West Hawai'i Explorations Academy (WHEA), officially West Hawaii Explorations Academy Public Charter School, is a public charter school located in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, United States, founded on May 4, 2000. It includes a middle school (grades 6–8) and a high school (9-12), with a total student body of about 280. The school has a project based curriculum with emphasis placed on individual time management, technical writing, and experiential research. Most WHEA projects can be classified as either marine, Malama ʻaina (taking care of the land), or energy related. The school motto is "No Child Left Indoors" which reflects the school's focus on getting students outdoors and into the community to participate in meaningful hands-on education. The program was originally created as a school-within-a-school of Konawaena High School where students with at least a 3.6 GPA could attend for a semester. Currently, the school does not screen students on the basis of academic merit, although it does tend to attract self-motivated students interested in science. In 2005, WHEA was honored by the Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School Awards, and Intel and Scholastic Schools of Distinction. The school is located on the site of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority on Keahole Point, on the Island of Hawaiʻi, within walking distance of tide pools where organisms are sometimes collected for study and research.

Kohanaiki Beach Park is a relatively new park, established in 2013, located in Kailua, Hawaii County, Hawaii. Called "Pinetree" by the local people, it is a quiet park visited by the local people mainly, its entrance on Hawaii State Highway 19 being shown only as "Shoreline".

Hōlualoa Bay is a historic area between Kailua-Kona and Keauhou Bay in the Kona District of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. The community now called Hōlualoa is uphill (mauka in the Hawaiian Language) from this bay. The name means "long slide" in the Hawaiian Language, from the long trail that went from a forest on the slopes of Hualālai (where the village is now), to a site where the logs were made into canoes (on the grounds of Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens) into this bay where a large royal building complex was built over several centuries.

The Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour Champions in Hawaii, on the Big Island. It is played annually in January at the Hualalai Resort Golf Club in Kaʻūpūlehu in the Kona district, and Mitsubishi Electric is the main sponsor. The field consists of the senior major champions of the last five years and other tournament winners of the last two years, plus a few sponsor invitees.

Kaʻūpūlehu is the site of a historic settlement on the west coast of Hawaiʻi island, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Devastated by a lava flow, the area is now the home of luxury hotels such as the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.

The 2006 Kīholo Bay earthquake occurred on October 15 at 07:07:49 local time with a magnitude of 6.7 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). The shock was centered 21 kilometers (13 mi) southwest of Puakō and 21 km (13 mi) north of Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi, just offshore of the Kona Airport, at a depth of 38.2 km (23.7 mi). It produced several aftershocks, including one that measured a magnitude of 6.1 seven minutes after the main shock. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center measured a nondestructive tsunami of 4 in (100 mm) on the coast of the Big Island.

Pālamanui Community Forest is a forest preserve located in Kailua-Kona on the island of Hawaii. It is collaboratively managed by two state government entities: the University of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife. The government's goal is preserving Hawaii's lowland tropical dry forest, protecting plant species that are endemic to the islands of Hawaii, and reducing invasive flora species.

Green Lake (Hawaiian: Ka Wai o Pele) was a freshwater crater lake in Puʻu Kapoho crater on the island of Hawaiʻi. With a surface area of 0.8 hectares (2.0 acres) and a maximum depth of 61 metres (200 ft), it was the largest natural freshwater lake in the Hawaiian Islands, and, along with Lake Waiau, was one of two freshwater lakes on Hawaiʻi Island.

The First day of classes was September 12, 2001; the original school day was scheduled for September Eleventh but was cancelled due to the September 11 attacks.

The Star of the Sea Painted Church in Kalapana, Hawai'i was built in 1927-1928 under the direction of the Belgian Catholic missionary priest Father Evarist Gielen, who painted the upper section of the church interior.

Lava Tree State Monument is a public park located 2.7 miles (4.3 km) southeast of Pāhoa in the Puna District on the island of Hawaii. It preserves lava molds of the tree trunks that were formed when a lava flow swept through a forested area in 1790.

Puʻu ʻŌʻō (also spelled Pu‘u‘ō‘ō, and often written Puu Oo, pronounced [ˈpuʔu ˈʔoːʔoː], poo-oo-OH-oh) is a volcanic cone on the eastern rift zone of Kīlauea volcano in the Hawaiian Islands. The eruption that created Puʻu ʻŌʻō began on January 3, 1983, and continued nearly continuously until April 30, 2018, making it the longest-lived rift-zone eruption of the last two centuries.

Kazumura Cave is a lava tube and has been surveyed at 40.7 miles (65.5 km) long and 3,614 feet (1,102 m) deep making it the longest and deepest lava tube in the world. The cave is located on the island of Hawaiʻi on the eastern slope of Kīlauea. Kīlauea is the most recently active volcano on the Big Island. The ʻAilāʻau lava flow that contains Kazumura Cave originated from the Kīlauea Iki Crater about 500 years ago.

On May 4, 2018, an earthquake with a magnitude of M_w 6.9 struck Hawaii island in the Hawaii archipelago at around 12:33 p.m. local time. The earthquake's epicenter was near the south flank of Kīlauea, which has been the site of seismic and volcanic activity since late April of that year. According to the United States Geological Survey the quake was related to the new lava outbreaks at the volcano, and it resulted in the Hilina Slump moving about two feet. It was the largest earthquake to affect Hawaii since the 1975 earthquake, which affected the same region, killing two people and injuring another 28.

Wao Kele O Puna (Wao Kele) is Hawaiʻi's largest remaining lowland wet forest, about 15 mi (24 km) south of the city of Hilo, along the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano on the Island of Hawaiʻi. The name means the upland rainforest of Puna. Puna is one of 9 districts on the island. Lava from Kīlauea continues to flow onto forest land.

KQHW-LD was a low power digital television station serving the District of Puna, south of Hilo, Hawai`i.

Kamoamoa is a set of volcanic fissures born on March 5, 2011, on the flanks of Kīlauea, Hawaii, US. Their opening between Puʻu ʻŌʻō to the east and Nāpau to the west follows a sudden drop in the level of lava lakes in the Puʻu ʻŌʻō and Halemaʻumaʻu craters, as well as an increase in nearby seismic activity, particularly tremors. Lava erupted for five days, forming a flow that advanced by around two kilometers. Following the eruption, a fire broke out in the forest.

Halemaʻumaʻu (six syllables: HAH-lay-MAH-oo-MAH-oo) is a pit crater within the much larger Kīlauea Caldera at the summit of Kīlauea volcano on island of Hawaiʻi. The roughly circular crater was 770 meters (2,530 ft) x 900 m (2,950 ft) before collapses that roughly doubled the size of the crater after May 3, 2018. Following the collapses of 2018, the bottom of Halemaʻumaʻu was roughly 600 m (2,000 ft) below the caldera floor. Halemaʻumaʻu is home to Pele, goddess of fire and volcanoes, according to the traditions of Hawaiian religion. Halemaʻumaʻu means "house of the ʻāmaʻu fern".

The Kaʻū Desert is a leeward desert in the district of Kaʻū, the southernmost district on the Big Island of Hawaii, and is made up mostly of dried lava remnants, volcanic ash, sand and gravel. The desert covers an area of the Kīlauea Volcano along the Southwest rift zone. The area lacks any vegetation, mainly due to acid rainfall.

Kīlauea Military Camp (KMC) is operated as a Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facility on Hawai‘i Island, also known as the Big Island, in Hawaiʻi. It is located inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. This United States Department of Defense (DoD) facility is at an elevation of 4,000 feet, within walking distance from Kilauea Volcano, the world's most active volcano.

Pauahi Crater is a volcanic crater measuring 2,000 ft (610 m) long, up to some 1,300 ft (400 m) across, and 300 ft (91 m) deep in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at 19°22′6″N 155°13′21″W. It is about 3 mi (4.8 km) from the top of the Big Island of Hawaii's Chain of Craters Road, which follows a "chain" that also includes the Hiʻiaka, Puʻu Huluhulu, Kānenuiohamo, Makaopuhi and Nāpau craters.

The Keanakakoi eruption was a VEI-4 eruption that occurred from the summit caldera of Kīlauea volcano in or around November 1790. It has been described as the deadliest volcanic eruption in what is now the United States, with more than 400 people having been killed in the event. The eruption deposited the Keanakakoi Ash which surrounds the Kīlauea Caldera.

The 2018 lower Puna eruption was a volcanic event on the island of Hawaiʻi, on Kīlauea volcano's East Rift Zone that began on May 3, 2018. It is related to the larger eruption of Kīlauea that began on January 3, 1983, though some volcanologists and USGS scientists have discussed whether to classify it as a new eruption. Outbreaks of lava fountains up to 300 feet (90 m) high, lava flows, and volcanic gas in the Leilani Estates subdivision were preceded by earthquakes and ground deformation that created cracks in the roads.

The Kīlauea Caldera (Hawaiian: Kaluapele), officially gazetted as Kīlauea Crater, is a caldera located at the summit of Kīlauea, an active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands. It has an extreme length of 2.93 mi (4.72 km), an extreme width of 1.95 mi (3.14 km), a circumference of 7.85 mi (12.63 km) and an area of 4.14 sq mi (10.7 km²). It contains Halemaʻumaʻu, an active pit crater near the caldera's southwestern edge.

It is directly north of Kilauea on the island of Hawaii and is bordered to the north and east by the community of Volcano and to the south by Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The High Altitude Observatory (HAO) is a laboratory of the US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). HAO operates the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory on Hawaii and a research institute in Boulder, Colorado.

The 1984 eruption of Mauna Loa was a Hawaiian eruption in the U.S. state of Hawaii that lasted from March 25 to April 15, 1984. It ended a 9-year period of quiescence at the volcano and continued for 22 days, during which time lava flows and lava fountains issued from the summit caldera and fissures along the northeast and southwest rift zones. Although the lava threatened Hilo, the flow stopped before reaching the outskirts of town.

The 2022 eruption of Mauna Loa was an episode of eruptive volcanic activity at Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, located on Hawaiʻi island, Hawaiʻi. Mauna Loa began to erupt shortly before midnight HST on November 27, 2022, when lava flows emerged from fissure vents in Moku‘āweoweo (Mauna Loa's summit caldera). It marked the first eruption at the volcano in 38 years. The eruption ended on December 13, 2022, after more than two weeks.

The 1975 eruption of Mauna Loa was a short-lived Hawaiian eruption that followed 25 years of quiescence at the Hawaiian volcano Mauna Loa. The eruption began just before midnight on July 5 and involved fissures extending across the length of Moku‘āweoweo, Mauna Loa's summit caldera, and into the upper ends of the volcano's northeast and southwest rift zones. After only 6 hours, activity in Moku‘āweoweo and on the southwest rift zone ended, but lava fountaining continued along the northeast rift zone until 7:30 p.m. on July 6, when all activity ceased.

The Amy B. H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden is a Hawaiian botanical garden near Captain Cook, Hawaii in the Kona District on the Big Island of Hawaii. Undergoing a change in management, the gardens were closed to the public from 2016–2019. It is now operated by Friends of the Garden and is open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm, with free admission (accepting donations).

The Greenwell Store is a historic building now run as a museum by the Kona Historical Society.

KKON (790 AM) was a radio station licensed to serve Kealakekua, Hawaii. The station was last owned by First Assembly King's Cathedral and Chapels.

Hōlei Sea Arch is a 90-foot (27-meter)-high natural arch located in Hawaii, on the southern coast of the Big Island, south of Kīlauea. This rock formation was born from marine erosion, in which the waves of the Pacific Ocean create this natural bridge of lava cliffs. The arch is made of basalt. It takes its name from the Hōlei Pali, the escarpment located up on the slopes of the volcano.

The 1975 Hawaii earthquake occurred on November 29 with a moment magnitude of 7.7 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). The shock affected several of the Hawaiian Islands and resulted in the deaths of two people and up to 28 injured. Significant damage occurred in the southern part of the Big Island totalling $4–4.1 million, and it also triggered a small brief eruption of Kilauea volcano.

ʻĀpua was an ancient village in the Puna district on the southern coast of the Island of Hawaiʻi in the Hawaiian Islands. A small fishing village was located at about 19°15′41″N 155°11′46″W, an elevation about 59 feet (18 m) above sea level. The village was destroyed by a tsunami following the April 2, 1868 Hawaii earthquake and never resettled.

The Hilina Slump, on the south flank of the Kīlauea Volcano on the southeast coast of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, is the most notable of several landslides that ring each of the Hawaiian Islands. These landslides are the means by which material deposited at a volcano's vents are transferred downward and seaward, eventually spilling onto the seabed to broaden the island.

The Puna-Kāʻu Historic District is an archaeological district located on the Puna-Kāʻu coastline in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The district includes over 300 sites occupied by Polynesians from the 13th through 19th centuries. Eleven of the sites within the district are considered exceptionally significant to modern understanding of native Hawaiian culture and have been the focus of most archaeological research in the area. Five of these sites are villages, at Poupou-Kauka, Kailiili, Kamoamoa, Laeʻapuki, Keahou Landing; these village sites provide insight into the agricultural and social practices of the Polynesians. The Puna-Kāʻu coastal trail, another one of the significant sites, connected these villages and provided a link to communities in the mountains. The remaining sites include the Wahaulu Heiau temple, the Puuloa petroglyph site, a pulu factory, and two shelter sites used by fishermen and opihi pickers.

The 1790 Footprints refer to a set of footprints found near the Kīlauea volcano in present-day Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawaiʻi. Resulting from an unusually explosive eruption, they may be associated with a series of battles in the area in 1790.

The Shipman family leased 6,324 acres (2,559 ha) of land near the Kīlauea volcano in 1937 from the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate, which they called the Ainahou Ranch. The name ʻaina hou means "new land". An older ranch called Keauhou (not to be confused with the community of Keauhou, on the western side of the island) had been established here in 1921, so a primitive trail existed, and the Chain of Craters Road had recently been built within a few miles. Herbert C. Shipman built a house on the remote ranch in 1941 for the family as a refuge for the anticipated Japanese invasion of Hawaii. It was used as a working cattle ranch, raising beef for the military during World War II.

Wood Valley Temple is a Tibetan Buddhist temple located five minutes above Pahala on the Big Island of Hawaii. Its Tibetan name is Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling (Tibetan: གནས་ཆུང་རྡོ་རྗེ་བྲག་གཡང་གླིང, Wylie: gnas-chung rdo-rje brag-g.yang gling).

The Ninole Hills, also known as the Ninole Volcanic Series, are steep eroded hills of shield basalts on the south side of the Island of Hawaii. Recent data suggests that these hills are either the remnants of large escarpments that pre-date the Mauna Loa volcano (the largest active volcano in the world), or uplifted blocks from the oldest parts of the Mauna Loa fault system.

The 1868 Hawaiʻi earthquake was the largest recorded in the history of Hawaiʻi island, with an estimated magnitude of 7.9 M_fa and a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme). The earthquake occurred at 4 p.m. local time on April 2, 1868 and caused a landslide and tsunami that led to 77 deaths. The aftershock sequence for this event has continued up to the present day.

KAHU is a Hawaii Public Radio station on 91.3 MHz FM. It is licensed to Pahala, Hawaii, on the island of Hawaiʻi.

The Āhole Hōlua Complex is a hōlua slide located on Āhole Inlet on the southwest side of the island of Hawaii. The slide was used in the Native Hawaiian sport of hōlua, in which upper-class men raced toboggans down lava slides covered in slippery grasses. Stone platforms along the side of the slide allowed spectators to watch the races. The slide consists of a 60 metres (200 ft) slope and a 23 metres (75 ft) runway; the slope and length of the slide indicate that the Native Hawaiians had developed advanced engineering skills. The slide is among the best-preserved hōlua slides in Hawaii.

Honuapo or Honuʻapo is a ghost town on the island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It was a thriving port town from the 1870s to the 1930s. The port was used to transport Colocasia esculenta (taro), and sugarcane. Little of the town remains today other than the pier, which was destroyed in 1946 by a tsunami.

Morse Field is a former military airfield located approximately 12 miles (19 km) south-southwest of Naʻālehu, Hawaii. It was also known as South Cape Airport, South Point Air Force Station, or Ka Lae Military Reservation. It is now abandoned.

Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is a 175-mile (282 km) long trail located on the island of Hawaii. It is not yet a single continuous trail, but can be accessed at several broken segments along the coastline of the Big Island. The trail was established to access the traditional Ancient Hawaiian culture along with the natural geology of the island. The trail was established 14 November 2000 as a National Historic Trail which is managed under the National Park Service. The trail has received funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The station was owned by Matthew Clapp, Jr., through licensee Mahalo Multimedia, LLC. It was licensed to operate experimental synchronous operations at Kalaoa and Naalehu.

Waihilau Falls is a waterfall in the Waimanu Valley, in the U.S. state of Hawaii on the island of Hawaii, the state's biggest and youngest island. It is the third-tallest waterfall in Hawaii and the thirteenth-highest in the world at 2,600 feet (790 metres) in height. It consists of three slender threads of water falling down through lush greenery.

Pakaʻalana heiau was an ancient Hawaiian temple (heiau) complex, sanctuary and refuge (puʻuhonua) in Waipio Valley where the God Lono was worshipped, which became the religious center on the Island of Hawaii dating back before the time of Liloa or his sons Hakau and ʻUmi-a-Līloa. It was also the site of Hale o Liloa that held a statue of the god in a corner of the structure and bones of ancient Native Hawaiians who were revered as gods. The complex is said to have had a six-foot carved stone statue of Liloa. The temple is located in the old district of Hamakua Here, Kiha killed the leader of a bandit clan named Ika, along with his companions as a sacrifice.

The ʻAkoni Pule Highway, designated as Hawaiʻi Route 270, is a state highway in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States, that is the main road along the North Kohala Coast on the Island of Hawaiʻi from Kawaihae to ʻUpolu Point and then on to Pololū Valley Lookout. The entire route is 27.0 miles (43.5 km) long.

Kohala (Hawaiian pronunciation: [koˈhɐlə]) is the name of the northwest peninsula of the island of Hawaiʻi in the Hawaiian Archipelago. In ancient Hawaii it was often ruled by an independent High Chief called the Aliʻi Nui. In modern times it is divided into two districts of Hawaii County: North Kohala and South Kohala. Locals commonly use the name Kohala to refer to the census-designated places of Halaʻula, Hāwī, and Kapaʻau collectively. The dry western shore is commonly known as the Kohala Coast, which has golf courses and seaside resorts.

The A. Nanbu Hotel-Holy's Bakery building is a historic building complex located in Kapaau on the island of Hawaii. The A. Nanbu Hotel, the original section of the building, was constructed circa 1900 and features a simplified Italianate design. Japanese immigrant Ayataro Nanbu purchased the hotel in 1917 and renamed it after himself. In addition to housing out-of-town visitors, the hotel played an important social function for the residents of Kapaau, as it hosted community meetings and gatherings and housed a local restaurant, bar, bakery, and dry goods store. Holy's Bakery was added to the back of the hotel in 1932 by Yoshio Hori, Nanbu's nephew; its name came from an error made by its signmaker, who was supposed to name the bakery after Hori. The hotel closed in the 1960s after Nanbu's death, while the bakery remains in operation and is still popular on the island.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Hāwī, North Kohala, is a historic parish in the West Hawaii Vicariate of the Catholic Diocese of Honolulu. The parish campus includes an architecturally remarkable historic church, a rectory, a church cemetery, and a parish hall.

ʻUpolu Point is the most northern point on the island of Hawaiʻi in the Hawaiian Islands. It is an extruding landform created by cooled lava from an old eruption from Kohala volcano. The main town on the extrusion is Hawi, Hawaii about 2 miles (3 km) inland. The main road is Akoni Pule Highway t(Hawaii state route 270) which starts at the Hawaii Belt Road in Kawaihae, along the west coast of the point, and then through the towns of Hawi and Kapaʻau, ending at Pololū Valley. Upolu Point also overlooks Mahukona Harbor.

The Kohala District Courthouse is a historic courthouse in Kapaau on the island of Hawaii. The courthouse was built in 1889 to serve as a district court for the Kingdom of Hawaii; it continued to serve as a courthouse through U.S. annexation and Hawaii's eventual statehood, only closing in 1975. It was designed in the style of a traditional Hawaiian plantation house, which is reflected in its wide lanai, single-walled exterior, and corrugated metal roof; the ornamentation on its lanai sets it apart from other local buildings. A statue of Kamehameha I, who was born in Kohala, stands in front of the building.

The Bond District is a collection of historic buildings located in the district of North Kohala on the island of Hawaii. The district has three sections: the homestead of missionaries Ellen and Reverend Elias Bond (1813–1896), Kalahikiola Church, and the Kohala Seminary.

Hāmākua is a district on the northeast coast of Hawaiʻi's Big Island, administered by the County of Hawaiʻi in the state of Hawaiʻi. It is also the name given for the coastline in the region, the "Hāmākua Coast".

Laupāhoehoe High and Elementary School was a public, co-educational high school, middle school and elementary school of the Hawaii State Department of Education. It serves grades kindergarten through twelve and was established in 1904. It was converted to a public charter school in 2012.

Kanu o ka ʻĀina New Century Public Charter School (KANU) is Hawaii's first native designed and controlled public charter school. It is in Kamuela, Hawaii. KANUʻs founder is Dr. Kū Kahakalau.

The O'ahu Cattlemen's Association Paniolo Hall of Fame, also known as the Hawai'i Paniolo Hall of Fame, is a cowboy hall of fame sponsored by the O'ahu Cattlemen's Association on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i. Established in 1999, the Paniolo Hall of Fame recognizes individuals "for their contribution to the paniolo heritage and for perpetuating the industry".

Route 200, known locally as Saddle Road, traverses the width of the Island of Hawaiʻi, from downtown Hilo to its junction with Hawaii Route 190 near Waimea. The road was once considered one of the most dangerous paved roads in the state, with many one-lane bridges and areas of marginally maintained pavement. Most of the road has now been repaved, and major parts have new re-alignments to modern standards. The highway is mostly one-lane in each direction, but there are two lanes on the uphill portions. The highway reaches a maximum elevation of 6,632 feet (2,021 m) and is subject to fog and low visibility. Many rental car companies used to prohibit use of their cars on Saddle Road, but now allow use of the road. The highway experiences heavy use as it provides the shortest driving route from Hilo to Kailua-Kona and access to the slopes of Mauna Loa and the Mauna Kea Observatories.

Parker Ranch is a working cattle ranch on the Island of Hawaii in the U.S. state of Hawaii, now run by a charitable trust.

Anna Ranch Heritage Center is a former cattle ranch in Waimea, Hawaii County, Hawaii named for Anna Leialoha Lindsey Perry-Fiske (1900–1995).

Pua Mau Place Arboretum and Botanical Garden (45 acres) is an early-stage, nonprofit arboretum and botanical garden located off Highway 270 at 10 Ala Kahua, Kawaihae, on the dry slopes of the Kohala Mountain Range on Hawaii (island), Hawaii. It is open daily with an admission fee.

Lalamilo Wells is a wind farm on the island of Hawaii. It is located within the ahupuaʻa (ancient land division) called Lalamilo, between the coastal area known as Puako, Hawaii, and the inland towns of Waimea and Waikoloa Village, Hawaii. It was commissioned in 1985 with 39 17.5 kW Jacobs wind turbines and 81 20 kW Jacobs wind turbines, yielding a total capacity of 2.3 MW.

Kai Opae is a rocky peninsula located on the island of Hawai'i. The formation was at one point called "Shrimp Water" in reference to a battle fought on the peninsula between Lonoikamakahiki and Kanaloanuiokeakawaiea warriors. There are no references as to why the battle took place.

Kīholo Bay is located in the ahupua`a (historic land division) of Pu`u Wa`awa`a in the North Kona District on the Big Island of Hawaii. the land surrounding the bay is flanked to the South by a lava flow from Mount Hualalai ca. 1801 and another flow from Mauna Loa in 1859. The land surrounding Kīholo Bay is under the authority of Hawai‘i State Parks. Approximately 2 miles long (3.2 km), it is one of the island's largest bays. Kīholo Bay is now a popular site for tourists and nature enthusiasts.

The Laplace affair or the French Incident was a military intervention by the Kingdom of France in 1839 to end the persecution of Catholics in the Kingdom of Hawaii, which had been promoted by Protestant ministers. Under the threat of war, King Kamehameha III agreed to the French demands to stop the detention of Catholic citizens and pay reparations.

KPVS and KLUA are commercial radio stations in the island of Hawaiʻi, broadcasting to the Hilo and Kailua-Kona areas on 95.9 MHz FM and 93.9 MHz FM, respectively. The two stations simulcast as The Beat, a rhythmic CHR format.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo (UH Hilo) is a public university in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. It is one of ten campuses of the University of Hawaiʻi System. It was founded as Hilo Center at Lyman Hall of the Hilo Boys School in 1945 and was a branch campus of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. In 1970 it was reorganized by an act of the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and became a campus within the newly created University of Hawaiʻi System.

The Hawaiʻi Belt Road is a modern name for the Māmalahoa Highway and consists of Hawaiʻi state Routes 11, 19, and 190 that encircle the Island of Hawaiʻi. The southern section, between Hilo and Kailua-Kona is numbered as Route 11. The section between Hilo and Waimea is Route 19. Between Waimea and Kailua-Kona, the road is split in two: the original "mauka" route (now Route 190) and a "makai" Route 19, completed in 1975, which serves as access to the Kona and Kohala Coast resorts. In the Hawaiian language, mauka means "towards the mountain" and makai means "towards the sea". These terms are commonly used in travel directions.

The Big Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex is a protected wildlife refuge administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service located on Hawaiʻi Island (commonly known as the Big Island) in the state of Hawaii. It consists of Hakalau Forest on the windward side of Mauna Kea and Kona Forest on the western side of Mauna Loa.

The Hawai'i County Police Department provides police services for the island of Hawai'i, known locally as the "Big Island". According to the 2010 Census, it covers 4,028.02 square miles (10,433 km²) of varied terrain with 185,079 residents and thousands of visitors.

Hawaiʻi Community College is a public community college with two campuses on the Island of Hawaii. It is part of the University of Hawaiʻi System and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

KCIF (90.3 FM) is a radio station in Hilo, Hawaii. The station is owned by CSN International and airs a Christian rock format as an affiliate of Effect Radio.

W. H. Shipman House is a historic home used by William Herbert Shipman. It is located at 141 Kaʻiulani Street, named for Princess Kaʻiulani, the last crown princess of the Kingdom and Liliʻuokalani's niece.

The Joint Astronomy Centre (JAC) was a management organisation based in Hilo, Hawaii, which from c.1980-2015 operated two large telescopes at Mauna Kea Observatory on behalf of an international consortium from the United Kingdom, Canada and the Netherlands, and provided support for other telescopes and public outreach activities. The JAC also maintained the Starlink Project between 2006 and 2015. Following withdrawal of funding by the partner nations, on March 1, 2015, the Joint Astronomy Centre closed and the facility was handed over to the East Asian Observatory which now runs the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope.

KHLO (850 AM) is a radio station licensed to Hilo, Hawaii, United States. The station serves the Hilo area. The station is currently owned by First Assembly King's Cathedral and Chapels.

KNWB (97.1 FM) is a radio station in Hilo, Hawaii broadcasting a classic hits format. The station is currently owned by New West Broadcasting Corporation. KNWB and sister station KMWB form a simulcast to reach all of the Big Island.

Nani Mau Gardens (20 acres) are commercial botanical gardens located at 421 Makalika Street, Hilo, Hawaiʻi on the island of Hawaiʻi, coordinates 19°40′20″N 155°3′17″W. The gardens' name, Nani Mau, means "forever beautiful". They were established by Makato Nitahara and opened to the public in 1972.

Ke Kula ʻo Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu is a Hawaiian language immersion charter school. It serves grades K-12 in Keaʻau, Puna, Hawaii Island, Hawaii. It is the largest Hawaiian immersion school on Hawaii Island.

KIHL-LP (103.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to Hilo, Hawaii, United States, the station serves the Hilo area. The station airs a format consisting of Christian talk and teaching and Jazz and is currently owned by Calvary Chapel Hilo.

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation is the world's largest processor of macadamia seeds. The American company was a subsidiary of The Hershey Company from 2004 to 2015, when it was acquired by Hawaiian Host, Inc. The company takes its name from the volcano Mauna Loa. Their headquarters and main processing plant are near the mountain, south of Hilo in the Puna District of the island of Hawaiʻi, known as the Big Island.

The Volcano Block Building is a historic structure in Hilo, Hawaii built in 1914.

Hilo Dragstrip is a dragstrip located just southeast of Hilo, Hawaii at 19°40′53″N 155°1′49″W. It is also called the Pana‘ewa Drag Strip. Hilo dragstrip opened in 1978, and is now operated by the County of Hawaiʻi. The Big Island Auto Club and the Hawaii Drag Racing League race at the strip. The biggest race events at the Hilo Drag Strip are the BIAC Memorial Day Drags and the BIAC Tommy Thompson Labor Day Drags. The track is sanctioned by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) (HDRL) (since 2003) and American Hot Rod Association (AHRA) (BIAC) (since 2015) International Hot Rod Motocross and kart racing tracks.

KIPA (1060 AM) is a radio station on the Big Island of Hawai'i whose call sign dates back to 1947, and broadcasts a Christian format as an owned an operated affiliate of CSN International. Licensed to Hilo, Hawaii, United States, the station serves the Hilo market and surrounding areas.

Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo is a parish of the Roman Catholic Church of Hawaii in the United States. Located at 43 Kapiolani Street, 19°43′20″N 155°5′25″W, in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii, the church falls under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Honolulu and its bishop. It is named after Saint Joseph, foster father of Jesus. This parish operates the St. Joseph Junior and Senior High School and an elementary school.

Banyan Drive is a tree-lined street at the shoreline of Hilo, Hawaii. It is known as the "Hilo Walk of Fame" for the banyan trees planted by celebrities. These trees have withstood several tsunamis that have devastated the town on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hilo Masonic Lodge Hall, also known as the Bishop Trust Building, is a historic structure in Hilo, Hawaii constructed between 1908 and 1910. It was designed to house commercial space on the ground floor and a meeting hall for a local Masonic lodge on the second floor. The Masons stayed until around 1985.

Waiākea is an ancient subdivision (ahupuaʻa) in the Hilo District of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi and an early settlement on Hilo Bay.

Hoʻolulu Park (officially the Hoʻolulu Park Complex; sometimes shortened to Hoʻolulu Complex) is a 56-acre (23 ha) park and recreation center operated by the County of Hawaiʻi in Hilo, Hawaii, east of the Wailoa River State Recreation Area and downtown Hilo, and west of Hilo International Airport. The venues are named for prominent figures from the Hilo area, including Hilo High School basketball coach Ung Soy "Beans" Afook, boxer and sports promoter Richard "Pablo" Chinen, coach and complex supervisor Aunty Sally Kaleohano, swim coach Charles "Sparky" Kawamoto, youth sports organizer Walter Victor, and sports booster Dr. Francis F.C. Wong. Hoʻolulu Park also is the site of the Edith Kanakaʻole Multi-Purpose Stadium, which hosts nationally prominent events, including the Hilo Orchid Show and the Merrie Monarch Festival.

Kaumana Cave is a lava tube created by a 1881 lava flow from Mauna Loa. The tube has been surveyed at 2.026 miles (2197 m) long making it the 57th longest lava tube in the world.

The Church of the Holy Apostles is an Episcopal church, located in Hilo, Hawaii, that belongs to the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii of the Episcopal Church's Province 8.

James Kealoha (4-mile) Beach Park is a swimming and snorkeling beach located in the Hilo district on the Island of Hawai'i. It is known locally as '4-mile' beach, as its location is exactly 4 miles from the Hilo town post-office. Showers and restrooms are located there, as is a lifeguard tower

KPUA (670 AM) is an American radio station licensed to serve the community of Hilo, Hawaii. The station, established in 1936 as "KHBC", has been owned and operated by New West Broadcasting Corporation since 1992. KPUA broadcasts a variety of local and syndicated talk radio programming, including some specialty Japanese language programs.

The A.J. Williamson House is a historic house located at 31 Halaulani Place in Hilo, Hawaii. The house was built in 1921 for engineer A.J. Williamson. At the time, Halaulani Place was one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Hilo. The house has a Craftsman design; the style was popular in Hawaii at the time due to its emphasis on natural materials and features. The one-story house rests on a lava rock base, which is nearly a story tall itself. The corrugated metal roof features overhanging, bracketed eaves and decorative vents below its gable ends.

Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani (KHUOK) College of Hawaiian Language is one of nine colleges and programs at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. KHUOK offers BA, MA and PhD programs in Hawaiian language and related topics including linguistics, literature, language acquisition, and indigenous cultural revitalization.

Hawaiʻi Nui Brewing Company is a brewery in Hilo on the Island of Hawaii, Hawaii, United States. It was established in 2007 by Keith Kinsey, Andrew Baker and Nina Lytton. Hawai'i Nui Brewing acquired Keoki Brewing Company in May 2007. In January 2009, Hawaii Nui Brewing acquired Mehana Brewing Company and consolidated operations to Hilo, Hawai'i. It sells Hawaiʻi Nui, Keoki and Mehana labels of beers.

The Hawaii Consolidated Railway (HCR), originally named the Hilo Railroad Company, was a standard gauge common carrier railroad that served much of the east coast of the island of Hawaiʻi (The Big Island) from 1899 until 1946, when a tsunami destroyed part of the line.

The Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain is a mostly undersea mountain range in the Pacific Ocean that reaches above sea level in Hawaii. It is composed of the Hawaiian ridge, consisting of the islands of the Hawaiian chain northwest to Kure Atoll, and the Emperor Seamounts: together they form a vast underwater mountain region of islands and intervening seamounts, atolls, shallows, banks and reefs along a line trending southeast to northwest beneath the northern Pacific Ocean. The seamount chain, containing over 80 identified undersea volcanoes, stretches about 6,200 km (3,900 mi) from the Aleutian Trench off the coast of the Kamchatka peninsula in the far northwest Pacific to the Kamaʻehuakanaloa Seamount (formerly Lōʻihi), the youngest volcano in the chain, which lies about 35 kilometres (22 mi) southeast of the Island of Hawaiʻi.

The Submillimeter Array (SMA) consists of eight 6-meter (20 ft) diameter radio telescopes arranged as an interferometer for submillimeter wavelength observations. It is the first purpose-built submillimeter interferometer, constructed after successful interferometry experiments using the pre-existing 15-meter (49 ft) James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and 10.4-meter (34.1 ft) Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (now decommissioned) as an interferometer. All three of these observatories are located at Mauna Kea Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and have been operated together as a ten element interferometer in the 230 and 345 GHz bands (eSMA, for extended Submillimeter Array). The baseline lengths presently in use range from 16 to 508 meters (52 to 1,667 ft). The radio frequencies accessible to this telescope range from 194–408 gigahertz (1.545–0.735 mm) which includes rotational transitions of dozens of molecular species as well as continuum emission from interstellar dust grains. Although the array is capable of operating both day and night, most of the observations take place at nighttime when the atmospheric phase stability is best.

Camp Tarawa was a training camp located on Hawaiʻi Island constructed and used by the 2nd Marine Division during World War II. The grounds of the camp were situated between the volcanic peak of Mauna Kea and Kohala mountain. Marines were sent straight from the bloody Battle of Tarawa to the campsite, which they had to build themselves. It was well known for its harsh and dusty conditions by Marines who trained there. After the 2d Marine Division left for Saipan, the 5th Marine Division moved into the base and trained for the Battle of Iwo Jima. The base was closed for good in November 1945.

The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, also known as Hale Pōhaku, is a complex of support facilities for the telescopes and other instruments that comprise the Mauna Kea Observatory atop Mauna Kea, on Hawaiʻi island.

Two instruments known as the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array, or SCUBA, have been used for detecting submillimetre radiation on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii.

The Mauna Kea Trail, also known as the Humuʻula Trail, is a hiking route leading from the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy to the summit of Mauna Kea, the highest volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi.

The University of Hawaiʻi 88-inch (2.24-meter) telescope—called UH88, UH2.2, or simply 88 by members of the local astronomical community—is situated at the Mauna Kea Observatories and operated by the University's Institute for Astronomy. It was constructed in 1968, and entered service in 1970, at which point it was known as "The Mauna Kea Observatory". It became one of the first professional telescopes to be controlled by a computer. The telescope was built with funding from NASA, to support Solar System missions, and is controlled by the University of Hawaiʻi. The success of the telescope helped demonstrate the value of Mauna Kea for astronomical observations.

KKOA (107.7 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Volcano, Hawaii, United States, the station serves the Hilo area. The station is currently owned by Resonate Broadcasting through licensee Resoante Hawaii LLC, and features programming from ABC Radio's "Today's Best Country" satellite feed.

KBGX (105.3 FM, "Lava 105.3") is a radio station broadcasting a classic hits format. Licensed to Keaau, Hawaii, the station serves the Hilo area. The station is currently owned by Carla Morris and Sally Dobson, through licensee Resoante Hawaii LLC, and features programming from Citadel Media's "The True Oldies Channel" satellite feed.

KTBH-FM (102.7 MHz) – branded 102.7 The Beach – is a Hot AC/Oldies formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Kurtistown, Hawaii, serving the island of Hawaii. KTBH-FM is owned and operated by Resonate Hawaii, LLC, a division of Australia-based Resonate Broadcasting.

Mauna Kea State Recreation Area also known as Mauna Kea State Park, is a state of Hawaii protected area at the southern base of Mauna Kea.

The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) protests are a series of protests and demonstrations that began on the Island of Hawaii over the choosing of Mauna Kea for the site location of the Thirty Meter Telescope. Mauna Kea is the most sacred dormant volcano of Native Hawaiian religion and culture, and was known to natives as the home to Wākea, the sky god. Protests began locally within the state of Hawaii on October 7, 2014 but went global within weeks of the April 2, 2015 arrest of 31 people who had blockaded the roadway to keep construction crews off the summit.

Ahu A ʻUmi Heiau means "shrine at the temple of ʻUmi" in the Hawaiian Language. It is also spelled "ahu-a-Umi", or known as Ahua A ʻUmi Heiau, which would mean "mound of ʻUmi". It was built for ʻUmi-a-Liloa, often called ʻUmi, who ruled the island of Hawaiʻi early in the 16th century. He moved the seat of government here from the Waipiʻo Valley. The seat of power generally remained in the Kona District until the plantation days hundreds of years later. Ahu A ʻUmi Heiau was also the place where the great chief Keawenuiaʻumi (the son of ʻUmi) hid to escape death from a strong aliʻi, Kalepuni, who attempted to take over Keawe's rule. The site was an enclosure surrounded by a number of stone cairns, up to four meters high and seven meters in diameter.

Bobcat Trail Habitation Cave is a historic site of Ancient Hawaiian living quarters in a remote interior area of the island of Hawaiʻi.
