There is no information left on the name of the patron, the architect or the reason for the building of the church. Many opinions exist on the age of the church. While all dating efforts until today have failed, archaeologists managed to define a timeframe within which the church was built. Based on this time frame, the church is placed between the 9th and 11th century.

Βρίσκεται ανατολικά της Καστοριάς σε απόσταση 34,5 χλμ. από το κέντρο της πόλης, 3 χλμ. ανατολικά της Κλεισούρας και 60 χλμ. νότια (οδηγικά μέσω Πεδινό - Βαλτόνερα) από τη Φλώρινα. Είναι χτισμένη σε μια εύφορη κοιλάδα και τις βορειοανατολικούς πρόποδες του όρους Μορίκι σε υψόμετρο 970 μέτρα.

The Church of the Archangel of the Metropolis or Taxiarchis of the Metropolis (Greek: Ιερός Ναός Ταξιάρχη Μητροπόλεως) is a Byzantine church in the medieval old city of Kastoria, in northern Greece. Dedicated to the Archangel Michael, it was built in the 9th or 10th century. The use of ancient spolia indicates that it was possibly built on the remains of an early Christian basilica. The church is a small three-aisled basilica, with a narthex and a dome, added after the original construction was finished. A few traces of its original fresco decoration show similarities with the art of Cappadocia, but are too fragmentary to draw any conclusions. The current fresco series dates from the renovation of the church in 1359/60, and represent a distinctive regional style evident in other churches in Kastoria, but also Ohrid.

Το Σπήλαιο του Δράκου της Καστοριάς βρίσκεται στο νότιο άκρο της χερσονήσου της, στο 3ο χιλιόμετρο του παραλίμνιου δρόμου που οδηγεί από την πόλη στην Ιερά Μονή Μαυριώτισσας. Βρίσκεται στην όχθη της λίμνης Ορεστιάδας και διαθέτει 7 υπόγειες λίμνες, 10 θαλάμους και πέντε σήραγγες. Ο μεγαλύτερος θάλαμος είναι 45 μ. επί 17 μ. και έχει ένα κεντρικό τμήμα που υψώνεται πάνω από δύο πλευρικά τμήματα. Και τα δύο αποτελούνται εν μέρει από λίμνες. Η μέση θερμοκρασία του σπηλαίου είναι 16-18 βαθμούς Κελσίου και η υγρασία 85-90%. Η θερμοκρασία των νερών στις εσωτερικές λίμνες είναι 14 βαθμοί Κελσίου, όταν η λίμνη της Καστοριάς έχει υπό σκιάν 21 βαθμούς Κελσίου. Αποτελεί ένα από τα θεαματικότερα σπήλαια της Ελλάδας. Οφείλει την ονομασία του σε θρύλο.

Η Μονή Αγίου Νικολάου Σλίβενης (Κορομηλιάς) είναι πρώην μοναστήρι της Ιεράς Μητροπόλεως Καστοριάς δυτικά της Καστοριάς σε απόσταση 12 χλμ. από το κέντρο της πόλης και περίπου ενός χιλιομέτρου βορειοανατολικά από τον οικισμό. Κατά τη διάρκεια του Μακεδονικού Αγώνα η μονή έπαιξε σημαίνοντα ρόλο για την περιοχή των Κορεστίων, όπου διαδραματίσθηκαν πολλές ένοπλες συγκρούσεις. Σώμα κομιτατζήδων του Κόλε και Μήτρε Βλάχο πυρπόλησε τις εγκαταστάσεις του μοναστηρίου στις 21 Φεβρουαρίου 1905 και κατακρεούργησαν τον ηγούμενο Άνθιμο Γιοβανόπουλο και ένα μοναχό. Έκτοτε το μοναστήρι περιέπεσε σε περίοδο παρακμής που διαρκεί μέχρι τις μέρες μας, καθώς η μονή παραμένει χωρίς μοναχούς ως μετόχι της Μονής Αγίων Αναργύρων Μελισσοτόπου Καστοριάς.

Η Νέα Κοτύλη είναι ορεινός οικισμός του νομού Καστοριάς. Αναγνωρίστηκε επίσημα ως οικισμός το 1951.
Gramos (Greek: Γράμος, Aromanian: Gramosta) is a remote mountain village and a former municipality in Kastoria regional unit, Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the Nestorio municipality as a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 59.422 km2. Population 10 (2021). The village is a traditional Aromanian (Vlach) settlement, named after the nearby Gramos mountains to its south. It lies very close to the Albanian border. The source of the river Aliakmonas is near Gramos. It had the smallest population of any municipality in Greece at 28 inhabitants in the 2001 Greek census. It was also the least densely populated community or municipality in Greece, at 0.47 inhabitants/km2. A small road connects Gramos with Nestorio, 20 km to its east. Gramos is the nearest village to Lake Gkistova.

Είναι κτισμένη σε μια επίπεδη στενή λωρίδα βαράθρου που καταλήγει στον Στενοπόταμο, παραπόταμο του Αλιάκμονα. Απέχει 8 χλμ. ΒΑ. από το Νεστόριο, 1,5 χλμ. ΝΔ. από την Αγία Άννα. Οφείλει το όνομα Τσούκα στον παλιότερο, εγκαταλελειμμένο πλέον οικισμό, Τσούκα (Αρχάγγελος) που υπήρχε βορειότερα. Στην κορυφή του βαράθρου υπάρχει ο ναός της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής που κτίστηκε μετέπειτα, ενώ δίπλα στο μοναστήρι δημιουργείται ένας μικρός καταρράκτης.

Τα Κουβούκλια είναι ένας μικρός προσφυγικός συνοικισμός ο οποίος βρίσκεται στη μέση του δρόμου από το χωριό Μεσσιανή προς το χωριό Ροδίτης στο Νομό Κοζάνης. Πήρε το όνομά του από την κωμόπολη Κουβούκλια η οποία βρισκόταν δεκαπέντε χιλιόμετρα μακρυά από την Προύσα. Ο Μητροπολίτης Σερβίων και Κοζάνης Διονύσιος έγραψε για τον εν λόγω συνοικισμό: «Όσοι Κουβουκλιώτες ήλθαν στην Κοζάνη, εγκαταστάθηκαν εκεί και με τον ενθουσιασμό της πίστης και της ευσέβειας και με την συνδρομή και των άλλων Κουβουκλιωτών που είναι στην Ελλάδα και όλων των χριστιανών, έκτισαν την εκκλησία του Οσίου Βαραδάτου στις όχθες της λίμνης του Αλιάκμονα, κοντά στη μεγάλη γέφυρα. Είναι λοιπόν μέσα στην Ορθόδοξη πίστη και παράδοση ότι εδώ στον τόπο μας βάλθηκαν οι Χριστιανοί να χτίσουν την εκκλησία του αγίου Βαραδάτου και να αρχίσουν να εορτάζουν πάλι πανηγυρικά τη μνήμη του. Δεν μπορούμε να μην εκτιμήσουμε και επαινέσουμε την προσπάθεια αυτή των λίγων Κουβουκλιωτών της Κοζάνης. Μ’ αυτή την ευσέβεια οι Έλληνες της Μικρασίας και του Πόντου, φορτωμένοι τις εικόνες και τα ιερά σκεύη των εκκλησιών τους, ήλθαν εδώ και ξανάχτισαν τη ζωή τους. Όλα τα ονόματα των πόλεων και των χωριών, όλα τα ήθη και τα έθιμα του λαού, όλος ο ελληνικός και χριστιανικός πολιτισμός πολλών αιώνων, όλα μεταφυτεύτηκαν από τη Μικρασία και τον Πόντο και ξαναζούν εδώ».

National Road 20 (Greek: Εθνική Οδός 20, abbreviated as EO20) is a single carriageway road in northwestern Greece. It links the cities of Ioannina and Kozani via Konitsa and Siatista. It passes through the Ioannina, Kastoria and the Kozani regional units. Since the opening of the A2 motorway (Egnatia Odos), it is no longer the fastest connection between Kozani and Ioannina. The section between Ioannina and Kalpaki is part of the European route E853.

Ο δήμος Σιάτιστας ήταν δήμος του νομού Κοζάνης. Συστάθηκε αρχικά το 1952. Με το πρόγραμμα Καποδίστριας, το 1999 επεκτάθηκε με τη συνένωση γειτονικών κοινοτήτων, που αποτέλεσαν στη συνέχεια τα δημοτικά διαμερίσματα του δήμου. Ο δήμος καταργήθηκε με την εφαρμογή του προγράμματος Καλλικράτης και εντάχθηκε στον νέο δήμο Βοΐου. Βρισκόταν στο νότιο τμήμα του νομού στα σύνορα με τον νομό Γρεβενών. Αποτελούνταν από 3 δημοτικά διαμερίσματα, καταλάμβανε έκταση 158,5 τ.χλμ. και είχε συνολικό πληθυσμό 5.642 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2001). Έδρα του δήμου ήταν η Σιάτιστα.

The town's current population is 12,515 citizens (2021). It lies about 420 kilometres (261 miles) from Athens and about 180 km (112 miles) from Thessaloniki. The municipality's population is 25,905. Grevena has had access to the A2 motorway (Egnatia Odos) since the early 2000s, which now connects Igoumenitsa with Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli at the border with Turkey. Mountains surround the municipality, which is situated by the river Greveniotikos, which itself flows into the Aliakmon. Other significant towns in the municipality are Amygdaliés and Méga Seiríni. Grevena Municipal Museum is located in the town.

The Haliacmon (Greek: Αλιάκμονας, Aliákmonas; formerly: Ἁλιάκμων, Aliákmon or Haliákmōn) is the longest river of Greece, flowing entirely on Greek soil in the region of Macedonia, with a total length of 297 km (185 mi). In Greece there are three rivers longer than Haliacmon: Evros (Greek: Έβρος), Strymonas (Greek: Στρυμόνας), both coming from Bulgaria, and Axios (Greek: Αξιός) coming from North Macedonia, but the length of each one of them in Greek territory is less than that of Haliacmon, which flows entirely in Greece. Haliacmon is the traditional English name for the river, but many sources cite the formerly official Katharevousa version of the name, Aliákmon. Today, the only official variant is the demotic Aliákmonas. It flows through the Greek regions of Western Macedonia (Kastoria, Grevena and Kozani regional units) and Central Macedonia (Imathia and Pieria regional units). Its drainage basin is 8,813 km2 (3,403 sq mi).
Askio (Greek: Άσκιο; Pronunciation: As•ki•o) is a mountain range in the northwestern part of the Kozani and the eastern part of the Kastoria regional units in northern Greece. The elevation of its highest peak, Siniatsiko, is 2,111 m (6,926 ft). There are forests in the northern part. It stretches from the village Kleisoura in the northwest to Xirolimni in the southeast, over a length of about 30 km (19 mi). The nearest mountains are the Verno to the northwest, the Vourinos to the south and the Vermio to the northeast. It is drained by tributaries of the Aliakmonas to the west and south, and towards the Lake Vegoritida to the northeast.
Siatista (Greek: Σιάτιστα) is a town and a former municipality in Kozani regional unit, Western Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Voio, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. It lies 28 kilometres (17 miles) southwest of Kozani. The municipal unit has an area of 158.524 km2, the community 94.426 km2. The 2021 Greek census recorded 5,057 residents in the town and 5,645 in the municipal unit. It was built on the austral slope of the Velia mountain on an (average) height of 930 metres (3,051 feet).

Lake Orestiada or Lake of Kastoria (Greek: Λίμνη Ορεστιάδα) is a lake in the Kastoria regional unit of Macedonia, northwestern Greece. It spreads out in a natural basin, surrounded by mountains and is the remnant of a huge ancient Miocene lake that reached an area of 164 square kilometres and at a depth of 50 meters. Sitting at an altitude of 630 metres, the lake covers an area of 28 square kilometres with a coastline that reaches 34 km. The maximum depth of the lake reaches about 9 meters and the average depth 4.5 meters.

Pindus National Park (Greek: Εθνικός Δρυμός Πίνδου Ethnikós Drymós Píndou), also known as Valia Calda (meaning the Warm Valley in Aromanian), is a national park in mainland Greece, situated in an isolated mountainous area at the periphery of West Macedonia and Epirus, in the northeastern part of the Pindus mountain range. It was established in 1966 and covers an area of 6,927 hectares (17,120 acres). The park's core zone, 3,360 hectares (8,300 acres), covers the greatest part of the Valia Calda valley and the slopes of the surrounding peaks.

Nestorio (Greek: Νεστόριο, Nestório; Macedonian: Нестрам and Bulgarian: Нестрам, Nestram or Нѐсрам, Nésram) is a village and a municipality in the Kastoria regional unit of Western Macedonia, Greece. Nestorio is approximately 28 km (17 mi) southwest of Kastoria, at the banks of the river Aliakmon.
Verno (Greek: Βέρνο) or Vitsi (Greek: Βίτσι) is a forested mountain range in the southern part of the Florina and the northeastern part of the Kastoria regional units in Western Macedonia, northern Greece. The elevation of its highest peak is 2,128 m (6,982 ft). It stretches from the village Trivouno in the northwest to Kleisoura in the southeast, over a length of about 30 km (19 mi). The nearest mountains are the Askio to the southeast, the Baba to the north and the northern Pindus to the southwest. It is drained towards the river Sakoulevas (a tributary of the Crna) to the northeast, and towards the Aliakmonas and Lake Kastoria to the southwest.

Since the 2011 local government reform, it has been a municipal unit of Grevena. It is a seasonal Aromanian (Vlach) village. Located in the Pindus mountains at 1250–1350 metres altitude, its summer population is about 3000 and in the winter there are only a few residents. The 2021 census recorded 73 inhabitants. It is notable as the birthplace of the Manakis brothers, and appears in the opening sequence of the film Ulysses' Gaze. The community of Avdella covers an area of 43.243 km2.

Ο δήμος Σερβίων είναι δήμος του νομού Κοζάνης. Συστάθηκε αρχικά το 1964 και προήλθε από αναγνώριση της πρώην κοινότητας Σερβίων σε δήμο. Το 1999 με την εφαρμογή του προγράμματος Καποδίστριας διευρύνθηκε με τη συνένωση σ' αυτόν παλαιότερων κοινοτήτων της περιοχής, που αποτέλεσαν στη συνέχεια τα δημοτικά διαμερίσματα του δήμου. Ο νέος διευρυμένος δήμος λειτούργησε την περίοδο 1999 -2010 οπότε και καταργήθηκε με την εφαρμογή του προγράμματος Καλλικράτης και εντάχθηκε στον νέο δήμο Σερβίων-Βελβεντού. Βρίσκεται στο ανατολικό τμήμα του νομού στις πλαγιές του Βερμίου και των Πιερίων. Περιελάμβανε 14 δημοτικά διαμερίσματα, καταλάμβανε έκταση 351,1 τ.χλμ. και είχε συνολικό πληθυσμό 10.001 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2001). Με το Πρόγραμμα Κλεισθένης Ι, το 2019 ο δήμος επανασυστάθηκε, με διαφορετική έκταση, περιλαμβάνοντας πλέον τρείς Δημοτικές Ενότητες (Σερβίων, Καμβουνίων και Λιβαδερού). Έδρα του δήμου είναι τα ομώνυμα Σέρβια.
Lake Polyfyto (Greek: Λίμνη Πολυφύτου) is one of the largest artificial lakes in Greece. It was created in 1974 by the construction of the Polyfyto Dam, which impounds the river Aliakmon, by the Public Power Corporation of Greece. The maximum accumulated volume is 1,220×106 m3 (4.3×1010 cu ft). The surface area of the lake is 74 km2 (29 sq mi), and the elevation of the lake surface at maximum filling is 289 m (948 ft). The design capacity of the hydroelectric power station at the dam is 375 MW.
Ο Δήμος Βελβεντού είναι δήμος του νομού Κοζάνης που συστάθηκε αρχικά με το πρόγραμμα Καποδίστριας από τη συνένωση παλαιότερων κοινοτήτων της περιοχής, που αποτέλεσαν στη συνέχεια τα δημοτικά διαμερίσματα του δήμου. Λειτούργησε την περίοδο 1999-2010 οπότε και καταργήθηκε με την εφαρμογή του προγράμματος Καλλικράτης και εντάχθηκε στον νέο δήμο Σερβίων - Βελβεντού. Με το Πρόγραμμα Κλεισθένης Ι, το 2019 ο δήμος επανασυστάθηκε, με την ίδια έκταση. Έδρα του δήμου είναι το ομώνυμο χωριό. Είχε έκταση 126.516 στρέμματα και κατά την απογραφή του 2021 είχε 3.057 κατοίκους.
Η Διοκλητιανούπολις ήταν αρχαία πόλη, που τοποθετείται από τους αρχαιολόγους, στην σημερινή εγγύτερη περιοχή του Άργους Ορεστικού κοντά στον ποταμό Αλιάκμονα και όχι μακριά από τη λίμνη της Καστοριάς, που είχε ήδη εγκαταλειφθεί από τις επιδρομές των Γότθων κατά τον 4ον αιώνα και ήταν ερημωμένη την εποχή της βασιλείας του Ιουστινιανού 527-565, όπως μας ιστορεί ο Προκόπιος. Η πόλη αναφέρεται σπανιότερα και ως Διοκλητιανούπολις Δαρδανίας (Diocletiana in Dardania).

The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle (Greek: Μουσείο Μακεδονικού Αγώνα Καστοριάς) in Kastoria, Macedonia, Greece is housed in a traditional old mansion that belonged to the teacher and fighter Anastasios Pehion (1836–1913). It was inaugurated on 23 May 2010, a project of the "Friends of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle in Kastoria" that was founded in 1993 in the Municipality of Kastoria.

The museum has been operating since 1972, and is run by Harmony (a music and literary society). The two-storey premises were built between the 16th and 17th centuries, and survived in such good condition that the museum was able to open without restoration. All the original furniture is still present.
