River Road is a residential suburb of Hamilton, sited on the eastern bank of the Waikato River. The namesake road runs from Claudelands Bridge north to Pukete Bridge and beyond, to Ngāruawāhia, but the main part of the suburb is between Boundary Road and Donny Park. Properties close to the river are much more expensive than those further away. Most of River Road was shown on an 1865 map, though it was some years later before it was built and, by 1866, only one bridge had been built.

Contact FM is a student radio station in Hamilton, New Zealand. It operates from the University of Waikato in Hamilton. It broadcasts on the 88.1 MHz FM frequency, having previously broadcast on 106 MHz, 89.0 MHz and 1440 kHz. The original Contact FM, owned by the Waikato Students Union, was broadcast on 89.0 MHz from 1985 to 1998. During a period of voluntary student unionism, the WSU subleased the frequency to private ownership, along with selling Contact FM's equipment. Specialist shows have included the Prognosis Show, a progressive rock show hosted by Richard Stockwell on Saturday nights from 1996 to 1997. The show also included space music, krautrock, psychedelic music, electronic music and experimental Music.

The State Theatre opened in 1932 on the corner of Victoria and London Streets in Hamilton, New Zealand. The movie theater remained in operation under that name until 1964 when, after a 10½-week renovation, it reopened as the Carlton Theatre and operated under that name until the early 1990s. After the Village Five cinemas opened in the Centre Place shopping mall in 1992, the State (along with many Hamilton theatres) closed. The building was used by the Fountain City Christian Church for several years thereafter.

The event spans five days during autumn and attracts both local and overseas balloonists.
