Limassol District

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2008 was the sixth edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, held on 22 November 2008 at the "Spyros Kyprianou" Athletic Centre in Lemesos, Cyprus, and presented by Alex Michael and Sophia Paraskeva. It was organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC). The theme of the event was "Fun in the Sun". Broadcasters from fifteen countries participated in the contest.

Troodos or Trodos is the largest mountain range in Cyprus, located in roughly the center of the island. Its highest peak is Mount Olympus – also known in Greek as Χιονίστρα – Hionistra at 1,952 metres (6,404 ft).

It hosts many retail stores, offices, towers and schools. Events held on the road include the Limassol Carnival, 25 March Parade and 28 October Parade.

The Tsirio Stadium (Greek: Τσίρειο Στάδιο) is an all-seater multi-purpose stadium in Limassol, Cyprus.

Klimonas is an archaeological site dating to the 9th millennium BC. Discovered in Cyprus at Ayios Tychonas in the Limassol District, Klimonas is the oldest known farming village in the world. The main part of the site is a subterranean circular building approximately ten metres (~40 feet) in diameter similar to communal buildings in other nearby sites.

Parekklisia (Greek: Παρεκκλησιά [locally [parekliˈʃa]]) is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located northeast of Agios Tychonas. As a village near the sea, it was first inhabited in the Early Aceramic Neolithic Period about 8200 B.C. in the site named "Shillourokambos". There, in a tomb, French archaeologists discovered the earliest domesticated cat in the world.

The Oval is a commercial high-rise building in Limassol, Cyprus. It was completed in February 2017 and opened in April 2017. With 16 stories, it is 75 metres (246 ft) tall and the tallest office building in Cyprus.

Agios Tychonas (Greek: Άγιος Τύχωνας) is a village and a Municipal District of the Amathounta Municipality in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located east of Limassol. The ancient ruins of Amathus are located near the town.

Armenochori (Greek: Αρμενοχώρι; Turkish: Esenköy; Armenian: Արմենոխորի) is an Armenian village and a Municipal District of the Amathounta Municipality located in the Limassol District of Cyprus, 10 kilometres (6 miles) northeast of the city of Limassol. Armenochori means “Armenian village” in Greek. In 1958, the Turkish Cypriots adopted the alternative name Esenköy, literally meaning “windy village.”

Limassol Molos (Greek: Μόλος Λεμεσού, romanized: Mólos Lemesoú), formally known as the Limassol Multifunctional Seaside Park, is a multifunctional park and promenade of land reclamation in Limassol, the second largest city in Cyprus. Η Τεχνητή λίμνη Κούρη είναι τεχνητή λίμνη στην Επαρχία Λεμεσού στην Κύπρο. Αποτελεί την μεγαλύτερη σε χωρητικότητα τεχνητή λίμνη της Κύπρου (115 εκατομμύρια κυβικά μέτρα). Ο ταμιευτήρας της τεχνητής λίμνης αποτελεί το 35% της ολικής χωρητικότητας των φραγμάτων της χώρας.

Η Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας Αμασγούς ή Παναγία της Αμασγούς ή Παναγία η Αμασγού ή απλώς Μονή Αμασγού είναι παλαιό χριστιανικό ορθόδοξο μοναστήρι της Κύπρου, στο έδαφος της Κοινότητας Μοναγρίου, στην Επαρχία Λεμεσού. Eίναι κτισμένο πάνω σε μικρό λόφο, κοντά στις όχθες του χειμάρρου Κούρη και απέχει περίπου 1,5 χιλιόμετρο νοτιοδυτικά του χωριού Μονάγρι.

Η Δκιά είναι χαμηλό βουνό ή λόφος της Κύπρου, που βρίσκεται στην επαρχία της Λεμεσού. Η κορυφή του έχει υψόμετρο 463 μέτρα πάνω από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας. Ολόκληρη η αρχική του ονομασία είναι «Μούττη του Δκιά», δηλαδή «Μύτη (άκρα) του Δία», και συσχετίζεται με την ύπαρξη βωμού του Δία στο ύψωμα.

Themistokleio Sports Center is an indoor arena in Limassol, Cyprus. It is the home venue of Anorthosis VC. Currently the arena has a capacity around 3,500 seats.

Mount Olympus peak and the "Troodos Square" fall under the territory of Platres in Limassol District. A British long range radar currently operates at Mount Olympus' peak. It has a highland warm-summer mediterranean climate.

Prodromos (Greek: Πρόδρομος) is the highest village in Cyprus at 1,380 metres (4,530 ft) above sea level. It is the island's main centre for winter sport, with three ski slopes located on nearby Mount Olympus. The village is part of the Limassol District. The number of inhabitants has decreased steadily over the years; by the 2011 census there were only 123 permanent residents, although there are over 240 residences that are temporarily occupied, mostly during the summer and other holidays.

Asgata (Greek: Ασγάτα) is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located 6 km northeast of Monagroulli. The village, is lying in the middle of a valley of 190 meters altitude and is considered the easternmost village in the Limassol district, located 26 km from the city center.

Kolossi Castle is a former Crusader stronghold on the south-west edge of Kolossi village 14 kilometres (9 mi) west of the city of Limassol on the island of Cyprus. It held great strategic importance in the Middle Ages, and contained large facilities for the production of sugar from the local sugarcane, one of Cyprus's main exports in the period. The original castle was possibly built in 1210 by the Frankish military, when the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Hospitallers).

The Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Center or Spyros Kyprianou Sports Centre (Greek: Αθλητικό Κέντρο "Σπύρος Κυπριανού", romanized: Athlitikó Kéntro "Spýros Kyprianoú"), also known as Spyros Kyprianou Arena and Palais des sports, is an indoor arena located in the Kato Polemidia district of Limassol, Cyprus. Opened in late 2005, it is named after the late president of Cyprus, Spyros Kyprianou and is the largest event hall in the country.

Pissouri (Greek: Πισσούρι) is a village located in Limassol district, Cyprus (Approximately thirty kilometres westwards of Limassol’s centre), between Limassol and Paphos. Pissouri’s administrative area is the third biggest in Limassol District. The main settlement of Pissouri is situated about three kilometres away from the bay named Cape Aspro, and is built on the side of a green hill. The settlement is placed in the middle of Pissouri’s territory.

Amathus or Amathous (Ancient Greek: Ἀμαθοῦς) was an ancient city and one of the ancient royal cities of Cyprus until about 300 BC. Some of its remains can be seen today on the southern coast in front of Agios Tychonas, about 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Limassol and 24 miles (39 km) west of Larnaca. Its ancient cult sanctuary of Aphrodite was the second most important in Cyprus, her homeland, after Paphos.

Kato Polemidia (Greek: Κάτω Πολεμίδια; Turkish: Aşağı Binatlı) is a municipal district of Polemidia Municipality located in the Limassol District of Cyprus. It has a population of 22,369 according to the 2011 census.

Omodos (Greek: 'Ομοδος) is a village in the Troödos Mountains of Cyprus. It is also located in the Limassol District of Cyprus and is 80 kilometers from the city of Nicosia.

Kolossi (Greek: Κολόσσι [locally [koˈlosːi]]) is a village on the outskirts of Limassol, Cyprus. It lies partly in the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. Its population in 2011 was 5,651.

Kyperounta (Greek: Κυπερούντα) is a town in Cyprus. It lies at an altitude of 1,140 meters. With a population in approximately 1,500 it can be called the head-town of Pitsilia. The town took its name from the plant Cyperus rotundus (kyperos). Kyperounda was established during the Byzantine period. At historical documents was called "Chiperonda".

Pachna (Pakhna, Πάχνα) is a village in the Limassol District of the Republic of Cyprus. It is situated on the south slopes of the Troödos mountain range at an altitude of 745 m (2447 ft).

Kato Platres (Greek: Κάτω Πλάτρες) also known as Tornarides is a mountainous village in Cyprus. It is located on the southern slopes of the Troödos Mountains (Greek: Τρόοδος) and is one of the Krasochoria (Greek: Κρασοχώρια) (wine village). Kato Platres is approximately 24 kilometers (15 mi) north-west of Limassol and 46 kilometers (29 mi) south-west of the capital Nicosia.

Lofou (Greek: Λόφου) is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located 5 km northeast of Agios Therapon. Archaeological evidence indicates the area around the village has been inhabited since at least the early to middle Bronze Age.

Ypsonas or Ipsonas (Greek: Ύψωνας, romanized: Ypsōnas, Turkish: İpsona), is a municipal district of the Kourion Municipality in the Limassol district of Cyprus. It is one of the largest municipalities in the district and is located about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) west of Limassol. The southern part of the municipal district is within the administrative borders of the British sovereign base area of Akrotiri - Episkopi. According to the Census of 2021 it has a population of 13,966.

Agios Athanasios (Greek: Άγιος Αθανάσιος) is a municipal district of the Amathounta Municipality of Cyprus located in the Limassol District. Located 3 km (1.86 mi) away from the district's capital, Limassol, and named after the Athanasius of Alexandria, it functions as a suburb of the city of Limassol and as an independent municipality from 1986 until 1 July 2024, when as a result of Local Government Reform it became a municipal district of the Amathounta Municipality. It also boasts an industrial zone with more than 110 employers.

Akapnou (Greek: Ακαπνού) is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) east of Eptagoneia. As of 2011, it had a population of 20.

Alektora (Greek: Αλέκτορα), also known as Gökağaç, is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus. It was established in the first millennium by residents of nearby villages and gradually Turkified and Islamicised during the rule of the Ottomans. It was inhabited almost exclusively by Turkish Cypriots before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and the population exchanges that occurred thereafter. The village now has a small community of Greek Cypriots.

Apesia (Greek: Aπεσιά or Απαισιά) is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located 3 kilometres (2 miles) southeast of Korfi. Although the word απαίσια in Greek when the emphasis is on the middle syllable means ugly, the name of the village is pronounced in a different way, Απαισιά and the emphasis goes on the third syllable.

Chandria (Greek: Χανδριά) is a village in Cyprus in the Limassol administrative district and belongs to the Pitsilia group of villages. At an elevation of 1,275 m (4,180 ft), it is the second highest village in Cyprus after Prodromos.

Dierona (Greek: Διερώνα) is a semi-mountainous village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located 2 km south of Arakapas at the foothills of the Troodos Mountains.

Dora (Greek: Δορά, Dhora) is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located 6 km southwest of Malia. Built at an elevation of more than 600 meters, Dora "emerges" between two rivers, Ha and Dirizo. From the above, they predate the particular settlement before the consecutive blows of the Turks, the current village stretches at the foot of Mount Kordylas, said to resemble the hat worn by the ancient Carian, and perhaps synifasmenos to who were the first inhabitants of Dora, the Dorians who came to Cyprus through Caria of Asia Minor.

Dymes (Greek: Δύμες) is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located 4 km south of Kyperounta.

Episkopi (Greek: Επισκοπή, Turkish: Piskobu) is a village and a municipal district of the Kourion Municipality lying partly in the Limassol district of Cyprus and partly in the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. Its current Deputy Mayor is Lefkios Prodromou. It is approximately 14 km (9 mi) west of Limassol and 40 km (25 mi) east of Paphos. Episkopi is built on the hill of ancient Kourion, close to the western bank of the Kouris River.

Eptagoneia (Greek: Επταγώνεια) or Eftagoneia (Εφταγώνεια) is a village in the Limassol District of Cyprus, located 4 km north of Kellaki.

Erimi is a village lying partly in the Limassol District of Cyprus and partly in the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. It has a population of 1,432 according to the 2001 census. It has recently increased in size with the addition of the district "Aphrodite Gardens", a new area just developed for expatriates of mainly British origin.

Moni Power Station is the second power plant the Electricity Authority of Cyprus built. It is located some 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of Limassol. Construction started in the 1960s and when completed it consisted of six steam turbogenerators each having a capacity of 30 MW. Heavy fuel oil was fired in all boilers. All six steam turbogenerators have been decommissioned and are in storage as of 2013.

Platres is the largest Troodos resort, situated about 5km from Troodos Square, 25 kilometers (16 mi) north-west of Limassol and 45 kilometers (28 mi) south-west of the capital Nicosia. Platres is a very old village and is mentioned among the 119 villages of the Limassol district that existed during the Lusignan Era (1192-1489 AD) and the Venetian Era (1489-1571 AD). Platres is the principal hill resort of Cyprus. The town has a resident population of fewer than 300, but this can swell to 10,000 during tourist seasons.

The Governor's Beach (Greek: Ακτή του Κυβερνήτη) is located partly in the Larnaca and in the Limassol region. It is a 2 km shoreline, with sandy beaches, deep crystal waters and a blue flag waving. The area is unknown to most locals and tourists. Because of the structure of the shoreline, consisting of well-hidden small coves, it is one of the few semi-official nudist beach spots in Cyprus.

Omonoia (Greek: Ομόνοια pronounced [oˈmo.ni.a]), is a quarter in the municipality of Limassol in the Limassol District of Cyprus. It is situated near the Port of Limassol. The quarter takes its name from the Omonoias Avenue. It borders Saint Spyridonas to the west and Agios Ioannis to the east. Many central avenues go by around Omonoia, namely Pafou Avenue, Omonoias Avenue, Franklin Roosevelt Avenue and Makarios Avenue, making it a high traffic area.

One Limassol, otherwise known as simply One, is a high-rise apartment building in Limassol, Cyprus. Construction for the project was meant to begin in early 2016, but was pushed back to November 2017. It has a total of 38 floors and it rises to a height of 170 meters (558 ft.), making it the tallest building in Cyprus. One Tower was designed by architect Hakim Khennouchi (WKK Architects) and Eraclis Papachristou Architects (Architects of record). Structural design was completed by Buro Happold Engineering and PPA.

Zoopigi (Greek: Ζωοπηγή) is a village one kilometre north of Kalo Chorio in the Limassol District of Cyprus. The church of St. Mary of the Spring is the oldest. It was built in the 13th century AD. It is single-aisled wooden church covered with a large gabled roof as with the church of Saint Marina.
