Curacao

The Leeward Antilles (Dutch: Benedenwindse Eilanden; Spanish: islas de Sotavento) are a chain of islands in the Caribbean, specifically part of the southerly islands of the Lesser Antilles (and, in turn, the Antilles and the West Indies) along the southeastern fringe of the Caribbean Sea, just north of the Venezuelan coast of the South American mainland. The Leeward Antilles, while among the Lesser Antilles, are not to be confused with the Leeward Islands (also of the Lesser Antilles) to the northeast.

The Hato Formation is a geologic formation dating to the Late Pleistocene in Curaçao. It preserves fossils.

The North-east Curaçao parks and coast Important Bird Area is a 13,554 ha tract of land in Curaçao, a constituent island nation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Dutch Caribbean. It encompasses much of the north-western end of the island, including the Christoffel and Shete Boka National Parks, as well as a strip of coast from there half-way down the northern side of the island. It has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports populations of bare-eyed pigeons and Caribbean elaenias, as well as a major breeding colony of least terns.

Bandabou (also: Band'abou) is a district of the island of Curaçao. It is one of the three districts, and encompasses the north-western part of the island. The district stretches from Grote Berg to Sabana Westpunt. Bandabou is written in Papiamentu and translates to "lower side".

Plantage San Juan is een voormalige plantage in het dorp Pannekoek in het westelijke deel van Curaçao en één van de oudste op het eiland. Het was een provisieplantage die meerdere gewassen teelde.

The Cliff Villa Peninsula (Klif Villa Schiereiland) is a promontory where two currents meet on the north-westerly point of the island of Curaçao (a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean).

Sabana Westpunt is a Curaçaoan town within the district of Bandabou. It is located in the northwest of the country, 37km northwest of Willemstad. It’s known for it’s stunning beaches, such as Playa Piskado. The town is Curaçao’s 5th most populous urban area, with a population of 783 in the census of 2011.

Curaçao Centre for Correction and Detention (Papiamento: Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Kòrsou, SDKK; Dutch: Centrum voor Detentie en Correctie Curaçao) is the only prison on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. Since the construction of the prison in 1960 the prison has also been known as the Koraal Specht-prison, after the name of the neighbourhood it is located in. After renovations around the year 2001 the prison changed its name to Bon Futuro prison, meaning good future. At the Dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on 10 October 2010 the prison changed its name once more and became the Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Kòrsou. During its existence the prison has been noted for ill treatment of prisoners and poor conditions. International, Dutch, Antillean and Curaçaoan investigations have found problems frequently. As of December 2014 the facility holds around 400 prisoners.

The Ceru Mainsjie Formation is a geologic formation in Curaçao. It preserves fossils dating back to the Bartonian period.

Seaquarium Beach (also called Sea Aquarium Beach) is a beach on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, located to the south of Willemstad. The beach is named after Curaçao Sea Aquarium, located nearby. The beach is open to the public, but an access fee must be paid. There are several bars, clubs and restaurants.

The Ceru di Cueba Formation is a geologic formation in Curaçao. It preserves fossils dating back to the Bartonian period.

Jan Thiel Lagoon is an 80 ha area of hypersaline lagoons, surrounded by woodland, on the southern coast of Curaçao, a constituent island nation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Dutch Caribbean. It is adjacent to the capital, Willemstad. The site, comprising the lagoons, woodland and adjacent coastal waters, has been identified as a 432 ha Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. Birds for which the site was designated include breeding colonies of least and common terns. It is also an important foraging area for American flamingos.

Bandariba (also: Banda'riba) is a district of the island of Curaçao. It is one of the three districts and encompasses the south-eastern part of the island. The name is Papiamentu and translates to "upside". The district contains the towns and villages of Santa Rosa, Spaanse Water,^: 6 Montaña, Seru Grandi, and Oostpunt.

The Aruba-Curaçao-Bonaire cactus scrub ecoregion (WWF ID: NT1302) covers the dry land on the semi-arid islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire in the southern Caribbean Sea, about 80 km from the mainland of Venezuela. In low-lying coastal areas the islands also support mangrove wetlands. The landscape features a range of cactus species and acacia trees.

The Stadion Rignaal 'Jean' Francisca is an association football stadium in Willemstad, Curaçao.

Landhuis Brievengat, ook wel Plantage "Hoop", is een voormalig 18e-eeuws plantagehuis op Curaçao in de wijk Brievengat.

Den Paradera is een kruidentuin aan de oostzijde van Curaçao. Er staan honderden lokale bomen, struiken en kruiden, veelal met medicinale werking.

Sint Jorisbaai är en vik i Curaçao. Den ligger i den östra delen av landet, 15 km öster om huvudstaden Willemstad.

The Blue Bay Sculpture Garden is a sculpture park situated at the Blue Bay Golf & Beach Resort in Boca Samí, Curaçao, on an area of approximately 2000 square metres in front of and next to Landhuis Blauw.

Plaza Hotel Curaçao is a former hotel in Willemstad, Curaçao. It was constructed in the Waterfort, and opened on 12 October 1957 as Hotel Curaçao Intercontinental. It is the tallest building on the island. The hotel has changed ownership many times. In 2017, Plaza Hotel Management was declared bankrupt. The hotel is in a dilapidated state, and pieces have fallen off. Viva Construction had been hired to assess the building prior to the 2020 auction, and reported that demolition was the best option. At the auction, it was sold to Algemeen Pensionfonds Curaçao, a pension fund which planned to redevelop the site.

Muizenberg comprises a 150 ha wetland area, including an intermittent shallow lake (Muizenberg) and a smaller pond (Kaya Fortuna). The site lies within the northern suburbs of Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, a constituent island nation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Dutch Caribbean. In 1915, Shell Curaçao built the Muizenberg dam to collect water for cooling. The artificial lake which was created started to attract a large population of birds.

Malpais-Sint Michiel is a 1,100 ha tract of land, a former plantation just north of Sint Michiels Bay, on the southern coast of Curaçao, a constituent island nation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Dutch Caribbean. It has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports populations of bare-eyed pigeons, American coots, common terns and Caribbean elaenias, as well as a large brown-throated parakeet roost. It comprises two wetlands – a freshwater dam and a saline lagoon – with their surrounding thorn scrub vegetation. The waterbodies are used by a variety of waterbirds, including American flamingos, and the vegetation is used by resident and migratory passerines as well as by wintering raptors. The area has also been recognised as a Ramsar site as a wetland of international importance.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Willemstad (Latin: Dioecesis Gulielmopolitana; Dutch: Bisdom Willemstad; Papiamento: Diosesano (di Obispado) di Willemstad) is a diocese of the Latin Church of the Roman Catholic Church in the Caribbean. The diocese encompasses the territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean: the countries (Dutch: landen) Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten (the southern half of St. Martin) and the islands Bonaire, St. Eustatius, Saba (which are part of the Netherlands). The cathedra is in the city of Curaçao. The diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain, and a member of the Antilles Episcopal Conference.

Boca Sint Michiel, ook bekend onder de lokaal gebruikelijkere naam Boca Samí, is een dorp op Curaçao. Het ligt vijf kilometer ten westen van Willemstad.

Caribbean Medical University (CMU) is an independent, for-profit, U.S. curriculum-based medical school. It is located on the island of Curaçao in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan coast. The main campus is located in the Piscadera Bay area of Willemstad. After a total of four years of training, students are awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.).

St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine (SMUFOM) is a private medical school located in Willemstad, Curaçao, which started operating in 2000.

Avalon University School of Medicine (AUSOM) (previously Xavier University School of Medicine in Bonaire) is a private medical school located in Willemstad, Curaçao, in the Caribbean. AUSOM confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Administrative offices for the university are located in Youngstown, Ohio.

Campo Alegre, also known as Le Mirage, was a large open-air brothel in Curaçao. It has been operated since the 1940s. Originally an army encampment, it is located off Seru Fortunaweg near Curaçao International Airport. It was the largest legal brothel in the Caribbean. Curaçao, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, permits the business of prostitution within its territory within strict regulation. In June 2020, Campo Alegre closed. The facilities are auctioned in June 2022. Within stricter legal rules, prostitution can be resumed.

An invasion of Curaçao was launched by French forces against the Dutch colony in 1800 during the War of the Second Coalition. French forces landed on the island on 22 July, and on 5 September attacked and captured a fort protecting the town of Willemstad. The American consul there sent for help, and on 10 September the Dutch governor of the island surrendered to the British frigate HMS Nereide under the command of Frederick Watkins. On 22 September the American sloops USS Patapsco and USS Merrimack arrived, and on 23 September the Patapsco sailed into the harbor and landed troops to reinforce the garrison protecting the town.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Curaçao was a part of the ongoing global viral pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which was documented for the first time in Curaçao on 13 March 2020. The case was a 68-year-old man who was on vacation from the Netherlands. By 9 July 2020, all cases resolved. On 15 July, a new case was discovered, and on 6 August all cases resolved again briefly until 10 August.

Stadion dr. Antoine Maduro is a multi-use stadium in Willemstad, Curaçao. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of S.V. SUBT. It has a capacity of 7,000 spectators. It is located on Vesuviusstraat, a road off Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard, to the south of the main harbor in Willemstad.

Suffisant Naval Barracks (Dutch:Marinekazerne Suffisant) is a Dutch armed forces base located on Curaçao. Until 2009, it was used by the infantry company 31 INFCIE of the Netherlands Marine Corps. Currently the base is used for the conscription of Curaçaoan youths. However, rather than being purely military in nature, the conscription also serves a social purpose: conscripts can get an education and receive diplomas on the base. During the first six months the conscripts receive military training and in the remaining six months they study to obtain a diploma. The conscripts are called miliciens. Currently the Royal Marechaussee has a brigade stationed on the base as well.

The Basilica of St. Anne (Papiamento: Basilika Santa Ana; Dutch: Basiliek Santa Ana) It is a religious building that functions as Catholic Minor Basilica and at the same time as co-cathedral of the Diocese of Willemstad (Latin: Dioecesis Gulielmopolitana) on the island of Curaçao in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela. The other being the main cathedral dedicated to Our Lady the Queen of the Holy Rosary of the same city.

Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity Foundation (previously The Caribbean Marine Biological Institute; commonly referred to as CARMABI Foundation or just CARMABI) is a research organization in Curaçao, former Netherlands Antilles. It is situated in Piscadera Bay, 25 metres (82 ft) from the Caribbean Sea. Its education and research programs include the ecological aspects of fisheries and coral reef sciences.

Piscadera Bay (Dutch: Piscaderabaai) is a waterway and a neighbourhood in the Netherlands Antilles. It is situated at the western side of Otrobanda, in the southern part of Willemstad, the capital of the southern Caribbean island of Curaçao. It contains a fort of the same name, the Caribbean Marine Biological Institute, and several hotels. It has a small beach, as well as a vacation village and holiday resort, with tennis courts and casinos. Sint Anna Bay is nearby. In the 17th century, maps of Piscadera Bay showed it to be a popular locale for fishing, with over 400 different species noted.

Sint-Elisabeth Hospital was the main hospital on Curaçao, located in the Otrobanda district of Willemstad. It closed in November 2019, and was replaced by the Curaçao Medical Center. Part of the hospital will be demolished.

The Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles (Dutch: Staten van de Nederlandse Antillen; Papiamento: Parlamento di Antias Hulandes), also translated as the Estates of the Netherlands Antilles, was the parliament of the Netherlands Antilles. It comprised 22 members, elected for a four-year term in three multi-seat constituencies and two single-seat constituencies. On 10 October 2010, the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved, and so was the parliament.

The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS; Papiamento: Banko Sentral di Kòrsou i Sint Maarten, Dutch: Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten; previously the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles) is the central bank for the Netherlands Antillean guilder and administers the monetary policy of Curaçao and Sint Maarten. The bank dates to 1828 making it the oldest surviving central bank in the Americas.

Isla is een raffinaderij op het schiereiland Isla op Curaçao. Het heeft een capaciteit van 335.000 vaten nominaal per dag. De raffinaderij werd in 1918 geopend door de Koninklijke Nederlandse Petroleum Maatschappij (later Shell).

Muizenberg is de naam van een wijk in Willemstad (Curaçao). Het bevat de buurten Muizenberg Nobo en St. Jacob. Het natuurgebied Muizenberg bevindt zich in de wijk.

Het Monument voor de gevallenen in Willemstad is een monument ter nagedachtenis aan slachtoffers uit de Nederlandse Antillen die in de periode 1939-1945 door oorlogshandelingen zijn omgekomen. Het monument wordt wel Vrijheid van de zee genoemd.

Tempel Emanu-el (ook gespeld als Emanu-él; Hebreeuws voor "God met ons") of De Tempel, is een voormalige synagoge aan het Hendrikplein in de oude wijk Punda van Willemstad op Curaçao. Het gebouw wordt sinds 1999 gebruikt door het openbaar ministerie.

Fort Waakzaamheid is een van de acht forten op het eiland Curaçao. Het staat op een heuvel, Seru Domi, ten zuiden van de westelijke oprit van de Koningin Julianabrug. Fort Waakzaamheid was een klein fort, dat slechts bestond uit een bastion met uitzicht over Otrobanda, het aangrenzende zeegebied en de Zwarte berg (Papiaments: Seru Pretu). Het fort werd in 1803 als bescherming tegen de Fransen gebouwd.

Fort Sint Michiel is een van de acht forten op het eiland Curaçao en staat in het gelijknamige dorp Sint Michiel (ook bekend als Boca Samí). Daarmee is het het enige fort dat niet in Willemstad staat. Het ligt nabij de ingang van de Sint Michielsbaai op de zuidoever en is waarschijnlijk in 1701 gebouwd. Samen met eenzelfde geschutsbatterij aan de noordkant beschermde het de toegang tot de baai.

Fort Piscadera is een van de acht forten op het eiland Curaçao en staat ten westen van de ingang van de Piscaderabaai.

El SV Vesta Stadion es un estadio de fútbol ubicado en el municipio de Santa Maria, Willemstad, Curazao. También se conoce como "Stadion di Santa Maria" y su equipo local es el S.V. V.E.S.T.A.. El complejo deportivo cuenta con una capacidad de 2.000 espectadores.

Het Waaigat is een baai en natuurlijke haven op het eiland Curaçao, ten oosten van de Sint Annabaai waarmee het wordt verbonden met de Caraïbische Zee. De binnenwateren Waaigat, de Sint Annabaai en het Schottegat bestrijken samen een oppervlakte van ongeveer 10 km².

Le Musée Octogone est un musée situé à Willemstad sur l'île de Curaçao.

Le Musée national d'anthropologie archéologique est un musée ouvert en 1998 situé à Willemstad sur l'île de Curaçao.

Isla (Spaans: eiland) is een schiereiland in de Baai van Asiento, dat deel uitmaakte van de grote, praktisch aan alle zijden door land omgeven binnenbaai Schottegat op Curaçao.
