The Hocking Canal, in southeastern Ohio, was a small 19th century lateral/feeder canal of the Ohio-Erie Canal. It began in Carroll, Ohio (which was on the Ohio-Erie Canal) and ran to Athens, Ohio. It paralleled the Hocking River in most places, but also used the river where it was calm and navigable. The portions where the canal route ran in the Hocking River itself were called "slackwater" sections.

The Karshner Mound is a Native American mound in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. Located near the village of Laurelville in Hocking County, it is one of Ohio's largest remaining burial mounds that has not been significantly damaged since white settlement. Measuring 100 feet (30 m) in diameter and 28 feet (8.5 m) high, it lies in the middle of a farm field, but it has never been cultivated, and vegetation on the mound has prevented erosion.

Hocking Correctional Facility was an Ohio state prison located in Ward Township, Hocking County, just north of Nelsonville, Ohio. The facility was originally built in 1952 as a sanatorium and later a children's center. It was converted into prison in 1982. The prison employed a staff of 110. This prison was used primarily to incarcerate the state's aging prison population. The prison's operating budget for 2007 was $13,867,468; and the daily cost per inmate was $80.94. The prison, as of April 2007, housed 481 inmates. Of those: 111 were African American, 363 were Caucasian, and 7 were Latino. In 2018, the prison housed 430 inmates.

The Hocking Hills is a deeply dissected area of the Allegheny Plateau in Appalachian Ohio, primarily in Hocking County, that features cliffs, gorges, rock shelters, and waterfalls. The relatively extreme topography in this area is due to the Blackhand Sandstone (so named because of Native American graphics on the formation near Newark, Ohio), a particular formation that is thick, hard and weather-resistant, and so forms high cliffs and narrow, deep gorges.
