Baku is 28 metres (92 ft) below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world and also the largest city in the world below sea level. Baku lies on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, on the Bay of Baku. Baku's urban population was estimated at two million people as of 2009. Baku is the primate city of Azerbaijan—it is the sole metropolis in the country, and about 25% of all inhabitants of the country live in Baku's metropolitan area.

The Palace of the Shirvanshahs (Azerbaijani: Şirvanşahlar Sarayı, Persian: کاخ شروانشاهان) is a 15th-century palace built by the Shirvanshahs and described by UNESCO as "one of the pearls of Azerbaijan's architecture". It is located in the Inner City of Baku, Azerbaijan and, together with the Maiden Tower, forms an ensemble of historic monuments inscribed under the UNESCO World Heritage List of Historical Monuments. The complex contains the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the shah's mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi's mausoleum (the so-called "mausoleum of the dervish"), south of the palace, a portal in the east, Murad's gate, a reservoir and the remnants of a bath house. Earlier, there was an ancient mosque, next to the mausoleum. There are still ruins of the bath to the west of the tomb.

It is the busiest airport both in Azerbaijan and in the South Caucasus as well as one of the busiest in the post-Soviet countries. Formerly, it was called Bina International Airport, named after a suburb of Bina located within the metropolitan area of the capital city. The airport is 20 kilometers northeast of Baku, connected to the city by Baku Airport Highway. It serves as the hub for national carrier Azerbaijan Airlines as well as for Azal Avia Cargo and Silk Way West Airlines.
The Khazar raion or Khazar rayon (Azerbaijani: Xəzər rayonu) is one of the 12 rayonlar in Baku, Azerbaijan. It has a population of 204,736. Khazar rayon is a part of the Baku Metropolitan Area which makes up a majority of the Absheron Peninsula, with a total population of 3,675,000 people. The district is home to the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, busiest airport in the Caucasus, and one of the busiest airports in post-Soviet countries and West Asia. It is one of Azerbaijan's most distinctive national emblems, and is thus featured on Azerbaijani currency notes and official letterheads.

Mardakan (Azerbaijani: Mərdəkan, pronounced [mæɾdæˈkɑn]) is a settlement and municipality in Khazar Rayon of Baku, Azerbaijan, located on the coast of the Caspian Sea, with a population of 32,084. It's positioned on the eastern Absheron Peninsula, about 30 km away from downtown Baku, and just 10 km from Heydar Aliyev International Airport, bounded by Shuvalan to the east, Qala to the south, and Shagan to the west. It also borders Bina in the south-west, and Buzovna to the north-west. Mardakan is the third largest settlement in Khazar Rayon by population, and one of the most populated municipalities in the country. It is considered to be the center of the Khazar Rayon, with the district's office being located in the settlement.

Neft Daşları (pronounced [ˈneft dɑʃlɑˈɾɯ] lit. 'Oil Rocks') is an industrial settlement in Baku, Azerbaijan. The settlement forms part of the municipality of Çilov-Neft Daşları in the Pirallahy raion. It lies 86 km (53 mi) away from the Azerbaijani capital Baku, and 39 km (24 mi) from the nearest mainland shore in the Caspian Sea. A full town on the sea, it was the first oil platform in Azerbaijan, and the first operating offshore oil platform in the world, incorporating numerous drilling platforms. It is featured in Guinness World Records as the world's first offshore oil platform.

Neftchilar (Azerbaijani: Neftçilər) is a subway station in Baku Metro. It was opened on 6 November 1972. The station was opened on November 6, 1972, in one line with the neighboring stations "Koroğlu" - "Kara Karayev". It is located in the settlement "8th kilometer". The walls of the station are decorated with multi-colored mosaic panels depicting the work of oil workers. The author of these mosaic panels was Arif Agamalov. In the middle of the hall there is a double row of silver, corrugated columns. On the ceiling, cut into cells, there are fluorescent lamps that give a soft, even light. The floor of the station is covered with multi-colored patterned granite and matches well with the wall panels and the elegance of the columns.

Lokbatan is a settlement and municipality in Baku, Azerbaijan. It has a population of 41.365 The municipality consists of the settlements of Lokbatan, Shubany, and Heybat. It is the location of a large mud volcano, and a historic oilfield. One of the first moving pictures filmed in Azerbaijan was of an oil well blowout in the 1930s. The mud volcano produced spectacular flames of natural gas in October 2001.

It contains the Old City of Baku and the Baku Boulevard, as well as the settlements Badamdar and Bibiheybət, the administrative territorial divisions no. 1 and no. 2, the municipalities of Badamdar, Bibiheybət and Sabail, and is bordered by the raions of Nasimi, Yasamal and Garadagh. UNEC was founded in 1930, and it is one of the biggest educational institutions of the South Caucasus. Azerbaijan National Museum of Art (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Milli İncəsənət Muzeyi) is the biggest art museum of Azerbaijan. It was founded in 1936 in Baku and in 1943 was named after Rustam Mustafayev, a prominent Azerbaijani scenic designer and theater artist. The museum consists of two 19th century buildings standing next to each other. The museum's total collection includes over 15,000 artworks. There are over 3,000 items in 60 rooms on permanent display. About 12,000 items are kept in storage. The museum changes the exhibits periodically so that more of these artworks can be displayed temporarily.

Mirza Alakbar Sabir Garden (or simply Sabir's Garden) is one of the gardens located in the Sabail district of Baku. The garden named after the famous Azerbaijani satirical poet Mirza Alakbar Sabir. It is bordered by the fortress wall of the Icheri Sheher in the south, Istiglaliyyat Street in the north, the Constitutional Court in the east, and the Institute of Manuscripts in the west which known as the Ismailiyya. The statue of Mirza Alakbar Sabir has been erected in the garden.

On June 13, 2000, the third President of Azerbaijan--then Heydar Aliyev--issued a special order for the establishment of the National Conservatory of Azerbaijan (NCA) located in Baku, the capital of country. In accordance with this order, national artist Siyavush Karimi Ashraf was elected to the position of Rector of the Conservatory. The following year, Baku Music College and Republic Art Gymnasium were added to further expand the institution. The former and current professors of the conservatory hold expertise in various diverse backgrounds including conducting, composition, and singing. Many are professional musicians or prominent social public figures.

Men's Gymnasium Building was built in 1911–1913 in Baku, Azerbaijan for the Men's Gymnasium named after Emperor Alexander III. The architect of the building was Konstantin Borisoglebsky. The building was once the second largest educational institution after the Baku Real School. After the Soviet occupation, the building functioned as the city hospital No. 4. In 2018, the building was removed from the control of the Ministry of Health due to the relocation of City Hospital No. 4. It is currently unused.
