Sierra National Forest

The San Joaquin River ( SAN whah-KEEN; Spanish: Río San Joaquín [ˈri.o saŋ xoaˈkin]) is the longest river of Central California. The 366-mile (589 km) long river starts in the high Sierra Nevada and flows through the rich agricultural region of the northern San Joaquin Valley before reaching Suisun Bay, San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. An important source of irrigation water as well as a wildlife corridor, the San Joaquin is among the most heavily dammed and diverted of California's rivers.

Foerster Peak is a mountain, broadly east of the Half Dome area of Yosemite National Park. Foerster Peak is far, from any road, by over 10 miles (16 km).

The Balls are a mountain range within the Sierra Nevada, in Madera County, California. They are "glacier-carved granite domes" and have been described as "looking like smooth scoops of butterscotch ice cream". The mountain range has federal protection as part of the Sierra National Forest.

Triple Divide Peak is a mountain on the boundary between Yosemite National Park and the Ansel Adams Wilderness in Madera County, California. It is located 0.7 miles (1.1 km) north of Walton Lake and 1.3 miles (2.1 km) southeast of Merced Peak. Its name refers to the fact that it lies on the boundaries of three distinct watersheds, namely those of the Merced, South Fork Merced, and San Joaquin rivers.

The Ferguson Fire was a major wildfire in the Sierra National Forest, Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park in California in the United States. The fire was reported on July 13, 2018, burning 96,901 acres (392 km²), before it was 100% contained on August 19, 2018. Interior areas of the fire continued to smolder and burn until September 19, 2018, when InciWeb declared the fire to be inactive. The Ferguson Fire was caused by the superheated fragments of a faulty vehicle catalytic converter igniting vegetation. The fire, which burned mostly in inaccessible wildland areas of the national forest, impacted recreational activities in the area, including in Yosemite National Park, where Yosemite Valley and Wawona were closed. The Ferguson Fire caused at least $171.2 million (2018 USD) in damages, with a suppression cost of $118.5 million and economic losses measuring $52.7 million. Two firefighters were killed and nineteen others were injured in the fire.

The Mariposa War (December 1850 – June 1851), also known as the Yosemite Indian War, was a conflict between the United States and the indigenous people of California's Sierra Nevada in the 1850s. The war was fought primarily in Mariposa County and surrounding areas, and was sparked by the discovery of gold in the region. As a result of the military expedition, the Mariposa Battalion became the first non-indigenous group to enter Yosemite Valley and the Nelder Grove.

The Ferguson landslide, also commonly called the Ferguson Slide, is an active landslide in the Merced River canyon in Mariposa County, California, United States. In 2006, rocks and debris slid off Ferguson Ridge, blocking California State Route 140, a primary access road to Yosemite National Park. The slide still blocked the original road as of June 2024, although temporary bridges allow one-way traffic around the slide and into the park. The slide is a natural phenomenon, and resulted from the erosion dynamics of the river valley.

The Oak Fire was a destructive wildfire in Mariposa County and the Sierra National Forest in Central California during the 2022 California wildfire season. The fire was reported on July 22, 2022, and burned 19,244 acres (7,788 ha) before being fully contained on September 2, 2022. On June 16, 2023, a 71-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson for starting the fire.

Savage Trading Post is California Historical Landmark No. 527 in El Portal, California on California State Route 140 in Mariposa County. James D. Savage was 49er California Gold Rush miner and trader, in 1849 he built a Log cabin. In the Log cabin, he started a general store and trading post along the Merced River. After just one year the Mariposa War started. In the spring of 1850 James (Jim) Savage started trading at Mariposa Creek in the San Joaquin Valley and he had employees run his Trading Post. In December 1850 the war came to Savage Trading Post and it was set on fire. James Savage was the leader of the California Militia's Mariposa Battalion that traveled to the Yosemite Valley in 1851 to hunt down the Ahwaneechees and their leader Chief Tenaya. The Mariposa Battalion won the battle and thus ended the war. The Mariposa Battalion also became the first non-Native American to see the beauty of Yosemite Valley. Lafayette Bunnell wrote about his visit to the Yosemite Valley. A copy of Savage Trading Post was built at the site of the original and is California Historical Landmark No. 527.

Mono Hot Springs (formerly Lower Hot Springs and Lower Mineral Hot Springs) is a summer resort and campground at a group of hot springs in Fresno County, central California. It is located within the Sierra National Forest, 70 miles (110 km) northeast of Fresno via California State Route 168.

The Kaiser Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness protected area located 70 miles (110 km) northeast of Fresno in the state of California, USA. It was added to the National Wilderness Preservation System by the United States Congress on October 19, 1976. The wilderness is 22,700 acres (92 km²) in size, is one of five wilderness areas within the Sierra National Forest and is managed by the US Forest Service.

Calvin Crest or Calvin Crest Conferences is a private Christian campsite near Oakhurst, California, US. Calvin Crest was established by the San Joaquin Presbytery of California in 1954.

KLLE (107.9 FM) is a commercial radio station licensed to North Fork, California, and broadcasting in the Fresno metropolitan area. It is known as "La Picosa" (The Spicy One) and is owned by the Latino Media Network, airing a Regional Mexican radio format. It carries Los Angeles Dodgers games in Spanish during the baseball season. It airs a syndicated morning show, "Al Aire Con El Terrible" from KLAX-FM Los Angeles.

Wishon is a former settlement in Madera County, California. It has been inundated by Bass Lake.

KAAT (103.1 MHz) is an FM radio station broadcasting a Regional Mexican format. The station is licensed to Oakhurst, California and serves the Fresno area. KAAT also has an FM booster in Merced, California, with the call sign KAAT-FM1. The station is currently owned by Lazer Media.

Ducey's Bass Lake Lodge, originally Freeman’s Bass Lake Lodge, is a historic establishment on the northern shore of Bass Lake. Built by Buddy Freeman in 1941, the lodge initially featured a bar, restaurant, and rental cabins. It changed ownership several times before becoming part of The Pines Resort in 1975.

The Washburn Fire was a wildfire that burned in Yosemite National Park near the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias. The fire was reported on July 7, 2022, in the lower Mariposa Grove area near the Washburn trail, for which the fire is named. The fire quickly attracted national attention due in part to the role the Mariposa Grove played in the establishment of Yosemite National Park and the National Park Service.

Nelder is a giant sequoia located within the Nelder Grove of Sequoia National Forest in California. It is the largest tree in Nelder Grove, the 23rd largest giant sequoia in the world, and could be considered the 22nd largest depending on how badly Ishi Giant atrophied during the Rough Fire in 2015.

The Forks Resort is a family-owned vacation facility nestled on Bass Lake within the Sierra National Forest, 14 miles from Yosemite National Park's southern entrance and 8 miles from the Golden Chain Highway's southern end. Operating under a U.S. Forest Service special use permit, it has been managed by the same family for four generations. The resort's signature Forks Burger was highlighted by food critic Helen Rosner in The New Yorker as one of the best things she's eaten in the past decade.

The Railroad Fire was a wildfire that burned in between the communities of Sugar Pine and Fish Camp in the Sierra National Forest in California, United States. The fire was reported on August 29, 2017 and burned 12,407 acres (50 km²) before it was fully contained on October 24. It occurred during the historic 2011–2017 California drought. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad (YMSPRR) is a historic 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge railway with two operating steam locomotives located near Fish Camp, California, in the Sierra National Forest near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park. Rudy Stauffer organized the YMSPRR in 1961, utilizing historic railroad track, rolling stock and locomotives to construct a tourist line along the historic route of the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company.

Camp Kern is a Boy Scouts of America summer camp owned and operated by the Southern Sierra Council. Camp Kern is located along the south eastern shore of Huntington Lake in the Sierra National Forest in Fresno County, California.

The 2020 Creek Fire was a very large wildfire in central California's Sierra National Forest, in Fresno and Madera counties. One of the most significant fires of California's record-setting 2020 wildfire season, it began on September 4, 2020, and burned 379,895 acres (153,738 ha) over several months until it was declared 100% contained on December 24, 2020. The Creek Fire is the sixth-largest wildfire in recorded California history and the third-largest single fire—i.e. not part of a larger wildfire complex—following the 2021 Dixie Fire.

The Big Sandy Rancheria of Mono Indians of California is a ranchería and federally recognized tribe of Western Mono Indians (Monache) located in Fresno County, California, United States. As of the 2010 Census the population was 118. In 1909, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) bought 280 acres (110 ha) of land for the Big Sandy Band of Western Mono Indians.

KLBN is a commercial radio station located in Fresno, California, broadcasting on 101.9 FM. KLBN airs a regional Mexican music format branded as "La Buena". Its studios are located just north of downtown Fresno, and the transmitter tower is in Meadow Lakes in the Sierra National Forest.

The Mission Fire was a wildfire located two miles east of North Fork in the Sierra National Forest in California in the United States. The fire was reported on September 3, 2017. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire burned 1,035 acres (4 km²) and destroyed 4 buildings. The fire was 100% contained on September 13, 2017. The fire threatened homes in the neighborhoods of Cascadel Woods and Benedict Meadow, the community of North Folk, the Northfork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California, and the Sierra National Forest. It was one of three fires burning in the vicinity of the Sierra National Forest and Yosemite National Park.

The Mono Wind Casino is a small casino located near Auberry, California.

Shaver is a former settlement in Fresno County, California. It was located at the north end of Shaver Lake, where a post office operated from 1896 to 1925. The site is now under the waters of Shaver Lake.

The Rough Fire was a major wildfire in Fresno County, California, and the largest of the 2015 California wildfire season. The fire was ignited by a lightning strike on July 31 and burned 151,623 acres (61,360 ha), largely in the Sierra National Forest and the Sequoia National Forest, before it was declared contained on November 6, 2015. At the time it occurred, the fire was the thirteenth largest in recorded California history.

The South Fork Kings River is a 44.1-mile (71.0 km) tributary of the Kings River in the Sierra Nevada of Fresno County, California. The river forms part of Kings Canyon, the namesake of Kings Canyon National Park and one of the deepest canyons in North America with a maximum relief of 8,200 feet (2,500 m) from rim to river.

The Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin (EDSJ) is a diocese of the Episcopal Church (TEC), located in central California with its headquarters in Fresno. It can trace its roots back to the earliest days of American settlement in California.

McKinley Grove is a small, isolated giant sequoia grove located about 12 km (7.5 mi) southeast of Dinkey Creek in the Kings River watershed of Sierra National Forest, California. The grove occupies a small bowl-shaped depression at an elevation of 1,925 m (6,316 ft).

The Teakettle Experimental Forest is a part of the Sierra National Forest that is set aside for research into forest ecology. The forest is located 80 kilometres (50 mi) east of Fresno, California, between Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks. The area is old-growth forest at 2,000 to 2,800 metres (6,600 to 9,200 ft) elevation and consists primarily of mixed-conifer and red fir forest common on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada.

Big Creek is a 19.3-mile-long (31.1 km) tributary of the San Joaquin River in the Sierra Nevada, within the Sierra National Forest, central California.

The Middle Fork Kings River is a 37.2-mile (59.9 km) tributary of the Kings River in Kings Canyon National Park, California, in the southern Sierra Nevada. Draining 318 square miles (820 km²) – almost all of it wilderness – the Middle Fork is one of the largest wholly undeveloped watersheds in the state, with no dams or paved roads within its basin. The entire length of the Middle Fork is designated a National Wild and Scenic River.

The South Fork San Joaquin River is the largest headwater of the San Joaquin River in central California, United States. About 48 miles (77 km) long, it drains an area of the high Sierra Nevada about 60 miles (97 km) northeast of Fresno.
