2000 BC. Exhibits include old looms with demonstrations, samples of ancient silk patterns, and an explanation of sericulture. Of major note was a room full of live silk worms, eating mulberry leaves and spinning cocoons. By December, 2009, the live silkworms had been replaced with models.
The Confucian Temple of Suzhou (Chinese: 苏州文庙) and also known as the Suzhou Stone Inscription Museum and Suzhou Prefecture School (Chinese: 苏州府学; a state-run school), is a Confucian temple located in the ancient city of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, on the south bank of the Yangtze River. It was built by Fan Zhongyan, a famous state officer of the Song dynasty. It was the first temple school in China and is notable for containing the four greatest steles of the Song dynasty, of on which is the Map of Pingjiang. In 1961, the stone inscriptions in Suzhou Confucian Temple were listed among the first batch of National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units by The State Council of the People's Republic of China. In 2001, together with the Confucian Temple, it was called Suzhou Confucian Temple and Stone inscription. Presently, it is known as new name as Suzhou Stone Inscription Museum.

Dushu Lake (Chinese: 独墅湖) is a freshwater lake in the southern part of Suzhou Industrial Park. It is located in the junction of four towns: Guoxiang (郭巷), Chefang (车坊), Xietang (斜塘) and Loufeng (娄葑). The area of Dushu Lake is 9.19 square kilometers with an average depth of 6.5 meters. The lake connects the Jinji Lake (金鸡湖) at its north end, the Fengmen Pond (葑门塘) at its west, and is fed by the Wusong River (吴淞江) from the south-east. The earliest proof of possible human activity around Dushu Lake can be traced back 5500 years, according to an archaeology report conducted in 2001. The findings were significant in analyzing Suzhou's climate, geography, and environment in ancient times. Suzhou Dushu Lake Higher Education Town is located by the east bank of the lake, and two tunnels run through the lake, connecting the east and west bank.
Lake Shi (Chinese: 石湖; pinyin: Shí Hú) or Shi Hu, literally Stone Lake, is a fresh water lake located in the southeast of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. It is closed to Shangfang Mountain, which is a national forest park of China. The most famous spot of it is "Lake Shi String of Moons" (石湖串月) on August 17 of the Chinese calendar, when nine reflections of the moon appear in a line. Lake Shi was a bay of the Lake Tai in ancient times.

Mudu (simplified Chinese: 木渎; traditional Chinese: 木瀆; pinyin: Mùdú; Suzhounese: ⁸moq-doq₈, Wu Chinese pronunciation: [moʔ˧ doʔ˦]) is a town in Wuzhong District, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive from the downtown in Suzhou to Mudu. Mudu is a small town which is famous for its history. During the Qing dynasty, the Qianlong Emperor visited Mudu six times when he traveled around the country. Nowadays, many teleplay groups also come to Mudu frequently to film television series. Due to this, many outlanders came to Mudu to make their business by renting out costumes and taking photos for visitors. There is a famous street in Suzhou named Shantang Street, Mudu also has one. It is shorter than the one in Suzhou downtown, but if you go straight along the street, one can approach to the Linyan Mountain. Many visitors will first visit this mountain when they visit Mudu.
Qiandeng (simplified Chinese: 千灯; traditional Chinese: 千燈; pinyin: Qiāndēng; lit. 'one thousand lamps') is a town in Kunshan, Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. As of 2018, it has 12 residential communities and 16 villages under its administration. It is located 15 kilometers south of Kunshan city and borders Qingpu District, Shanghai on its east side. Qiandeng has an area of 84 km2 and a population of about 130,000.

The Suzhou Museum of Opera and Theatre or China Kunqu Museum is a theatre museum in Suzhou, China. The museum was established in 1986. It is located in a Ming dynasty theatre of latticed wood and has display halls with old musical instruments, hand-copied books, lyrics and scores, masks and costumes. It also has other paraphernalia including a life size orchestra and photographs of performers. The museum also covers kunqu's 500-year-old history. The museum is often used for performances today and the teahouse stages daily shows.

Five Peaks Garden (Chinese: 五峰园) or Wufeng Garden is a classical Chinese garden located in Suzhou, China. The original garden dates to the Ming dynasty and was the site of painter Wen Boren's home. In 1979 authorities began restoration of the gardens. Since 2002, the Garden has become a protected area which is maintained by the Suzhou gardens administration. The garden takes its name from five rock peaks which are found on the grounds.
