The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC during the first Persian invasion of Greece. It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. The battle was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece. The Greek army inflicted a crushing defeat on the more numerous Persians, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars.

The Bafi Refuge (also spelt Mpafi) belongs to the Greek Mountaineering Club, E.O.S. Athens founded in 1928 in the Mount Parnitha National Park, at an altitude of 1160m, roughly 2.5 km from Mont Parness, inside the national park. Ιn April 1937 the refuge's foundation stone was laid. The first part was completed in Autumn of 1939 with money that was collected mainly by the members of the Mountaineering Club, but also other affiliated associations. Paths begin from the shelter leaving in all directions, which can offer small and easy walks of half and one hour or long and difficult walks for the fitter.
The Vari Cave, also known as the Nympholyptos Cave (Greek: Σπήλαιο Νυμφολήπτου Βάρης), is a small cave northeast of Vari in Attica, Greece. In classical antiquity the cave was used as a shrine dedicated to Apollo, Pan and the Nymphs. The cave was occupied from the sixth to second century BC. The cave then fell into disuse until it was occupied again in the fourth century AD. It was finally abandoned in approximately the sixth century. The cave was excavated in 1901.

Kotroni Airport (ICAO: LGKN) is a small airport situated northwest of Marathonas, Greece. It has one of the smallest runways in the world. Both runways are mostly used by helicopters because Kotroni is normally a base for the Hellenic Navy Helicopter Command. To indicate that helicopters land at the site, the airport has helipad signs on the surface of the runways. It also contains 4 helipads, which are on the runway and 16 helicopters' parking positions.

The Marathon Dam is a gravity dam on the Charadros River, near its junction with the Varnavas Stream, 8 km (5 mi) west of Marathon and 45 km (28 mi) northeast of Athens in Greece. The dam created Lake Marathon for the primary purpose of municipal water supply. Constructed between 1926 and 1929, it was the sole supplier of water to Athens until 1959. The dam is often cited for its role in the modernization of Greece and the first recorded case of seismic activity associated with reservoir inundation. It was also designed to be symbolic of Ancient Greece, particularly Athenians and the Battle of Marathon.

The Temple of Poseidon is an ancient Greek temple on Cape Sounion, Greece, dedicated to the god Poseidon. There is evidence of the establishment of sanctuaries on the cape from as early as the 11th century BC. Sounion's most prominent temples, the Temple of Athena and the Temple of Poseidon, are however not believed to have been built until about 700 BC, and their kouroi (freestanding Greek statues of young men) date from about one hundred years later. The material and size of the offerings at the Temple of Poseidon indicate that it was likely frequented by members of the elite and the aristocratic class.
The Theatre of Thorikos (Greek: Αρχαίο Θέατρο Θορικού), situated north of Lavrio, was an ancient Greek theater in the demos of Thorikos in Attica, Greece. It holds the distinction of being the world's oldest known theater, dating back to its construction around 525–480 BC. The theater is unusual in its design, as it is elongated instead of the typical semicircle.

Το Κάτω Σούλι είναι χωριό της Ανατολικής Αττικής που βρίσκεται στον κάμπο του Μαραθώνα, κοντά στην παραλία του Σχινιά. Πιστεύεται οτι η ονομασία προέρχεται από την Τουρκική λέξη Su=νερό =>Sulu=υδατώδης, εξαιτίας του έλους που παρεμβάλλεται μεταξύ του οικισμού και της θάλασσας. Ο πληθυσμός του είναι 1.477 κάτοικοι σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2001. Η αρχαία ονομασία, ήταν Τρικόρυνθος ή Τρικόρυθος και τοποθετείται βορειότερα του σημερινού οικισμού, στην κορυφή του οποίου σώζονται λείψανα της αρχαίας ακρόπολης του Δήμου.
Το Διονυσοβούνι είναι μικρό βουνό της Αττικής που βρίσκεται βόρεια της Πεντέλης με την οποία συνδέεται. Έχει υψόμετρο 651 μέτρα. Βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στους οικισμούς Διόνυσος, Ροδόπολη και Σταμάτα. Το Διονυσοβούνι καλυπτόταν από πυκνό πευκοδάσος μέχρι την καταστροφική πυρκαγιά του 2009, που έκαψε σχεδόν ολοσχερώς το βουνό. Πιο παλιά, την εποχή της Αρχαίας Αθήνας, το βουνό είχε πυκνό δάσος από βελανιδιές, καθώς και καρυδιές, το οποίο αντικαταστάθηκε σιγά-σιγά από την χαλέπιο πεύκη.
Ο Δήμος Διονύσου είναι δήμος της Περιφερειακής ενότητας Βόρειας Αττικής και συστάθηκε με το Πρόγραμμα Καλλικράτης, αποτελούμενος από το Κρυονέρι, την Άνοιξη, τη Δροσιά, τη Σταμάτα, τη Ροδόπολη, το Διόνυσο και τον Άγιο Στέφανο ο οποίος αποτελεί έδρα αυτού. Η έκταση του νέου δήμου είναι 68,66 τ.χλμ. και ο πληθυσμός του ανέρχεται σε 40.193 μόνιμους κατοίκους, σύμφωνα με την Απογραφή του 2011 (από 32.986 κατοίκους που είχε το 2001).

Marathon (Demotic Greek: Μαραθώνας, Marathónas; Attic/Katharevousa: Μαραθών, Marathṓn) is a town in Greece and the site of the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, in which the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians. Legend has it that Pheidippides, a Greek herald at the battle, was sent running from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory, which is how the marathon running race was conceived in modern times. Today it is part of East Attica regional unit, in the outskirts of Athens and a popular resort town and center of agriculture.

Thorikos or Thoricus (Ancient Greek: Θορικός) was a city, and later a deme in the southern portion of ancient Attica, one of the twelve original settlements that were united in the synoikismos attributed to Theseus to form Archaic Athens. It was later a deme of the phyle of Acamantis. Near it are the mines of Laurion, where lead and silver was mined from Neolithic times, and worked in the industrial quarter of the settlement. There is a theatre dating from c. 525–480 BC. The modern site is Lavrio.
Voula (Greek: Βούλα) is a southern suburb of Athens along the Athens coast and former municipality in East Attica, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 8.787 km2.

The Amphiareion of Oropos (Greek: Άμφιάρειο Ωρωπού), situated in the hills 6 km southeast of the fortified port of Oropos, was a sanctuary dedicated in the late 5th century BCE to the hero Amphiaraos, where pilgrims went to seek oracular responses and healing. It became particularly successful during the 4th century BCE, to judge from the intensive building at the site. The hero Amphiaraos was a descendant of the seer Melampos and initially refused to participate in the attack on Thebes (detailed in the Seven Against Thebes of Aeschylus) because he could foresee that it would be a disaster. In some versions of the myth, the earth opens and swallows the chariot of Amphiaraos, transforming him into a chthonic hero. Today the site is found east of the modern town Markopoulo Oropou in the Oropos municipality of Attica, Greece.

In opposition to the War Museum of Athens it displays air force history and is active in restoring and presenting old aircraft. It was the primary water supply for Athens from 1931, when it became operational, until 1959. In 1959 water from Lake Yliki became available, and water from Mornos Reservoir became available in 1981.

The soil is very fertile (something common in the Mediterranean) and many crops are grown on it, most importantly vineyards, olives, figs, pistachios, honey and vegetables. Its population was 30,817 at the 2021 census. The seat of the municipality is in the town of Koropi (pop. 19,164 in 2011). In descending order of population, its other villages are Kítsi (pop. 4,788), Agía Marína (3,765), Karellás (1,579), and Ágios Dimítrios (1,011).

It is situated in the eastern foothills of the Parnitha mountains, 3 km southwest of Polydendri, 5 km southeast of Malakasa and 27 km north of Athens city centre. Afidnes has a station on the railway from Athens to Thessaloniki. The A1 motorway (Athens - Lamia - Thessaloniki) passes east of the town. It is part of Athens metropolitan area.
Nea Makri (Greek: Νέα Μάκρη) is a town in East Attica, Greece. Since the local government reform of 2011, it has been a municipal unit within the municipality of Marathon. The municipal unit has an area of 36.662 km2. It is part of the Athens metropolitan area.

Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Saronikos, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 70.636 km2. The town has historically been an Arvanite settlement.
Steiria (Ancient Greek: Στείρια) was a deme of ancient Attica on the east coast, between Prasiae and Brauron, which belonged to the phyle of Pandionis. Stiris in Phocis is said to have been founded by the inhabitants of this deme. The road from Attica to Steiria and the harbour of Prasiae was called the Στειριακὴ ὁδός. Steiria, located west of Porto Rafti, was the deme of Theramenes and Thrasybulus.

Laurium was famous in Classical antiquity for its silver mines, which was one of the chief sources of revenue of the Athenian state. The metallic silver was mainly used for coinage. The Archaeological Museum of Lavrion shows much of the story of these mines.
Varkiza (Greek: Βάρκιζα), also formerly Alianthos (Αλίανθος), is a town and a suburb of greater Athens forming part of the municipality of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni in southern Attica of the Megalo Daktylo (Large Finger). It lies approximately 2 km south of Vari, 22 km S of Athens city centre, SW of the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport and the Attiki Odos (numbers 6 and 62), NW of Cape Sounio, and south of the Hymettus Ring. Η Αγία Τριάδα (πρώην Ιπποκράτειος Πολιτεία) είναι οικισμός που βρίσκεται στην ανατολική Αττική, στις ανατολικές πλαγιές της Πάρνηθας, αμφιθεατρικά σε υψόμετρο από 500 έως 840 μέτρα και σε μικρή απόσταση από τις Αφίδνες. Διοικητικά ανήκει στον Δήμο Ωρωπού, στον οποίο εντάχθηκε με το πρόγραμμα Καλλικράτης η κοινότητα Αφιδνών. Η Ιπποκρατειος Πολιτεία (Αγία Τριάδα Αφιδνών) είναι εντός σχεδίου οικισμός από το 1977. Προηγουμένως η περιοχή ήταν κληροτεμάχια που άνηκαν σε κατοίκους των Αφιδνών. Ο οικισμός αρχικά ονομάστηκε «Διεθνής Ιπποκράτειος Πολιτεία» από το όνομα του οικοδομικού συνεταιρισμού αλλά στην συνέχεια μετονομάστηκε σε Αγία Τριάδα, από το όνομα μίας μικρής εκκλησίας που προϋπήρχε στην περιοχή.
Ο Δήμος Κερατέας ήταν δήμος της ανατολικής Αττικής ο οποίος λειτούργησε στο διάστημα 1951-2010 οπότε και καταργήθηκε με την εφαρμογή του προγράμματος Καλλικράτης. Βρισκόταν στο νότιο τμήμα της Αττικής και συνόρευε με τον δήμο Λαυρεωτικής, τον δήμο Καλυβίων Θορικού και την κοινότητα Κουβαρά. Καταλάμβανε έκταση 129,5 τ.χλμ. και ο πληθυσμός του σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2001 ήταν 13.246 κάτοικοι. Έδρα του δήμου ήταν η Κερατέα.
Ο Δήμος Μαραθώνος είναι Δήμος της Περιφέρειας Αττικής που συστάθηκε με την εφαρμογή του αυτοδιοικητικού Προγράμματος Καλλικράτης. Ο Δήμος σχηματίστηκε με τη συνένωση των προϋπαρχόντων Δήμων Νέας Μάκρης και Μαραθώνος και των κοινοτήτων Γραμματικού και Βαρνάβα. Η έκταση του νέου Δήμου είναι 226,55 τ.χλμ. και ο πληθυσμός του ανέρχεται σε 33.423 κατοίκους, σύμφωνα με την Απογραφή του 2011. Ως έδρα του ορίστηκε ο Μαραθώνας.
Ο Δήμος Σπάτων-Λούτσας ήταν δήμος της ανατολικής Αττικής ο οποίος λειτούργησε στο διάστημα 1951-2010 οπότε και καταργήθηκε με την εφαρμογή του προγράμματος Καλλικράτης. Βρισκόταν στην περιοχή των Μεσογείων και συνόρευε με τους δήμους Παιανίας, Ραφήνας, Αρτέμιδος, Παλλήνης, Μαρκοπούλου Μεσογαίας και με την κοινότητα Πικερμίου. Αποτελούταν από ένα κοινοτικό διαμέρισμα, καταλάμβανε έκταση 52,4 τ.χλμ. και ο πληθυσμός της σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2001 ήταν 10.783.104 κάτοικοι. Έδρα του δήμου ήταν τα Σπάτα.
Το Εθνικό Πάρκο Σχινιά Μαραθώνα βρίσκεται στην Αττική και στην πεδιάδα του Μαραθώνα, στην ομώνυμη περιοχή. Απέχει από την Αθήνα 40 περίπου χιλιόμετρα ΒΑ και αποτελεί το σημαντικότερο παράκτιο οικοσύστημα της Αττικής, ενώ παρουσιάζει και εξαιρετικό ενδιαφέρον ως τοπίο και βασίζεται σε μια ευαίσθητη υδατική ισορροπία.

Η Αρσίδα (και Ελεούσα ή Ελαιούσα ή Αρτσιδάς ή Αργέντας) είναι νησίδα που βρίσκεται στον Σαρωνικό, πολύ κοντά στις δυτικές ακτές τις νοτιοανατολικής Αττικής. Περιλαμβάνει τους οικισμούς Παιανία, Γλυκά Νερά και Αργιθέα. Καταλαμβάνει συνολική έκταση 47,14 τ.χλμ. και ο πληθυσμός του είναι 28.036 κάτοικοι σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2021.
Pefka (Greek: Πεύκα), also known as Vgethi (Greek: Βγέθι), is a seaside town in East Attica, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Lavreotiki. Its population is 238 (2021). Vgethi is a quiet place only with scattered little houses and a beach which is visited, not only by the residents, but other people from the city and the suburbs too. It is located near Keratea from the North and to the South it is connected with Lavrio. It can be reached from the city through Lavriou Street.

This district is a maritime plain, through which the Asopus flows into the sea, and extends for 5 miles (8.0 km) along the shore. It is separated from the inland plain of Tanagra by some hills, which are a continuation of the principal chain of the Diacrian mountains.

Η μισή και πλέον ακτή έχει μετατραπεί σε πολυτελή πλαζ (πρώην Yabanaki και πρώην Varkiza Resort - πρώην DoIt) με πολλές υπηρεσίες, όπως μεταξύ άλλων, Αθλητικές εγκαταστάσεις, Χώροι στάθμευσης, Χώροι εστίασης, Υγειονομικές εγκαταστάσεις, Κλαμπ, Δοκιμαστήρια, και Ναυταθλητικές εγκαταστάσεις. Το υπόλοιπο, σαφώς μικρότερο σκέλος παραμένει Χωρίς ξαπλώστρες και με ελεύθερη προς επίσκεψη. Η παραλία Βάρκιζας είναι επίσης εξαιρετικά δημοφιλής για θαλάσσιες δραστηριότες όπως ιστιοσανίδα και θαλάσσιο σκι. Την συστήνουμε όταν δεν έχει νοτιά!
Plasi (griechisch Πλάσι = Plateau) ist eine Ausgrabungsstätte in Attika in Griechenland etwa 4 km südöstlich der Stadt Marathon. Die Funde belegen die Anwesenheit von Menschen vom Spätneolithikum bis in frühbyzantinische Zeit, also über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 3000 Jahren. Man vermutet, dass hier die prähistorische Stadt Marathon lag. Die historische Stadt konnte bisher noch nicht lokalisiert werden.
Nemesiksen temppeli eli Nemeseion (m.kreik. Νεμεσεῑον) oli antiikin aikainen Nemesikselle omistettu kreikkalainen temppeli Rhamnuksen kaupungissa Kreikassa. Siihen liittyi pyhäkköalue, jossa oli myös Themikselle omistettu temppeli.
Το ξενοδοχείο Mont Parnes (Μον Παρνές) είναι κτίριο στην Πάρνηθα το οποίο σήμερα στεγάζει το καζίνο Πάρνηθας ή Regency Casino Mont Parnes. Το κτίριο κτίστηκε την περίοδο 1958-1961 σε σχέδια του αρχιτέκτονα Παύλου Μυλωνά ως πολυτελές ξενοδοχείο, το οποίο όμως δεν γνώρισε μεγάλη απήχηση. Το 1971 δόθηκε άδεια λειτουργίας καζίνο στις εγκαταστάσεις του, η πρώτη στην Αττική, και το 1972 κατασκευάστηκε τελεφερίκ το οποίο ανέβαινε στο ξενοδοχείο. Το ξενοδοχείο σταμάτησε να λειτουργεί το 1974. Το 1984 Μον Παρνές πέρασε στην ιδιοκτησία του ΕΟΤ, το οποίο ιδιωτικοποιήθηκε ξανά το 2003. Βρίσκεται στη θέση Μαυροβούνι, σε υψόμετρο 1.078 μέτρων.
Plataiailaisten hautakumpu on antiikin aikainen hautakumpu Marathonin alueella nykyisessä Marathónaksen kunnassa Kreikassa. Se rakennettiin vuonna 490 eaa. Marathonin taistelussa ateenalaisten rinnalla kaatuneiden plataiailaisten haudaksi.
Platadoúra (kreik. Πλαταδούρα) on pieni Kreikan saari, joka kuuluu Verdoúgian saariin ja sijaitsee Eteläisessä Euboianlahdessa Itä-Attikan rannikon ja Euboian saaren välissä. Saaren pinta-ala on noin 0,045 neliökilometriä ja se on asumaton. Hallinnollisesti Platadoúra kuuluu Marathónaksen kuntaan, Itä-Attikan alueyksikköön ja Attikan alueeseen.
Vraóna (kreik. Βραώνα) on pieni Kreikan saari, joka sijaitsee Attikan itärannikolla Porián kylän edustalla. Saaren pinta-ala on noin 0,017 neliökilometriä ja se on asumaton. Hallinnollisesti Vraóna kuuluu Markópoulo Mesogaíaksen kuntaan, Itä-Attikan alueyksikköön ja Attikan alueeseen. Saarella on Pyhälle Aleksandrokselle (Ágios Aléxandros) omistettu kirkko.
Koulourá (kreik. Κουλουρά) on pieni Kreikan saari, joka kuuluu Argo-Saronisiin saariin ja sijaitsee Attikan Saroninlahden puoleisella rannikolla länteen Lagonísin niemestä. Saaren pinta-ala on noin 0,009 neliökilometriä ja se on asumaton. Hallinnollisesti Koulourá kuuluu Saronikóksen kuntaan, Itä-Attikan alueyksikköön ja Attikan alueeseen.
