The Murat River, also called Eastern Euphrates (Turkish: Murat Nehri, Kurdish: Çemê Miradê, Armenian: Արածանի, romanized: Aratsani), is a major source of the Euphrates River. The Ancient Greeks and Romans used to call the river Arsanias (Ancient Greek: Ἀρσανίας). It originates near Mount Ararat north of Lake Van, in Eastern Turkey, and flows westward for 722 km (449 mi) through mountainous terrain. Before the construction of the Keban Dam, the Murat River joined the Karasu River or Western Euphrates 10 km (6.2 mi) north of the dam site and 13 km (8.1 mi) north of the town of Keban.

The Tatar Dam is an earth-fill dam on the Peri River (a tributary of the Euphrates), near the village of Tatarköy in Kovancılar district of Elazığ Province, Turkey. Its primary purpose is hydroelectric power generation and is the sixth and last dam in the Peri River cascade, before Lake Keban. Construction on the dam began in 2008 and it began impounding its reservoir in early 2013. The power station was commissioned in late 2015. Its two generators were commissioned in February/March 2015. The 82 m (269 ft) tall dam withholds a reservoir of 299,570,000 m3 (242,870 acre⋅ft). It is owned and operated by Limak Energy and Bilgin Energy.

The 2010 Elazığ earthquake was a 6.1 Mw earthquake that occurred on 8 March 2010 at 02:32 UTC (04:32 local time). The epicentre was Başyurt in Elazığ Province, in eastern Turkey. Initial reports in global media said as many as 57 people had died. By 10 March, reports in the Turkish media placed the death toll at 41 and later, the death toll rose to 42. Another 74 were injured, many after falling and jumping from buildings. A stampede through the streets led to further injuries.

Arsamosata (Middle Persian: *Aršāmšād, Old Persian: *Ṛšāma-šiyāti-, Ancient Greek: Ἀρσαμόσατα, Armenian: Արշամաշատ, romanized: Aršamašat) was an ancient and medieval city situated on the bank of the Murat River (called the Arsanias in classical sources), near the present-day city of Elazığ. It was founded in c. 240 BC by Arsames I, the Orontid king of Sophene, Commagene and possibly Armenia. The city served as a central center and royal residence of the Orontids of Sophene. The origin of its name is Persian, meaning "Joy of Arsames". Naming cities such as the "joy of" or "happiness of" was an Orontid (and later Artaxiad) practice that recalled the Achaemenid royal discourse.

Şemsiyetepe Höyüğü, Elazığ il merkezinin batısında, Bilaluşağı Köyü'nün hemen güneyinde yer alan bir höyüktür. Höyüğün büyük bir bölümü günümüzde Karakaya Baraj Gölü kıyısında kalmıştır. Höyük, 70 x 90 metre ölçülerinde, 5-6 metre yükseklikte dairesel ve küçük bir tepedir. The 2020 Elazığ earthquake occurred at 20:55 local time (17:55 UTC) on 24 January in Turkey. The magnitude of the earthquake was determined to be 6.7 Mw. The earthquake's epicentre was close to the town of Sivrice in Elazığ Province and felt in the neighbouring provinces of Diyarbakır, Malatya and Adıyaman, and the neighbouring countries of Armenia, Syria and Iran. Kandilli Observatory reported the magnitude of the earthquake as 6.5 Mw . A total of 41 people were killed and more than 1,600 were injured.
