Henry County

Hooker Field is a stadium in Martinsville, Virginia. It is primarily used for baseball and is the home of the Martinsville Mustangs of the Coastal Plain League and the Patrick & Henry Community College Patriots. The ballpark has a capacity of 3,200 people. It opened in 1988 and was the home field of the Appalachian League Martinsville Phillies from 1988 through 1998 and the Martinsville Astros from 1999 to 2003.

Bassett High School is a four-year comprehensive public high school in Bassett, Virginia, United States. The school currently enrolls about 1,100 students in grades 9–12. It is one of two public high schools operated by Henry County Schools.

Stoneleigh, the former abode of Governor Thomas B. Stanley, began its construction in 1929 and it was completed in 1932. It was built in the Tudor Revival-style and crafted out of stone from the nearby Smith River. Stanley inhabited this 25-room mansion until his death in 1970, after which his children took ownership. They donated the house to Ferrum College in 1980

Turkeycock Wildlife Management Area is a 2,679-acre (10.84 km²) Wildlife Management Area (WMA) along the ridge of Turkeycock Mountain northeast of Martinsville, Virginia. It straddles the border between Franklin and Henry counties. The area is primarily forest, with several open areas for wildlife located around the property. The lowest elevation is 1,100 feet (340 m) above sea level, while the highest is over 1,700 feet (520 m). A number of small streams drain the land, and a pond is located near its southwestern corner. Most wildlife management in the area has been limited to improving timber quality through the sale of wood.

Beaver Creek Plantation, under the ownership of George Hairston, was a large slave-holding tobacco plantation and the center of an empire in tobacco-growing and slave-trading built by the Hairston family, Scottish emigrants to Pennsylvania in the early 18th century. Located just outside today's Martinsville, Virginia, the plantation thrived in tobacco production and textile manufacturing, as well as producing household goods and raising livestock. At one point the enslaved blacks of Beaver Creek were tending a thousand yam plants; in one day they made 660 candles.

Rock Run School was built as a one-room school house in the late 19th century. Today it is regarded as offering a strong insight into the state of black education in the years between the U.S. Civil War and Brown vs. Board of Education. This Henry County, Virginia school soon added another room, and operated as an educational institution until the mid-1950s, when it was consolidated into a larger segregated school. Similar to most other black schools, Rock Run School was painfully underfunded throughout its history, stunting the development and materials available to the school.

John D. Bassett High School, also known as Bassett Middle School, is a historic school building located at Bassett, Henry County, Virginia. It was built in 1947–1948, and is a two-story Georgian Revival style brick school building. A rear addition was built in 1961. It has three bay portico entrances at each end with cupolas above. They provide public access to the two community spaces on the interior – the auditorium at one end and the gymnasium at the other. The building features a hip roof with slate shingles, gabled dormers and octagonal cupolas; and Flemish-bond variant brickwork with corner quoins and a water table. It was replaced by the Bassett High School in 1979, and continued to operate as a middle school. The school closed in 2004.

Spring Valley Rural Historic District is a national historic district located near Fries, Grayson County, Virginia, United States. The district encompasses 184 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, and 1 contributing object in the wooded and agricultural northeastern corner of Grayson County. It includes mostly frame or log structures, with a few brick buildings, and several well-preserved examples of early-19th century log dwellings still in use.

Old Turner Place, also known as King's Grant One, is a historic home located near Henry, Henry County, Virginia. It was built about 1804, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, log dwelling with a gable roof and massive gable end chimneys. Also on the property is a contributing smokehouse.

Edgewood is a historic home located at Stanleytown, Henry County, Virginia. It was built about 1830, and consists of a projecting two-story, three-bay, pedimented, Greek-temple-form central mass and two-story flanking wings, in the Greek Revival style. The house features three semi-integral end chimneys, and a one-story front porch.

WODY (1160 kHz) is a non-commercial radio station licensed to Fieldale, Virginia, serving Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia. WODY is owned and operated by Positive Alternative Radio, Inc. It simulcasts a Southern Gospel radio format from WXRI Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as part of the Joy FM network. It formerly aired programming from ESPN Radio before being bought by Positive Alternative Radio. The network is listener-supported, with the stations holding on-air fundraisers to support the Joy FM ministry.

Grassdale Farm is a historic home located at Spencer, Henry County, Virginia. It was built about 1860, and is a two-story, center-passage-plan frame dwelling with Greek Revival and Greek Revival style influences. Two-story ells have been added to the rear of the main section, creating an overall "U" form. Also on the property are a variety of contributing buildings and outbuildings including a kitchen, smokehouse, cook's house, log dwelling, and office / caretaker's house dated to the 19th century; and a garage, playhouse, poultry house, two barns, greenhouse, Mack Watkin's House, granary and corn crib, and Spencer Store and Post Office dated to the 1940s-1950s. Grassdale Farm was once owned by Thomas Jefferson Penn, who built Chinqua-Penn Plantation outside Reidsville, North Carolina, where the Penn tobacco-manufacturing interests were located.

R.L. Stone House, also known as Ithaca, is a historic estate located near Bassett, Henry County, Virginia. It was built between 1930 and 1938, and is a two-story, brick dwelling in the Classical Revival style. It sits on a full raised basement and has a slate-covered hipped roof. Also on the property are a contributing garage and workshop, stable, and water pump.

Marshall Field and Company Clubhouse, also known as Fieldcrest Lodge, is a historic clubhouse located at Fieldale, Henry County, Virginia. It was built in 1917, and is a two-story, Tudor Revival style building. It is constructed of native Henry County fieldstone, box beams, pebble dash stucco, and red terra cotta roof tile. Also on the property are a contributing carriage house, manager's house with a matching shed structure and a three-stall barn, and a regulation size tennis court. The clubhouse was built by Marshall Field and Company to house important figures visiting the Fieldcrest Mills.

Belleview is a historic plantation house located near Ridgeway, Henry County, Virginia. It was built about 1783, and is a two-story, five-bay, frame dwelling with a gable roof. It has an original two-story ell and a sun porch and one-story wing added in the mid-1950s. The front facade features a two-tier portico supported by slender Greek Ionic order columns.

Eltham Manor is a historic estate located near Bassett, Henry County, Virginia. It was built in 1936 by William McKinley Bassett, and is a Colonial Revival brick dwelling. The manor is named for the Burwell Bassett family home, "Eltham Plantation", in Eltham, Virginia, that burned in 1879. It consists of a 2+1⁄2-story, five-bay, central section flanked by two-story wings, connected by cured hyphens to a two-story garage and servant's quarters at the north end and a one-story open-air pavilion at the south end. The front facade features a Doric order portico with smooth two-story columns. Also on the property are a contributing barn (c. 1936) and lake (c. 1936).

Ingleside is a historic house at 500 Mica Road in Henry County, Virginia, north of Ridgeway. It is a two-story wood-frame house with a mix of Greek and Gothic Revival features. It has a basically square shape, with three bays divided by vertical boards that resemble pilasters. Its gables are adorned with Gothic scalloped vergeboard. Its interiors include distinctive painted finishes, include a fireplace mantel painted to resemble gold-veined black marble. The house is believed to have been built in the 1870s by a member of the Penn family, who were recorded as the landowners in the late 1870s.

The Spencer–Penn School is a historic school complex at 30 George Taylor Road in Spencer, Virginia. Its main building, a large brick Colonial Revival building, was built in 1926–27, and is the only surviving non-residential building in the community to be built before World War II. The campus also includes the school's first building, a frame structure built in 1911. The school served the area until 2004, when it was closed by the county school board. The campus is now home to the Spencer–Penn Centre, a non-profit education and special event center.

The Martinsville Fish Dam is a Native American weir in the Smith River near Martinsville, Virginia. The weir is a rough wall of piled rocks in a V shape with the point of the V downstream. At an opening in that point a basket could be used to catch fish that were funneled to that point by the walls of the weir.
