Vai (Greek: Βάι), Greek for "palm", is a region of east Crete between Cape Sidero and Cape Plaka, just south of the site of ancient Itanus but north of the villages that surround and are part of Palaikastro. Vai does not belong to them nor is it part of any civic unit of the local civic division of Greece. It is not itself an official village. The region is somewhat isolated on the isolated northeast peninsula, connecting only to Eparchos odos moni Toplou, the only road between Palaikastro and Toplou Monastery. The entire distance is essentially trackless and deserted, as the name of one of the beaches at Itanus suggests, Eremoupolis, "deserted city".

During the summer, the island is visited by tour boats from the port of Makry Gialos approximately 18 km (11 miles) away.

The town has 11,166 inhabitants and the municipality has 20,438 (2021). It lies east of Agios Nikolaos and northeast of Ierapetra. Sitia's port is on the Sea of Crete, part of the Aegean Sea and is one of the economic centers of the Lasithi region. European route E75 (which ends in Vardø, Norway) starts in Sitia. The town is served by the Sitia Public Airport. It is a state protected park near Exo Mouliana, Sitia, eastern Crete (Greece) that starts at the traditional village Exo Mouliana, which is located on the national road between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia and ends at the secluded Richtis beach, just east of the village Kalavros. The hiking trail is about 4 km in length of moderate (spring/summer/autumn) to hard (winter) difficulty. Elevation difference between the starting point and the beach is about 350 meters. Rich vegetation (mainly platanus trees, wild berries and local flowers and herbs) and animal life (mainly local species of butterflies, small reptiles, birds and small mammals) can be observed along the way, as well as old stone bridges and water mills before it culminates with the Richtis Waterfall and beach, making Richtis gorge trail one of the most diversified hiking experiences in Crete.

Επίσης περιλαμβάνει σπάνια θεματολογία αγιογραφιών που αφορούν την Παλαιά Διαθήκη και συγκεκριμένα την Γένεση, όπως και θεματολογία από λεπτομέρειες των ευαγγελικών διηγήσεων. Το φαράγγι των Νεκρών, γνωστό και ως φαράγγι της Κάτω Ζάκρου, είναι φαράγγι το οποίο βρίσκεται στον δήμο Σητείας, στην ανατολική Κρήτη, στην Ελλάδα. Το φαράγγι ξεκινάει από την Επάνω Ζάκρο και καταλήγει στην Κάτω Ζάκρο, κοντά στο μινωικό ανάκτορο. Το όνομα φαράγγι των νεκρών δόθηκε από τον Νικόλαο Πλάτωνα επειδή στα τοιχώματα του φαραγγιού έχουν βρεθεί μινωικοί τάφοι.
