Flying Fish Cove (Chinese: 飞鱼湾, Malay: Pantai Ikan Terbang) is the capital city and main settlement of Christmas Island. Although it was originally named after the British survey-ship Flying Fish, many maps simply label it "The Settlement". It was the first British settlement on the island, established in 1888.

The population is made up of a mixture of various ethnicities such as Chinese, European, and Malay. The village was founded in the 1970s, and the houses were built to withstand the tropical cyclones.

Christmas Island District High School (CIDHS) is a public co-educational early learning, primary, and high day school located in Christmas Island, a territory of Australia. As of 2025 the school served approximately 70 students from Kindergarten through to Year 12. The school is operated by the Western Australian Department of Education.
The Christmas Island Resort, often called the Christmas Island Casino, was a holiday resort on Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the north-eastern Indian Ocean about 380 kilometres (240 mi) south of Java and 1,600 kilometres (990 mi) north-west of the Australian mainland. The resort, including an integrated casino, opened in late 1993. The casino was generally profitable, with gross profits from casino operations peaking at $153.7 million in 1994–95. Overall, however, the casino and resort struggled financially and, after being badly affected by the 1997 Asian financial crisis, it was closed on 23 April 1998.
Poon Saan is the second largest village on Christmas Island, an external territory of Australia. Ethnic Chinese make up the majority of inhabitants. In Cantonese, Poon Saan (半山, Jyutping: bun3 saan1) means "halfway up the hill". The architecture of Poon Saan reflects the Chinese heritage of the majority of residents in being Singapore style units, rather than the Western style common in Flying Fish Cove.
Drumsite is a village in Christmas Island. The village's population consists mostly of Chinese and European workers. A project that built townhouses in the village was built in 2013 amid concerns about asylum seekers going to Christmas Island.
