Appalachian Ohio is a bioregion and political unit in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio, characterized by the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and the Appalachian Plateau. The Appalachian Regional Commission defines the region as consisting of thirty-two counties. This region roughly overlaps with the Appalachian mixed-mesophytic forests, which begin in southeast Ohio and southwest Pennsylvania and continue south to Georgia and Alabama. The mixed-mesophytic forest is found only in Central and Southern Appalachia and eastern/central China. It is one of the most biodiverse temperate forests in the world.
The Trimble Community Forest or Trimble Township Community Forest is a 1,200-acre (4.9 km2) forest preserve owned by the Appalachia Ohio Alliance, a land trust located in southeast Ohio. Formerly called Taylor Ridge, it was purchased in 2006 from the Sunday Creek Coal Company, and was formerly part of the Sunday Creek State Wildlife Area. The land has a long history of coal, oil, natural gas, and timber production. The AOA negotiated with the Trimble Township Trustees on its use before purchase. It is located in Athens County, Ohio, south of Ohio State Route 78, between Glouster, Ohio and Murray City, Ohio.

The Strouds Ridge Preserve is a project of Athens, Ohio, to create a greenbelt buffer and trail system on the outskirts of the city. This effort began in 2002, and has so far involved five parcels of land, for a total of 333-acre (135-hectare), in three discontinuous tracts. All these properties, which include the pre-existing 22-acre (89,000 m2) Sells Park, are contiguous with Strouds Run State Park.

Strouds Run State Park is a public recreation area abutting the city of Athens in Athens County, Ohio, in the United States. Grover Center was originally built to be the home for the Ohio Bobcats men's basketball team. The first men's basketball game in the arena featured the Ohio Bobcats hosting the previous years national champion Ohio State Buckeyes on December 1, 1960 to a sold out crowd. The Nelsonville Cross (also called the Elizabeth Schwartz Memorial Cross) in Nelsonville, Ohio, is the world’s only large metal cross monument ever dedicated to a woman. Sixty-five feet tall, 4 1/2 ft. thick, and with arms stretching 25 ft., the illuminated cross represents a man’s dedication to his lost love and his faith.
Fox Lake Wildlife Area is a 421-acre (170 ha) Ohio state wildlife area in southeastern Waterloo Township in Athens County, Ohio. It is centered on 48-acre (19 ha) Fox Lake, which is generally oriented east–west, and which is located on Margaret Creek, a tributary of the Hocking River. The lake was impounded originally for flood control.
The Wolf Plains Group is a Late Adena culture group of 30 earthworks including 22 conical mounds and nine circular enclosures. The Plains, originally known as Wolf's Plains, located a few miles to the northwest of Athens, is a relatively flat terrace in an area of hilly terrain in southeastern Ohio's Hocking River valley. The terrace was formed by glacial outwash coming down the Hocking River, which became dammed at The Plains and found a new outlet to the northeast, leaving the terrace in place.

The Mount Zion Baptist Church is a Baptist church in Athens, Ohio, which was frequently used as a meeting place for the Black community from its inception in 1905 until the 1990s. The Athens County Infirmary is a registered historic district near Chauncey, Ohio, listed in the National Register on 2003-05-01. It contains five contributing buildings. The property is commonly known locally as the County Farm or the County Home. It currently houses the county's recycling center, dog shelter, and offices of Job & Family Services. There is also an historic cemetery on the property. Federal Creek is one of several major tributaries to the Hocking River in southeast Ohio. It drains an area in north-central Athens County, Ohio, as well as an adjacent area in Morgan County, Ohio. This creek is well known for severe flooding. The incorporated village of Amesville, Ohio is located on the creek, while the unincorporated communities of Kilvert, Broadwell, Sharpsburg, and Lathrop are situated on the creek or its tributaries. The Millfield Mine disaster occurred November 5, 1930, at the Sunday Creek Coal Company Poston Mine Number 6 in Dover Township, Athens County, Ohio. It was the state's worst mine disaster, killing 82 men. Sigmund Kozma was the last remaining survivor of the disaster, dying on January 3, 2009.

Leading Creek is a tributary of the Ohio River, 29.5 miles (47.5 km) long, in southeastern Ohio in the United States. Lake Snowden is a 675 acres (273 ha) education and recreation park in southeast Ohio, United States. It is 6 miles southwest of Athens and 1 mile northeast of Albany. Lake Snowden is the largest of four lakes which form the Margaret Creek Conservancy District, covering about 136 acres (55 ha) with a maximum lake depth of 42 feet (13 m). The lake provides flood control, water supply, recreational activities, festivals and natural wildlife.

The College Green of Ohio University is the university's centralized wooded lawn which saw the first academic buildings in the former Northwest Territory. The yard sits roughly aligned to cardinal directions, with Manasseh Cutler Hall facing true north. The Green, at the heart of the Athens campus, is surrounded by administrative, academic, and library buildings named for pivotal leaders in university history: Manasseh Cutler, Robert Wilson, William McGuffey, and Vernon Alden to name a few. The most prominent three structures which adorn College Green, all over 200 years old and made of red brick, are featured on the official university logo and set the university's Federal appearance: Cutler Hall, originally constructed in 1816 as the College Edifice but not officially open until 1819 due to a fire, is the home of the President's office; Wilson Hall built 1837 houses the College of Arts & Sciences; and McGuffey Hall was built 1839. For most of the nineteenth and twentieth century, College Green saw small memorials and wartime monuments dedicated in remembrance of the people involved in those centuries' great conflicts. The Green is the centerpiece of a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, encompassing the collegiate yard, flanking buildings, and other nearby campus buildings.

Manasseh Cutler Hall (also referred to simply as Cutler Hall, or Cutler) on the College Green of Ohio University is the oldest academic building at Ohio University and the oldest in the original Northwest Territory of the United States. It is located at the center of the Ohio University campus in Athens, Ohio. A National Historic Landmark, it continues to house school offices. Marie J. Desonier State Nature Preserve is located in eastern Athens County, Ohio, United States. It is heavily forested, on Jordan Run near its headwaters, in Deep Hollow. The preserve features a loop trail, the Oak Ridge Trail, with two footbridges. This trail can be hiked in a two-mile (3.2 km), or as a 2.5-mile (4.0 km) loop. There are no other developed facilities there except for a small parking area. The preserve represents a good example of the local forest, with relatively few invasive species.

The Athens-Belpre Rail-Trail is a new trailway now being developed in southeast Ohio. It will link Athens, Ohio, in Athens County, with Belpre, Ohio, in Washington County. It will link on the west with the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. There are hopes of eventually connecting with the North Bend Rail Trail in West Virginia. It will largely use the former B&O Railroad line from Belpre to Athens, which began as the B&O Short Line, and which became part of the B&O main line to St. Louis, Missouri.

The Athens Lunatic Asylum, now a mixed-use development known as The Ridges, was a Kirkbride Plan mental hospital operated in Athens, Ohio, from 1874 until 1993. During its operation, the hospital provided services to a variety of patients including Civil War veterans, children, and those declared mentally unwell. After a period of disuse the property was redeveloped by the state of Ohio. The Athens Skate Park is, as the name states, a skatepark located in Athens, Ohio, behind the Athens Recreational Center (known simply as "The Rec Center" to locals.) The park was at one time the only skatepark in the world to feature a capsule (a full pipe connected to a cradle). The Ohio Softball Field (the "OSF") is the softball field of the Ohio Bobcats. It has been home to Ohio Bobcats softball since it was opened on April 2, 1999. On that day, Ohio swept a doubleheader (6–5, 6–4) from Miami University in front of a crowd of 436 fans. Ohio won its first seven games at the facility before suffering a 9–2 loss to Kent State University on April 9. The OSF all-time attendance record was set on April 10, 2011, as Ohio downed the Akron Zips before a standing-room only crowd of 573. Ohio ended its 2018 season with a 11–0 record which granted its way to the Tournament Championship and in a MAC Regular Season.

King's Station, also known as King's Switch or King Hollow, is a Ghost town in Waterloo Township, Athens County, Ohio, in the United States.
The Dew House (also known historically as the Ohio House and the Hotel Dew) is a three-story brick hotel building located on the Public Square in Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio. Constructed originally in 1839 and expanded significantly in 1878, the building played a central role in the economic, social, and political history of Nelsonville during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
