The Broads

The Bombardment of Yarmouth and Lowestoft, often referred to as the Lowestoft Raid, was a naval battle fought during the First World War between the German Empire and the British Empire in the North Sea.

Bramerton Pits is a 0.7-hectare (1.7-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of the village of Bramerton in Norfolk on the southern banks of the River Yare. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.

Boardman's Drainage Windmill is located at How Hill in the English county of Norfolk It is on the east bank of the River Ant close to the large Edwardian building houses the Norfolk Broads Study Centre. The Drainage mill is 1+1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) west of the village of Ludham. The structure is a grade II* listed building.

Breydon Water is a 514.4-hectare (1,271-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. It is a Local Nature Reserve, a Ramsar site and a Special Protection Area. It is part of the Berney Marshes and Breydon Water nature reserve, which is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

Buckenham is a small village in the civil parish of Strumpshaw, in the Broadland district, Norfolk, England. It is situated on the northern bank of the River Yare, around 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Norwich. In 1931, the parish had a population of 128.

Bure Marshes National Nature Reserve (NNR) is a national nature reserve within The Broads National Park in Norfolk, England. Created in 1958, the reserve covers 451.5 hectares of wetland within the floodplain of the River Bure.

Breydon Viaduct was a railway bridge across the River Yare near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, that was built by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GN).

Berney Marshes and Breydon Water RSPB reserve is a nature reserve managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Berney Marshes is situated south of the River Bure while Breydon water is the combined estuary of the River Waveney and the River Yare inland from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England.

Herringfleet is a place and former civil parish, now in the parish of Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet, in the East Suffolk district, in the north of the English county of Suffolk. It is located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) north-west of Lowestoft. The parish was combined with Somerleyton and Ashby to create the parish of "Somerleyton, Ashby and Herringfleet" on 1 April 1987.

Haddiscoe High Level was a railway station in Haddiscoe, Norfolk serving the now closed Yarmouth-Beccles Line. It obtained its name due to its close proximity to Haddiscoe railway station which served the Wherry Lines. The station was closed in 1959 at the same time as the line it served.

Heigham Holmes is a national nature reserve located within the Norfolk Broads in the English county of Norfolk. The reserve is, in effect, an island, being surrounded by the river channels, drainage ditches and wetland areas of the Broads. It is only accessible by an unusual floating swing bridge across the River Thurne from the village of Martham.

The Halvergate Marshes are an area of grazing marsh in the east of the English county of Norfolk. They form part of the area of The Broads and lie between the River Bure and the River Yare, bordering Breydon Water on the east. The marshes cover an area of around 2,642 hectares (26.42 km²; 10.20 sq mi) An area of 1,432.7-hectare (3,540-acre) is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. Some areas are also in the Breydon Water Local Nature Reserve, the Broadland and Breydon Water Ramsar sites, The Broads Special Area of Conservation, and The Broads and Breydon Water Special Protection Areas.

Herringfleet Priory (also St Olave's Priory) was an Augustinian priory of Black Canons located in St Olaves, 6 miles (9.7 km) north-west of Lowestoft in eastern England. The site is in the county of Norfolk, although prior to 1974 it was part of the former Suffolk parish of Herringfleet. Founded in 1239, the priory was situated near the ancient ferry across the River Waveney. The priory of SS. Mary and Olave was founded by Sir Roger Fitz Osbert of Somerley in the time of Henry III. The remains consist of the undercroft, two aisles of the Lady Chapel, and the refectory, now a barn.

Strumpshaw Fen is a nature reserve managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). It is situated at Strumpshaw on the River Yare in the English county of Norfolk around 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Norwich. The Buckenham Marshes RSPB reserve borders the reserve to the east.

Calthorpe Broad is a 43.5-hectare (107-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Stalham in Norfolk. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I and a national nature reserve. It is also part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Claxton Castle in the village of Claxton, Norfolk, is a ruined brick castle some 13 km southeast of Norwich.

Clayrack Drainage Windmill is located at How Hill in the English county of Norfolk. It is on the east bank of the River Ant close to How Hill, a large Edwardian building which houses the Norfolk Broads Study Centre. The Drainage mill is 1¾ miles west of the village of Ludham.

Catfield Fen is a wetland nature reserve near Ludham in the county of Norfolk, England. Butterfly Conservation owns and manages part of this reserve. Part of the Ant Broads & Marshes National Nature Reserve, the Butterfly Conservation part of the site comprises 59 acres (24 ha). The remainder is owned privately by the Catfield Hall Estate.

Ludham Bridge is a hamlet on the River Ant on the Norfolk Broads in Norfolk, England. It carries road traffic from Wroxham to Potter Heigham on the A1062. The bridge has 2.59 metres (8 feet 6 inches) mean headroom for vessels and to the north has 130 metres of free 24 hours public mooring available to river craft. Whilst Ludham Bridge is largely thought to have been built by aliens, there are some who believe it to be man made.

Mid-Yare NNR is a national nature reserve in Norfolk, east of Norwich, established by English Nature and managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). The reserve is made up of four RSPB reserves: Strumpshaw Fen, Buckenham Marshes and Cantley Marshes on the north bank of the Yare, and Surlingham Church Marsh on the south bank.

The three largest are Rollesby Broad, Ormesby Broad and Filby Broad, and there are two much smaller broads named Lily Broad and Ormesby Little Broad. They are managed by the Broads Authority.

Whitlingham was a station in Whitlingham, Norfolk, England. The station was demolished following closure. However, the footbridge remains in place to allow pedestrians to cross the railway.

The Breydon Bridge is a single-span drawbridge carrying the A47 in Great Yarmouth across the River Yare close to Breydon Water. It replaces the former railway Breydon Viaduct which was closed in 1953 and demolished by 1963. Completed in 1985, an average of 31,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day.

South Broads Lifeboat Station was an RNLI operated lifeboat station located on Oulton Broad in the town of Lowestoft in the English county of Suffolk. The station operated between 2001 and 2011. The station covered the southern area of The Broads network, an area of over 100 square miles (260 km²) of inland waterways including the River Waveney. The station performed 194 rescues.

Brograve Mill is a windpump located on Brograve level in the parish of Sea Palling within the Norfolk Broads National Park, United Kingdom. It can be found at grid reference TG448235 and is approximately 1 mile north of Horsey Mere. The mill is a Grade II listed building.

Lambridge Mill also known as Lambrigg Mill is a wind pump located in the parish of Sea Palling within the Norfolk Broads National Park, United Kingdom and can be found at grid reference grid reference TG431252, it is approximately 2 miles southwest of Waxham. The wind pump is a grade II listed building.

According to 19th-century directories, Nowhere or No-Where is a marshy area by the River Bure where the villagers of Acle, Norfolk had salt-pans to produce salt for food preservation, etc. In 1861 there were four inhabited houses and 16 people.

Oulton Dyke is a freshwater stretch of water in the Norfolk Broads, located in Suffolk within the United Kingdom. The dyke connects Oulton Broad near Lowestoft to the River Waveney by means of a confluence near the village of Burgh St Peter.

Rockland Broad is an area of open water, known as a broad, located north east of the village of Rockland St. Mary in the English county of Norfolk. The broad is in the Broads protected area. It comprises an area of approximately 50 acres (200,000 m²) and is surrounded by marshland and tall reed beds. It is linked to the River Yare by two dykes, the Short Dyke and the Fleet Dyke.

The A12 is a major road in Eastern England. It runs north-east/south-west between London and the coastal town of Lowestoft in the north-eastern corner of Suffolk, following a similar route to the Great Eastern Main Line until Ipswich. A section of the road between Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth became part of the A47 in 2017. Between the junctions with the M25 and the A14, the A12 forms part of the unsigned Euroroute E30 (prior to 1985, it was the E8). Unlike most A roads, this section of the A12, together with the A14 and the A55, has junction numbers as if it were a motorway.

Hardley Flood is a 49.8-hectare (123-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Loddon, between Norwich, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

The Ranworth rood screen at Church of St Helen, Ranworth, Norfolk, is a wooden medieval rood screen that divides the chancel and nave, and was originally designed to act to separate the laity from the clergy. It is described by English Heritage as "one of England's finest painted screens".

Hobb's Mill, also known as Hobbs Drainage Mill, is an open trestle windpump which stands by the side of the River Bure in Horning, North Norfolk, England, and is a Grade II* listed structure.

Barnby Broad and Marshes is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the Waveney district of the English county of Suffolk. The site is 189.6 hectares (469 acres) in size. It is in the parishes of North Cove and Barnby, located between Beccles and Lowestoft in the north of the county. The site is bordered on its southern edge by the East Suffolk railway line and to the north by the River Waveney. It is a Special Area of Conservation, a Special Protection Area under the EC Birds Directive, and a Ramsar internationally important wetland site. There are two Suffolk Wildlife Trust nature reserves in the site, Castle Marshes and North Cove.

Roos Hall (or sometimes Rose Hall) is a manor house and former manor ½ a mile (¾km) west of Beccles in Suffolk. It is a Grade I listed building.

Surlingham Church Marsh is a small RSPB nature reserve in the Norfolk Broads, England. It is part of Yare Broads and Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest

The Reedham Ferry Drainage Mill, also known as The Red Mill is a former drainage windmill found on the River Yare on The Broads in Norfolk. It is now a privately owned holiday home.

Sprat's Water and Marshes, Carlton Colville is a 57.1-hectare (141-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the western outskirts of Lowestoft in Suffolk, England. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar internationally important wetland site, and Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds, and part of The Broads Special Area of Conservation. The northern part of the site is Carlton Marshes, which is part of Carlton and Oulton Marshes, a nature reserve managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Ant Broads and Marshes is a 745.3-hectare (1,842-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-east of Norwich in Norfolk. Most of it is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade 1, and it is part of the Broadland Ramsar and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation. Part of it is the Barton Broad nature reserve, which is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, and two areas are National Nature Reserves.

Bure Broads and Marshes is a 741.1-hectare (1,831-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-east of Norwich in Norfolk. Most of it is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I and National Nature Reserve. Two areas are nature reserves managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Cockshoot Broad and Ranworth Broad. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area and The Broads Special Area of Conservation,

Geldeston Meadows is a 14-hectare (35-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Geldeston in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Damgate Marshes, Acle is a 64.7-hectare (160-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest between Norwich and Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Stanley and Alder Carrs, Aldeby is a 42.7-hectare (106-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Gillingham in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Carlton and Oulton Marshes is a 151 hectare nature reserve in Lowestoft in Suffolk. It is managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Carlton Marshes is part of the Sprat's Water and Marshes, Carlton Colville Site of Special Scientific Interest, the Broadland Ramsar internationally important wetland site, the Broadland Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Cantley Marshes is a 272.1-hectare (672-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of Norwich in Norfolk. It is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, The Broads Special Area of Conservation and the Mid-Yare National Nature Reserve.

Priory Meadows, Hickling is a 23.9-hectare (59-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of North Walsham in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Shallam Dyke Marshes, Thurne is a 69.8-hectare (172-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south-east of Norwich in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Bath Hills is a 12.2-hectare (30-acre) Local Nature Reserve west of Ditchingham in Norfolk. It is owned by South Norfolk District Council and managed by the Broads Authority.

Thorpe Marshes is a 25-hectare (62-acre) nature reserve east of Norwich in Norfolk. It is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

Mutford and Lothingland Rural District was a rural district within the administrative county of East Suffolk between 1894 and 1934. It was created out of the earlier Mutford and Lothingland rural sanitary district. It was named after the historic hundred of Mutford and Lothingland, whose boundaries it closely matched.

Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes is a 1,185.9-hectare (2,930-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Part of it is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, and it is in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation. Two areas, Hickling Broad and Martham Broad, are national nature reserves managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

Upton Broad and Marshes is a 195.4-hectare (483-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Norwich in Norfolk. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I and a larger area of 318-hectare (790-acre) is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Yare Broads and Marshes is a 744.5-hectare (1,840-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Norwich in Norfolk, England. Part of the site, is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I and most of it is in the Mid-Yare National Nature Reserve. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation. Two ares are Royal Society for the Protection of Birds nature reserves, Strumpshaw Fen and Surlingham Church Marsh.

Limpenhoe Meadows is a 12-hectare (30-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Reedham in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Yarmouth suspension bridge spanned the River Bure at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk from 1829 until its collapse in 1845. The bridge was widened in 1832, which had not been anticipated by the original design. On 2 May 1845, the bridge collapsed under load from a crowd who had gathered to watch a circus stunt on the river. Some 79 people, mainly children, were killed. An investigation found fault with the design and quality of the bridge. A modern-day memorial marks the site of the disaster.

Burgh Common and Muckfleet Marshes is a 121.5-hectare (300-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Fleggburgh in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Hall Farm Fen, Hemsby is a 9.2-hectare (23-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Hemsby in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.

Poplar Farm Meadows, Langley is a 7.5-hectare (19-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Loddon in Norfolk. It is part of the Broadland Ramsar site and Special Protection Area, and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.
