The valley was known as a center of resistance to the Germans during the Battle of Crete and the German occupation. After the abduction of General Heinrich Kreipe, the German army destroyed a number of villages in the area, killing more than 160 of their inhabitants.

It was established around 1250 AD. Esmiliano ou Smiliano é uma garganta pela qual percorre o rio Ligiótis, o afluente do rio Platís Potamós. Estende-se por 2,5 quilômetros e se inicia nas cercanias da vila de Retimno, próximo a abandonada localidade de Esmile. Pouco depois de Esmile há uma porte com arco e 50 metros a frente está a entrada da garganta, onde uma grande lagoa está situada. Deste ponto, a garganta segue percurso em direção a leste.

Santo Antônio (em grego: Μονή του Αγίου Αντωνίου; romaniz.: Moní tou Agíou Antoníou é um mosteiro bizantino abandonado situado no topo da colina Veni, próximo das vilas de Pantánassa e Voleones, no vale Amári. O local onde foi erigido é utilizado desde o período minoico como local de culto. É formado por dois templos, um no interior de uma caverna homônima e outro no exterior. No templo da caverna é possível encontrar jarros de barro e os restos mortais dos monges. Há também uma fenda pela qual brota um córrego d'água, que se acredita ter sido feita pelos minoicos. Diz-se que os moradores das vilas vizinhas ainda mantêm um antigo hábito de depositarem vegetais e ovos na caverna para abençoar os monges.
