Northampton County

The Chesapeake Bay impact crater is a buried impact crater, located beneath the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, United States. It was formed by a bolide that struck the eastern shore of North America about 35.5 ± 0.3 million years ago, in the late Eocene epoch. It is one of the best-preserved "wet-target" impact craters in the world.

Cape Charles is a headland, or cape, in Northampton County, Virginia. Located at the southern tip of Northampton County, it forms the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula and the northern side of the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. Cape Charles was named in honor of Charles I of England, the second son of King James I and his eventual successor to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

The third USS Philadelphia was the flagship of Rear Admiral Samuel Phillips Lee when he commanded the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron during the American Civil War.

Virginia's Eastern Shore is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) which encompasses a 70 miles (113 km) length of Virginia's Eastern Shore and consists of Accomack and Northampton Counties. The viticultural area topography is primarily level ranging from sea level to 50 feet (15 m) above sea level. The area is located on the southern end of the Delmarva Peninsula. The AVA climate is characterized by temperate summers and winters, significantly affected by the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The soil is deep, sandy loam.

The Hog Island Light was a lighthouse roughly marking its eponymous island, and thus the north side of the Great Machipongo Inlet on the Virginia coast. Originally, no light existed between Cape Henlopen, Delaware and Cape Charles. In 1830 the United States Congress appropriated money for a coastal beacon in the general vicinity of Chincoteague Island. The following year, the Collector of Customs in Norfolk selected Assateague Island.

Cape Charles Air Force Station is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is located 3.6 miles (5.8 km) south of Townsend, Virginia. It was closed in 1981. From 1941 to 1948 it was Fort John Custis of the United States Army Coast Artillery Corps. Since 1984 the site has been in the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. For this article's purposes the term "Fort John Custis" includes the nearby Fisherman Island.

Eyre Hall is a plantation house located in Northampton, Virginia, close to Cheriton, and owned by the Eyre family since 1668. The property is one of the state's best preserved colonial homes with gardens among the oldest in the United States. The plantation was placed on the National Register on November 12, 1969. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on March 2, 2012.

Cape Charles Coastal Habitat Natural Area Preserve is a 50-acre (20 ha) Natural Area Preserve located in Northampton County, Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay side of Virginia's Eastern Shore. The small preserve protects coastal beach, dune, and maritime forest habitat, preserving a home for the northeastern beach tiger beetle (Cicindela dorsalis), listed as threatened in the United States. Coast bedstraw (Galium hispidulum) grows on the dunes. The preserve serves as a staging area for southward-bound migratory birds in the fall.

The Cherrystone Bar Light was a lighthouse located at the entrance to Cape Charles, Virginia harbor in the Chesapeake Bay. It was the only light in the bay moved to another location, becoming the Choptank River Light in 1921.

The Old Plantation Flats Light was a lighthouse located in the Chesapeake Bay marking the channel to Cape Charles, Virginia.

WWIP is a Contemporary Christian and Religious formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Cheriton, Virginia, serving the Cape Charles/Norfolk/Hampton area. WWIP is owned and operated by Delmarva Educational Association.

WFAJ (96.9 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Nassawadox, Virginia, and serving the Eastern Shore of Virginia. WFAJ is owned and operated by Hispanic Target Media, Inc. It carries a Spanish-language Regional Mexican radio format, known as "Radio Amigo." Programming is shared on a number of similar stations in the U.S., all known as Radio Amigo.

Kiptopeke State Park is a state park located in the southern end of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula in Northampton County, near Cape Charles. From 1949, the site was owned by the Virginia Ferry Corporation and used through 1964 as the northern terminus for the Little Creek-Cape Charles Ferry service which crossed the lower Chesapeake Bay from the Eastern Shore / Delmarva to Norfolk and Hampton Roads harbor on the Western Shore. In 1964, the ferry service was replaced by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel which opened up giving automobile traffic convenient access to the park, the Cape, Delmarva and "The Shore" to the urban centers to the west in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Magothy Bay Natural Area Preserve is a 445-acre (1.80 km²) Natural Area Preserve located in Northampton County, Virginia. The preserve encompasses woodlands, wetlands, and salt marshes, providing foraging areas for various species of waterfowl, shorebirds, and wading birds. Diamondback terrapins and clapper rails are frequent visitors, as are many varieties of songbird.

Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve is a 298-acre (121 ha) Natural Area Preserve located in Northampton County, Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay. Fifty-foot-tall (15 m) dunes within the preserve are among the highest points on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The preserve contains beach, dune, and maritime forest natural communities of various sorts, as well as habitat for migratory songbirds and northeastern beach tiger beetles. Regionally rare plants at the preserve include Engelmann's umbrella-sedge (Cyperus engelmannii), dwarf burhead (Echinodorus tenellus), and southern bladderwort (Utricularia juncea).

WROX-FM (96.1 MHz) is an alternative rock formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Exmore, Virginia, serving Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore of Virginia. WROX-FM is owned and operated by Sinclair Telecable, Inc. WROX's studios are located on Waterside Drive in Downtown Norfolk, and its transmitter is located in Cape Charles.

Pear Valley is a one-room yeoman's cottage and prime example of vernacular architecture in Eastville, Virginia. The modest embellishments and its high level of preservation make it one of the most architecturally interesting examples of small, historic homes in Virginia.

Almshouse Farm at Machipongo, now known as the Barrier Islands Center, is a historic almshouse for Northampton County residents. Residents, also known as "inmates", included those sent for unpaid debts but also included homeless people, the mentally ill, orphans and those with diseases like tuberculosis and smallpox. "Inmates" were generally directed by the court to live at the almshouse. The Almshouse Farm served as the site for the Northampton County poorhouse for almost 150 years, from 1804 until 1952. African-Americans were housed in a separate building on the property located at Machipongo, Northampton County, Virginia. The oldest of the three main buildings was built about 1725, and is a 1 1/2-half story structure built in two parts, one brick and one frame, and probably predates the almshouse use of the property. The main building was built about 1840, and is a frame, two-story building in the vernacular Greek Revival style. It housed residents of the almshouse farm. A building dated to 1910, is a one-story frame building in a form resembling that of one-story frame school buildings from the same period and was specifically constructed to separately house African-American residents. There were 10 rooms for the black poor, and no in-house plumbing. This building was renovated in 2013 and now serves as the BIC Education Building. Also on the property are two contributing small, frame, late-19 or early 20th-century outbuildings. The Northampton County Almshouse Farm was in continuous operation between 1803 and 1952.

Kendall Grove is a historic plantation house located near Eastville, Virginia, United States. It was built about 1813, and is a two-story, Federal style wood-frame house with two-story projecting pavilions on the front and the rear and smaller two-story wings on each end added about 1840. It is cross-shaped in plan. The main house is joined by a long passage to a wood-frame kitchen-laundry. The house was improved about 1840, with the addition of Greek Revival style interior details. It was the home of Congressman and General Severn E. Parker. The home has the name of Colonel William Kendall, the original owner of the site.

Westerhouse House is a historic home located near Bridgetown, Northampton County, Virginia. It dates to about 1700, and is a small, one-story, four-bay, farmhouse with a steep gable roof and asymmetrical elevations. It features an exterior end chimney with a heavy pyramidal base, long sloping tiled weatherings and squat free-standing stack.

Eastville Mercantile, also known as Eastville Drugstore, is a historic commercial building located at Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built about 1850, and is a two-story, rectangular frame building located in the center of the town's historic main thoroughfare. It measures 18 feet wide by 50 feet deep and has a front gable roof with unadorned bargeboard. It is in the form of a traditional Chesapeake store. The first floor contains a large rectangular sales room and a small counting room, while the second floor contains a storage room and an apartment.

Brownsville is a historic home located near Nassawadox, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built in 1806, and is a two-story, brick structure with a gable roof and interior end chimney. A 1+1⁄2-story frame wing was added in 1809. The interior features Federal style woodwork.

Selma is a historic plantation house located at Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia. The original section of the manor house was built about 1785, and was a two-story, three-bay with a side-passage and single pile plan topped with a gambrel roof. The house was later modified and expanded and is in the form of a "big house, little house, colonnade, kitchen." Also on the property are the contributing attached kitchen, two cemeteries, a shed, the brick foundation floor of a former kitchen, and a boxwood garden.

Benjamin's Department Store, also known as Peebles Department Store, is a historic commercial building located at Exmore, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built about 1910, and is a three-story, brick building in the Italianate style located at the most prominent corner at the core of the town. It features a metal cornice and storefronts on the west and south elevations.

Vaucluse is a historic plantation house located near Bridgetown, Northampton County, Virginia. It is a complex, two-story, ell-shaped brick and frame structure with a gable roof. Attached to the house is a 1+1⁄2-story quarter kitchen with brick ends. The brickended section of the house was built about 1784, with the addition to the house added in 1829. The annex connecting the house with the old kitchen was probably added in 1889. It was the home of Secretary of State Abel P. Upshur (1790–1844) who died in the USS Princeton disaster of 1844. His brother U.S. Navy Commander George P. Upshur (1799–1852), owned nearby Caserta from 1836 to 1847.

Cessford is a historic plantation house located at Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built about 1801, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, Federal style brick dwelling with a later two-story brick addition. It has a slate covered gable roof and features central pedimented porches on the north and south facades. Also on the property are a contributing smokehouse, quarter kitchen, a utility building, and the original pattern of a garden. During the American Civil War, Brigadier General Henry Hayes Lockwood on July 23, 1862, commandeered the property for his headquarters and remained in residence of the property throughout the war.

John W. Chandler House, also known as Mears House, is a historic home located at Exmore, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built in 1889–1890, and is a large two-story, frame Queen Anne style dwelling. It features a complex hipped-cross-gabled roof clad in slate shingles; a tower with octagonal roof; a two-story, projecting, canted bay capped by a closed gable; projecting curved bay, crowned by a closed gable with Palladian-style window; and a wrap around porch with Tuscan order columns. Also on the property are a contributing garage and sheds.

Northampton Lumber Company Historic District is a historic saw mill and building supply store complex and national historic district located at Nassawadox, Northampton County, Virginia. The district encompasses seven contributing buildings and three contributing structures. They are the retail store (c. 1887), water tower (c. 1887), saw mill (c. 1887), potato shed, barn (c. 1912), 1940s shed, two lumber sheds, and two sets of New York, Pennsylvania, & Norfolk Railroad tracks. The Northampton Lumber Company has been an integral part of the history and livelihood of Nassawadox for over a century.

Grapeland is a historic plantation home located near Wardtown, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built about 1825, and is a two-story, three-bay, gable-roofed, Federal style brick house. It has a one-story, brick wing added in the mid-19th century. Also on the property are the contributing four-bay, frame kitchen building with a central chimney and an early 19th-century frame stable.

Stratton Manor is a historic plantation house located near Cape Charles, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built in the third quarter of the 18th century, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, single-pile, gable roof house with a wood-frame core of three bays with brick ends. A two-story ell was added in the first quarter of the 20th century. It is a characteristic example of the 18th-century vernacular architecture distinctive of Virginia's Eastern Shore.

Glebe of Hungar's Parish is a historic glebe house located at Franktown, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built sometime between 1643 and 1745, and is a 1 1/2-story, brick, structure with gable roof, dormers, and two interior end chimneys. It was the official residence of the ministers of Hungar's Parish from 1745 until 1850. The Glebe is not actually in Franktown but about 10 miles southwest on the shores of Chesapeake Bay.

Wreck Island Natural Area Preserve is a 1,380-acre (5.6 km²) Natural Area Preserve located in Northampton County, Virginia. One of the Virginia Barrier Islands, it protects various marsh, beach, grassland, dune, and shrubland habitats. It was designated as part of the National Audubon Society's "Barrier Island/Lagoon System Important Bird Area" for its importance as a nursery for nesting bird colonies. The island, which is slowly migrating towards the mainland, formerly featured dune-like mounds of shells which were destroyed by Hurricane Isabel.

William B. Trower Bayshore Natural Area Preserve is a Natural Area Preserve located in Northampton County, Virginia. A small preserve with no public facilities, it is located on the Chesapeake Bay, and contains beach strand and dune communities. It supports a population of the northeastern beach tiger beetle, as well as some scrubland and woodland areas.

James Brown's Dry Goods Store is a historic dry goods store located at Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built about 1880, and is a two-story, three-bay, rectangular frame commercial building located in the center of the town's historic main thoroughfare. It measures 32 feet wide by 100 feet deep. The front facade features a wide full-length porch, highly decorative molding over the transom of the display windows, and a stylized Palladian window framed with Stick / Eastlake trim.

Oak Grove is a historic plantation house located near Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia. The original section of the manor house was built about 1750, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, gambrel-roofed colonial-period structure. It has a two-story Federal style wing added about 1811, and a two-story Greek Revival style wing added about 1840. The house was remodeled and enlarged in the 1940s. Also on the property are the contributing five early outbuildings, three 20th century farm buildings, and a well tended formal garden designed by the Richmond landscape architect Charles Gillette.

Winona is a historic home located near Bridgetown, Northampton County, Virginia. It dates to about 1681, and is a small, 1+1⁄2-story, brick structure with a gable roof. It measures 32 feet, 6 inches, by 27 feet 6 inches. It features an exterior end chimney with three free-standing stacks set diagonally on the base.

The Chesapeake campaign, also known as the Chesapeake Bay campaign, of the War of 1812 was a British naval campaign that took place from 23 April 1813 to 14 September 1814 on and around the Delaware and Chesapeake bays of the United States.
