Florina Regional Unit

Florina (Greek: Φλώρινα, Flórina; known also by some alternative names) is a town and municipality in the mountainous northwestern Macedonia, Greece. Its motto is, 'Where Greece begins'.

Lake Vegoritida (Greek: Λίμνη Βεγορίτιδα, Limni Vegoritida), also known in the past as Lake Ostrovo (Greek: Λίμνη Οστρόβου, Limni Ostrovou), is a large natural lake in western Macedonia, northern Greece. It is situated 6 km northeast of Amyntaio and 18 km west of Edessa, at 540 m elevation. The Voras Mountains lie to the north. It belongs partly to the Florina regional unit and partly to the Pella regional unit.

Small Prespa Lake (Greek: Λίμνη Μικρή Πρέσπα, Limni Mikri Prespa; Albanian: Prespa e Vogël; Macedonian: Мало Преспанско Езеро, Malo Prespansko Ezero) is a lake shared between Greece (138 km² drainage area; 42.5 km² surface area) and Albania (51 km² drainage area; 4.3 km² surface area). It is the smaller of the two Prespa Lakes.

Perasma (Greek: Πέρασμα, before 1926: Κουτσκοβαίνη – Koutskovaini; Bulgarian and Macedonian Slavic: Кучковени, Kučkoveni) is a village and a former municipality in Florina regional unit, West Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Florina, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 211.023 km². It is located in a plain, 6 km southeast of Florina. The population was 3,478 in 2021.

Vevi (Greek: Βεύη, before 1926: Μπάνιτσα – Banitsa; Macedonian and Bulgarian: Баница, Banica or Banitsa) is a village located in the municipal unit of Meliti in Florina regional unit, Macedonia, Greece. The village is passed by two national roads which lead to Thessaloniki, Florina, Amyntaio, and Kozani. Additionally, it has a railway station on the line between Florina and Thessaloniki. Amyntaio (Greek: Αμύνταιο, before 1928: Σόροβιτς – Sorovits; Bulgarian: Суровичево, Сорович), is a town and municipality in the Florina regional unit of Macedonia, Greece. The population of Amyntaio proper is 4,348, while that of the entire municipality is 14,169 (2021). The town is named after the ancient king of Macedon, and father of Philip II and grandfather of Alexander the Great, Amyntas III.

Meliti (Greek: Δήμος Μελίτης) is a former municipality in Florina regional unit, West Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Florina, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 269.477 km². The seat of the municipality was in Neochoraki.

Kajmakčalan (Kaimakchalan), Kaimaki, Kaimaktsalan or Voras (Greek: Καϊμακτσαλάν or Καϊμάκι or Βόρας, Macedonian: Каjмакчалан, romanized: Kajmakčalan), is a mountain on the border between Greece and North Macedonia. It is the southernmost and highest peak, 2,521 metres (8,271 ft), of a range known in Greek as the Voras Mountains and in Macedonian as Nidže. In terms of prominence, the Kaimaktsalan summit rises 1,758 metres above its surroundings. The frontier between the two countries runs across the summit. It is the third-highest peak in Greece after Mytikas and Smolikas and the fifth-highest in North Macedonia.

Prespes (Greek: Πρέσπες) is a municipality in the Florina regional unit, Western Macedonia, Greece. Its population in 2021 was 1,211. The seat of the municipality is in Laimos. It was named after Lake Prespa, in the western part of the municipality.

Amyntaio Power Station (Greek: ΑΗΣ Αμυνταίου) is a 600 MW coal-fired power station near Amyntaio in Western Macedonia, Greece. Build and commissioned in the mid 1980s, the power station is fuelled by lignite from the adjacent Amyntaio coal mine.

Verno (Greek: Βέρνο) or Vitsi (Greek: Βίτσι) is a forested mountain range in the southern part of the Florina and the northeastern part of the Kastoria regional units in Western Macedonia, northern Greece. The elevation of its highest peak, Verno, is 2,128 m (6,982 ft). It stretches from the village Trivouno in the northwest to Kleisoura in the southeast, over a length of about 30 km (19 mi). The nearest mountains are the Askio to the southeast, the Baba to the north and the northern Pindus to the southwest. It is drained towards the river Sakoulevas (a tributary of the Crna) to the northeast, and towards the Aliakmonas and Lake Kastoria to the southwest.

Η βασιλική του Αγίου Αχιλλείου είναι ερειπωμένος χριστιανικός ναός του 10ου-11ου αιώνα αιώνα, ο οποίος βρίσκεται στο νησί του Αγίου Αχιλλείου, στη λίμνη Μικρή Πρέσπα. Οικοδομήθηκε στο σημείο όπου βρισκόταν μεγαλύτερος παλαιοχριστιανικός ναός του 6ου αιώνα. Ο ναός λεηλατήθηκε και καταστράφηκε από τους Αλαμανούς περίπου το 1045 και τόσο οι πηγές όσο και η αρχαιολογική έρευνα δείχνουν ότι στη συνέχεια ανακαινίσθηκε από τον δραστήριο επίσκοπο Αχριδών Θεόφραστο που διοργάνωνε εκεί Επισκοπικές και Αρχιερατικές Συνόδους.

Farangi (Greek: Φαράγγι, before 1927: Οκλεμέζ – Oklemez) is a village in Florina Regional Unit, Macedonia, Greece.

Ο δήμος Πρεσπών του προγράμματος Καποδίστριας ήταν δήμος που λειτούργησε την περίοδο 1999-2010. Συστάθηκε με το πρόγραμμα Καποδίστριας από τη συνένωση παλαιότερων κοινοτήτων της περιοχής, που αποτέλεσαν στη συνέχεια τα δημοτικά διαμερίσματα του δήμου. Το 2010 καταργήθηκε και εντάχθηκε στον νέο διευρυμένο δήμο Πρεσπών. Βρισκόταν στα βορειοδυτικά του νομού, στα σύνορα με την Αλβανία και την Πρώην Γιουγκοσλαβική Δημοκρατία της Μακεδονίας. Καταλάμβανε ολόκληρο σχεδόν το τμήμα του εθνικού δρυμού Πρεσπών, ο οποίος ανακηρύχθηκε το 1974. Αποτελούταν από 13 δημοτικά διαμερίσματα, καταλάμβανε έκταση 413,5 τ.χλμ. (αποτελούσε τον μεγαλύτερο δήμο σε έκταση στον νομό) και είχε συνολικό πληθυσμό 1.851 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2001). Έδρα του δήμου ήταν ο Λαιμός.

Ο Δήμος Φλώρινας του προγράμματος Καποδίστριας ήταν δήμος που λειτούργησε την περίοδο 1999-2010. Συστάθηκε με το πρόγραμμα Καποδίστριας από τη συνένωση του παλαιότερου δήμου Φλώρινας και των γειτονικών του παλαιότερων κοινοτήτων, που αποτέλεσαν στη συνέχεια τα δημοτικά διαμερίσματα του δήμου. Το 2010 καταργήθηκε και εντάχθηκε στον νέο διευρυμένο δήμο Φλώρινας. Βρισκόταν στο κεντρικό τμήμα του νομού. Αποτελείτο από 8 δημοτικά διαμερίσματα, καταλάμβανε έκταση 150,6 τ.χλμ. και είχε συνολικό πληθυσμό 16.771 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2001).

The Amyntaio railway station (Greek: Σιδηροδρομικός σταθμός Αμυνταίου, romanized: Sidirodromikós stathmós Amyntaio) is the railway station of Amyntaio in West Macedonia, Greece. The station is located close to the center of the settlement, on the Thessaloniki–Bitola railway, 152.2 kilometres (94.6 mi) from Thessaloniki, and is severed by Local services to Thessaloniki and Florina. It was servered by trains on the Kozani–Amyntaio line; however these have been suspended since 2009.

The station is located 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) west of the centre of the settlement, on the Thessaloniki–Bitola railway, 177 kilometres (110 mi) from Thessaloniki, and is severed by both Local and Thessaloniki Suburban Services.

Florina railway station (Greek: Σιδηροδρομικός σταθμός Φλωρίνης, romanized: Sidirodromikós stathmós Florínis) is a railway station in Florina, a town in Western Macedonia, Greece. It is situated at the Greek terminus of the Thessaloniki–Bitola railway. It was opened in 1929, with the station fully operational by 1931. It is served by local trains to Thessaloniki.

Αποτελούταν από 16 δημοτικά διαμερίσματα, καταλάμβανε έκταση 188,6 τ.χλμ. και είχε συνολικό πληθυσμό 3.963 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2001). Έδρα του δήμου ήταν οι Κάτω Κλεινές.

Kato Kleines (Greek: Κάτω Κλεινές, before 1926: Κάτω Κλέστινα - Kato Klestina; Bulgarian and Macedonian: Долно Клештино, Dolno Kleštino) is a village and a former municipality in Florina regional unit, West Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Florina, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 188.564 km². It is 7 km north of the city of Florina. The population was 2,132 in 2021.

Ο δήμος Περάσματος ήταν δήμος του νομού Φλώρινας που συστάθηκε με το πρόγραμμα Καποδίστριας από τη συνένωση παλαιότερων κοινοτήτων της περιοχής, που αποτέλεσαν στη συνέχεια τα δημοτικά διαμερίσματα του δήμου. Λειτούργησε την περίοδο 1999 -2010 οπότε και καταργήθηκε με την εφαρμογή του προγράμματος Καλλικράτης και εντάχθηκε στον νέο δήμο Φλώρινας. Βρισκόταν στο κενρικό τμήμα του νομού. Αποτελούταν από 13 δημοτικά διαμερίσματα, καταλάμβανε έκταση 211,0 τ.χλμ. και είχε συνολικό πληθυσμό 5.510 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2001). Έδρα του δήμου ήταν το Πέρασμα.

Ο Σιδηροδρομικός Σταθμός Σιταριάς είναι σιδηροδρομικός σταθμός στη Σιταριά του νομού Φλώρινας. Βρίσκεται έξω από τον οικισμό. Εξυπηρετείται από τα τοπικά τρένα προς Θεσσαλονίκη και Φλώρινα.

It is situated on the Thessaloniki–Bitola railway. It was opened in 1894, along with the line. It is served by local trains to Thessaloniki and Florina.

Ο Νομός Φλώρινας είναι ένας από τους 51 νομούς της Ελλάδας, ο οποίος από το 2011 αποτελεί μία από τις 74 περιφερειακές ενότητες της χώρας και μία από τις τέσσερις που συγκροτούν την Περιφέρεια Δυτικής Μακεδονίας. Έχει πληθυσμό 51.414 κατοίκους, κατά την Απογραφή του 2011, αποτελώντας τη δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη πληθυσμιακά Π.Ε. της Περιφέρειας Δυτικής Μακεδονίας μετά την Κοζάνη. Η έκταση της ανέρχεται σε 1.924 τετραγωνικά χιλιόμετρα.

Het Nationaal park Prespa (Εθνικός Δρυμός Πρεσπών; Ethnikós Drymós Prespón) is een nationaal park in het noordwesten van Griekenland. Het is een van de vier nationale parken rond het Prespameer en beslaat het gebied rond het zuidoostelijke, Griekse gedeelte van dit meer, inclusief het Kleine Prespameer. Het maakt sinds 2000 samen met de drie parken in de buurlanden (Nationaal park Prespa in Albanië, Nationaal park Pelister en Nationaal park Galičica in Noord-Macedonië) deel uit van een trilateraal grensoverschrijdend Prespapark.

Η Χειμαδίτιδα είναι λίμνη της Μακεδονίας που βρίσκεται στα νότια της Περιφερειακής Ενότητας Φλώρινας κοντά στα σύνορα με την Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Κοζάνης. Είναι μία από τις λίμνες της υδρολογικής λεκάνης που σχηματίζεται ανάμεσα στα όρη Βέρνο, Βόρας, Άσκιο και Βέρμιο και που περιλαμβάνει ακόμα τις λίμνες Βεγορίτιδα, Πετρών και Ζάζαρη.

Η Ζάζαρη (γνωστή και ως Λίμνη Αγίων Θεοδώρων) είναι μικρή λίμνη που βρίσκεται στα νότια του νομού Φλώρινας, στους πρόποδες του όρους Βέρνο της Μακεδονίας. Είναι μία από τις λίμνες της υδρολογικής λεκάνης που σχηματίζεται ανάμεσα στα όρη Βέρνο, Βόρας, Άσκιο και Βέρμιο και που περιλαμβάνει ακόμα τις λίμνες Βεγορίτιδα, Πετρών και Χειμαδίτιδα.

Nymfaio (Greek: Νυμφαίο, before 1926: Νέβεσκα – Neveska, Aromanian: Nevesca) is a village and a former community in Florina regional unit, Western Macedonia, Greece. After the 2011 local government reform it became a member of the municipality Amyntaio. The municipal unit has an area of 28.209 km². As of 2021 the village had a population of 63 residents. The village is protected by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture in order to preserve its architectural integrity.

Lechovo (Greek: Λέχοβο), renamed as Iroiko (Greek: Ηρωϊκό) between 1955 and 1956, is a village and a former community in Florina regional unit, Western Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Amyntaio, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 22.844 km², and a population of 782 (2021 census). The village is set amongst the mountains of Northern Greece and the main road runs through the town's centre. There is a museum, a football pitch and an indoor handball stadium. Lechovo has stone architecture common to many northern villages, and has an old upper square and church bell tower.

Variko (Greek: Βαρικό, before 1926: Μόκραινα – Mokraina; Bulgarian/Macedonian: Мокрени) is a village and a former community in Florina regional unit, West Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Amyntaio, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 21.877 km². It is 27 km south-southeast of the city of Florina. The village's primary agricultural products are beans, corn, and wheat. There is an annual bean festival on August 15, coinciding with the Dormition of Virgin.

Filotas (Greek: Φιλώτας, before 1927: Τσαλτζιλάρ – Tsaltzilar; Bulgarian: Чалджиево, Chaldzhievo) is a village and a former municipality in Florina regional unit, West Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is a municipal unit of the municipality Amyntaio. The municipal unit has an area of 132.495 km². Population 3,616 (2021).

Ο Άγιος Αχίλλειος είναι νησίδα της Μικρής Πρέσπας και ομώνυμος οικισμός στην Π.Ε. Φλώρινας της Μακεδονίας. Διοικητικά ανήκει στη Δ.Ε. Πρεσπών του Δήμου Πρεσπών στη Δυτική Μακεδονία. Στην τοπική κοινότητα Αγίου Αχιλλείου ανήκει επίσης και ο οικισμός Πύλη. Μέχρι το 1926 η νησίδα και ο οικισμός είχαν την επίσημη ονομασία Αχίλλειον.

Paroreio (pronounced Parori by locals) (Greek: Παρόρειο, before 1926: Μπιτούσα – Bitousa; Bulgarian: Битуша, Macedonian: Битуша, Bituša/Bitusha) is a small village located about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north of Florina, the capital of the regional unit of Florina in northwestern Greece. It is on the ridge of Baba Mountain on the periphery of the Pelagonia plain. Today, Paroreio is inhabited by only a small number of full-time residents. At its peak in the 1930s, the village reached about 600-700 inhabitants, mostly families looking for a piece of fertile land to cultivate and farm in the nearby valley. The residents were employed in agriculture, raising livestock, timber getting and other trades and necessary occupations.

The Archaeological Museum of Florina is a museum in Florina in West Macedonia, Greece.

Drosopigi is on Mount Vitsi, 14 kilometres from Florina, Western Macedonia, Greece. In the 1990s members of Drosopigi Cultural Society ‘I Proodos’ started collecting objects from everyday life, some which people still used and some which had fallen into disuse. The folklore collection was created in 1987 and housed in the old community hall of Drosopigi in the centre of the village.
