Together with Frank Luther Mott, who was sometimes a co-editor of the journal, he organized the Saturday Luncheon Club, a literary forum that was a forerunner of the Iowa Writer's Workshop. When Frederick took a position at Northwestern University, the magazine relocated to Chicago. The Midland was never financially self-sufficient, and Frederick took on its deficits himself. Washington Township Center High School (Q30623557)
Summary from English Wikipedia (enwiki)

Washington Township Center High School, also known as the Washington Township Community Center, is a historic building located northeast of Amish, Iowa, United States. Built in 1926, this public institution was both a throw-back to the 19th-century and forward-looking at the same time. It was a throwback in that the school was financed and maintained by way of donations and tuition paid by township residents instead of taxes. It was forward-looking in that the rural people of this area recognized the need for education beyond the traditional eight grades. Because of the poor roads in the area and rural people's distrust of urban areas, where Iowa's were generally located at the time, the citizens of Washington Township chose to build a high school across the road from the elementary school. It closed in 1945, and the building continued in use as a polling place. In 1952 it became the meeting place for the local 4-H chapter. A corporation was established in 1960 to maintain the building as a community building for public functions. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Hawthorne Glove and Novelty Company-Shrader Drug Company Building (Q30625877)
Summary from English Wikipedia (enwiki)

The Hawthorne Glove and Novelty Company–Shrader Drug Company Building is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. Completed in 1906, this utilitarian three-story brick structure is located in the city's original railroad and industrial corridor south of the central business district. This was an industrial area from the 1870s to the 1940s. It replaced a recently built building on the same site by the Hawthorne Glove and Novelty Company that had been destroyed in a fire. The back of the building opened upon the rail sidings of a branch line of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway, later the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific. By the start of World War I the Shrader Drug Company occupied the building. It was one of three drug related factories that were located along the South Gilbert Street corridor at that time. The company name changed to the Hewell-Shrader Drug Company in 1930 and then the Hewell-Shrader Company in 1945 after farm fertilizer was added to its product line. The company closed in 1956, and the building was sold to the Thompson Transfer and Storage Company who used it for a warehouse. Whipple House Furniture Store took over the building three years later, and remained until 1975. In the intervening years a variety of businesses occupied the building until the 1980s when it was vacant for a period of time. In the mid-1980s The Vine Tavern occupied the basement level and the upper floors were used for artist studios. In 2012 the upper floors were converted into apartments. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Rose Hill (Q30609720)
item type: house
Summary from English Wikipedia (enwiki)

Rose Hill, also known as the Irish-Goetz House, is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was built as a farmhouse in 1849 by Frederick Irish, an early settler in this community. His descendants would own this house until 1964. After he arrived in 1839, Irish built a cabin wherein the commissioners chose the site for the new territorial capital and then the design for the building. Irish remained a prominent citizen in Iowa City who was appointed, along with former Governor Robert Lucas, to a group working to bring the railroad to Iowa City. When he built this house he chose the Greek Revival style, which might reflect his relationship with John F. Rague who designed the Capitol building here. It also reflects the housing styles of his native New York, and is very similar to the "farmhouse elevation" found in Minard Lafever's work, Young Builder's General Instructor. The house was listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

St. John's Lutheran Church (Q30607418)
Summary from English Wikipedia (enwiki)

St. John's Lutheran Church, also known as Evangelical St. John's German Lutheran Church, was a complex of historic buildings located north of Kalona, Iowa, United States. This Lutheran congregation was organized in 1870 by German immigrants who settled in southern Johnson County in the 1860s. It began as a mission under the direction of the Rev. J. Hoerlin, Sr., and it was formally incorporated in 1875. The simple frame church building was completed that same year. It rested on a concrete block foundation, from 1917, and featured three round-arch windows on the side walls and a fanlight over the main entrance. When the Rev. H. Hertle came as the first resident pastor in 1878 a two-story frame parsonage was built next to the church. Behind the church and parsonage sat an outhouse and a catechetical room that was used for children's religious instruction. Services in English were begun in 1905 because the younger members no longer spoke German.
