Vlorë County

The Islets of Ksamil (Albanian: Ishujt e Ksamilit or Ishujt e Tetranisit), consist of four rocky islets located in the direct proximity to the Ionian Sea in Southern Albania. The village of Ksamil, after whom the islets are named, is located to the east of the islets. Furthermore, the islands are situated within the boundaries of the Butrint National Park.

Laberia (Albanian: Labëria) is a historic region that is roughly situated in southwestern Albania. Its inhabitants are known as Labs (referred to as Albanian: Lab, pl. Lebër, also dial. sing. The Qafa e Vishës bus accident occurred on 21 May 2012, at Qafa e Vishës (Albanian pronunciation: [cafa ɛ viʃəs]) near Himarë, Albania, when a bus plunged 80 metres (260 ft) off a cliff. Most of the victims were students of Aleksandër Xhuvani University of Elbasan. The driver is also believed to have been killed. The students were travelling from Elbasan to Sarandë.

Rips is a location in the southeastern part of Albania where a secondary border crossing point between Albania and Greece is situated.

Porto Palermo Tunnel (Albanian: Tuneli i Porto Palermos) is claimed to be a submarine bunker built in the Socialist People's Republic of Albania during the rule of leader Enver Hoxha. It is situated at the northern end of the bay of Porto Palermo. It is no longer in use as such, but remains in a military restriction zone. Almost certainly its main function was as a homebase for fast attack craft. Unlike submarines, these craft are short range coastal defence vessels that lie hidden during the day near to where they have to operate at night. Albanian Whiskey class submarines were long range vessels and were normally based further from Pashaliman Naval Base in the Bay of Vlore. Retired in 1998, submarines are still located in Pashaliman.

Amonicë oil field is an Albanian oil field that was discovered in 1980. It is situated near the village Amonicë, Sevaster municipal unit, Vlorë County. It is one of the biggest on-shore oil field of Albania. It began production in 1981 and produces oil. Its proven reserves are about 20 million barrels (3.2×10^⁶ m³).

The Cape of Gjuhëz (Albanian: Kepi i Gjuhëzës) is a rocky cape northwest of Karaburun Peninsula as well as the westernmost point of continental Albania. It projects 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi) into the sea in the form of the tongue, thus the origin of its name. The altitudes of the cape slope gradually towards the water, whereas the southern shores form 30 to 40 metres (98 to 131 ft) high steep cliffs that fall directly to the Ionian Sea. The cape lacks vegetation, while limestone rocks, highly eroded by Karst are spread over whole the area.

Dëllënjë is a village in Albania, part of the former Novoselë municipality, in the Vlorë County. At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality Vlorë. It is located 31km away from Vlorë city (north direction) and 4km away from the Adriatic seashore. It is the last village along the Vjosë river.

The Canyon of Gjipe (Albanian: Kanioni i Gjipesë) is a bay and calcareous canyon located between Dhërmi and Vuno carved by the Ionian Sea in Vlorë County, Albania. The canyon occupies a length of 800 metres (2,600 ft) and a width that can varies between 10 metres (33 ft) and 20 metres (66 ft). It represents a narrow strait, created by the activity of the brook flowing through its narrow pass. There are numerous rock formations along the canyon, including a number of caves.

Rrëza e Kanalit (lit. 'Channel's Radius') is a mountain located on the Ionian Coast of Albania, within the boundaries of Vlorë municipality. It stretches between the Karaburun Peninsula in the northwest and Llogara Pass in the southeast, at a length of 23 km (14 mi) and a width of 3–7 km (1.9–4.3 mi). Its highest peak, Shën Iliu, reaches a height of 1,499 m (4,918 ft).

The Battle of Saseno took place on 14 August 1264 near Saseno Island off the coast of Albania, between a fleet of the Republic of Genoa and a trade convoy of the Republic of Venice, during the War of Saint Sabas. Since the outbreak of the war in 1256, the Genoese had experienced only defeats in direct confrontations with the Venetian navy, and had therefore resorted to raiding the Venetian commerce convoys to the Levant that were critical to the Venetian economy.

Himarë (Albanian definite form: Himara; Greek: Χιμάρα, Chimara or Χειμάρρα, Cheimarra) is a municipality and region in Vlorë County, southern Albania. The municipality has a total area of 571.94 km² (220.83 sq mi) and consists of the administrative units of Himarë, Horë-Vranisht and Lukovë. It lies between the Ceraunian Mountains and the Albanian Ionian Sea Coast and is part of the Albanian Riviera. The traditionally perceived borders of the Himarë region gradually shrank during the Ottoman period, being reduced to the town of Himarë and the villages of the coastline (Bregdet in Albanian), generally including only Palasë, Dhërmi, Pilur, Kudhës, Vuno, Iljas and Qeparo.

Cestria or Kestria (Ancient Greek: Κεστρία), also known as Ilium or Ilion (Ἴλιον), or Troja (Τροΐα), was a town in ancient Epirus. Its district was called Cestrine or Kestrine (Κεστρίνη) and Kestrinia (Κεστρινία), and was located in Chaonia, separated from Thesprotia by the river Thyamis. It is said to have received its name from Cestrinus, son of Helenus and Andromache, having been previously called Cammania or Kammania (Καμμανία). The principal town of the district was Cestria, but its more usual name appears to have been Ilium or Troja, in memory of the Trojan colony of Helenus. In the neighbourhood are those fertile pastures, which were celebrated in ancient times for the Cestrinic oxen. The inhabitants of the district were called Κεστρηνοί by the poet Rhianus.

Dhomat e manastirit janë të ndërtuara më vonë. Kjo është një ndër kishat më të mëdha dhe më të vjetra të periudhës bizantine që ruan vlera të mëdha. Mure e jashtme janë të ndërtuar nga gurë gëlqerorë të mëdhenj. Dallohet për zbukurimet dhe mozaikët me motive shtazore gjithashtu dhe për zbukurimet me tulla të mureve të jashtëm. Zbukurimet murale janë në forma të ndryshme përmendim: një shqiponjë dy dragoi dhe një luan në njërën anë ndërsa në anën tjetër ndodhet një kafshë mitologjike. Kisha ka një sallë të madhe brenda dhe dy të vogla. Mozaiku i sallës i ruajtur akoma paraqet një dragua me krahë hapur. Kisha ka pasur dy rindërtime në vitet 1793 dhe 1845 këto rindërtime e kanë ndryshuar shumë pamjen e kishës dhe mendohet që të ketë humbur shumë vlera.

Die als Konispol-Höhle bekannte Shpella e Kërçmoit ist eine der Höhlen nahe der südalbanischen Stadt Konispol, in der erstmals in Albanien eine paläolithische und mesolithische Fundstätte in größerem Umfang erforscht wurde. Die Höhle ist etwa 50 m lang, bis zu 6 m tief und hat im Innenraum eine Höhe von bis zu 6 m. Sie liegt auf rund 400 m ü. A. in der Saraqint-Kette, ihre Öffnung weist nach Südwesten.

Çuka e Ajtoit ngrihet mbi një kodër elipsoidale rreth 330 m mbi nivelin e detit, në afërsi të fshatit Çiflik, rreth 16 km në jug të Butrintit dhe në distancë rreth 5 km nga bregu i Jonit. Kalaja përbën një ndërtim të periudhës antike, e cila kishte si funksion primar mbrojtjen e Butrintit dhe banorëve të tij në rast sulmesh. Pozita strategjike ku ishte ngritur kalaja, pikërisht aty ku kalonte rruga Epidamn – Aulonë – Buthrot – Actia Nicopolis – Ambraki dhe kontrolli mbi fushën e Vrinës (Kestrinës antike) dhe Konispolit, krijonte kushte të përshtatshme për zhvillimin e veprimtarive ekonomike, si bujqësia, frutikultura dhe blegtoria. Të dhënat arkeologjike si teknika e ndërtimit të mureve dhe materiali i lëvizshëm tregojnë përdorimin e kalasë në vazhdimësi nga periudha e Antikitetit (shek. IV – III p. Kr.) deri në shek. IV m. Kr. që përkon me fortifikimin e Antikitetit të Vonë. Kalaja ngrihet mbi një kodër elipsoidale, duke shfrytëzuar mbrojtjen natyrale të pjerrësisë së terrenit. Sipërfaqja e rrethuar prej mureve është rreth 7,5 ha, duke e renditur Çukën e Ajtoit në një prej qyteteve të mesëm. Kurtinat e murit nuk përforcohen nga kulla, por muret formojnë zigzage dhe 7 dhëmbësharre, të shpërndara pa ndonjë rregull të veçantë.

It is inhabited by ethnic Greeks and is one of two municipalities in Albania in which Greeks form a majority, alongside Dropull. The seat of the municipality is the village Dërmish. The total population is 10,529 (2011 census), in a total area of 444.28 km².

It was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Armen, Brataj, Kotë, Selenicë, Sevaster and Vllahinë, that became municipal units. The Karaburun Peninsula (Albanian: Gadishulli i Karaburunit), also known as Cape Linguetta, is a peninsula of the Mediterranean Sea located in Southern and Southeastern Europe, which is almost completely surrounded by both the Adriatic Sea to the north and the Ionian Sea to the south. It is located in Southwestern Albania along the Albanian Ionian Sea Coast, whereas the Strait of Otranto separates it from Italy. The Strait of Mezokanal separates the peninsula from Sazan Island, while in the southeast stretches the Bay of Vlorë. In classical antiquity, its name was the "Akrokeraunian Peninsula" (Ακροκεραύνιο ακρωτήριο), whose name was derived from the eponymous Akrokeraunian mountains; this is because, in terms of geology, the Rrëza e Kanalit on the peninsula represent the continuation of said mountains, which are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that extends parallel to the Ionian Sea. Karaburun peninsula is sometimes called Ceraunian Peninsula due to the name of the mountain range. Formed during the mesozoic era of the cretaceous and paleogene period, the crests of the mountain range form a northwest-southeast line with a series of distinct peaks along its irregular structure that are broken apart by steep and unequally slopes. The highest peaks are namely, the Maja Çaderës, Maja e Flamurit, Maja e Koretës and Maja e Ilqes.

Amantia (Ancient Greek: Ἀμάντια, Ἀβάντια; Latin: Amantia) was an ancient city and the main settlement of the Amantes, traditionally located in southern Illyria in classical antiquity. In Hellenistic times the city was either part of Illyria or Epirus. In Roman times it was included within Epirus Nova, in the province of Macedonia. The site has been identified with the village of Ploçë, Vlorë County, Albania. Amantia was designated as an archaeological park on 7 April 2003 by the government of Albania.

At the 2015 local government reform, it became part of the Himarë municipality. The village is inhabited by ethnic Albanians, many of whom have traditionally been Bektashi. In Borsh, the Lab dialect of Albanian is spoken.

It is the largest settlement and the seat of the municipality of Himarë. The town is populated predominantly by an ethnic Greek community.

Fterrë (Albanian definite form: Fterra) is a village in the former commune of Lukovë, Vlorë County, southern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality Himarë. It is located in a side valley of the Albanian Riviera, within the region of Kurvelesh and 10 km northeast of Borsh. The village is inhabited by Muslim Albanians.

Llogara National Park (Albanian: Parku Kombëtar i Llogarasë/Llogorasë) is a national park centered on the Ceraunian Mountains along the Albanian Riviera in southwestern Albania, spanning a surface area of 1,769 ha (17.69 km²). The park's terrain includes large alpine meadows, vertical rock faces, precipices and dense forests. Most area of the park is covered by forests and was established in 1966 to protect several ecosystems and biodiversity of national importance. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the park as Category II. The region has been recognised as an important Bird and Plant Area, supporting significant number of species.

Oricum (Ancient Greek: Ὤρικον, Ὤρικος or Ὠρικός; Latin: Oricum or Oricus; Albanian: Oriku or Orikum) was a harbor on the Illyrian coast that developed in an Ancient Greek polis at the south end of the Bay of Vlorë on the southern Adriatic coast. It was located at the foot of the Akrokeraunian Mountains, the natural border between ancient Epirus and Illyria. Oricum later became an important Roman city between the provinces of Epirus Vetus and Epirus Nova in Macedonia. It is now an archaeological park of Albania, near modern Orikum, Vlorë County. Oricum holds such a strategic geographical position that the area has been in continuous usage as a naval base from antiquity to the present-days.

Sazan Island (Albanian definite form: Ishulli i Sazanit) is an Albanian uninhabited island in the Mediterranean Sea. The largest of Albania's islands, it is a designated military exclusion zone; it lies in a strategically important location between the Strait of Otranto and the mouth of the Bay of Vlorë, marking the border between the Adriatic and Ionian seas.

The Shushicë or Vlora river is a river in southern Albania, and a tributary of the Vjosë. Its source is in the Vlorë County, near the village Kuç, municipality Himarë. It flows generally northwest through Brataj, Kotë and Shushicë and flows into the Vjosë near Armen, northeast of Vlorë.

Phoenice or Phoenike (Ancient Greek: Φοινίκη) was an ancient Greek city in Epirus and capital of the Chaonians. It is located high on an almost impregnable hill commanding the fertile valley below and near the modern town of the same name, Finiq, in southern Albania. It was the wealthiest city in Epirus and had the strongest walls until the Roman conquest. It was the location of the Treaty of Phoenice which ended the First Macedonian War. The city is part of an archaeological park.

Orikum is a town and a former municipality in Vlorë County, southwestern Albania. With the 2015 local government reform, it became a subdivision of the municipality Vlorë. It was named after the ancient city Oricum, which was located 4 km west of modern Orikum. The population at the 2011 census was 5,503. The municipal unit consists of the town Orikum and the villages Dukat Fushë, Dukat, Tragjas and Radhimë.

Ai ndodhet në jug të qytetit të Vlorës, në afërsi të portit. Butrint National Park (Albanian: Parku Kombëtar i Butrintit) is a national park in Vlorë County, southern Albania. It is located 18 kilometres (11 mi) south of Sarandë. The park encompasses 9,424 hectares (94.24 km²) of hilly terrain with freshwater lakes, wetlands, salt marshes, open plains, reed beds and islands. The park's significance for conservation is reflected in the large number of species with over 1,200 different animals and plants. Its mandate includes the protection of the lake and lagoon of Butrint, the natural channel of Vivari, the islands of Ksamil and as well the archaeological site, that provides valuable remains of ancient civilisations.

Vuno is a village in the municipality of Himarë, Vlorë County, Albania. It is situated along the road that connects the center of Himarë with the village of Dhërmi on the Albanian Riviera. The population of Vuno is exclusively composed of Orthodox Albanians.

Dhërmi (Albanian definite form: Dhërmiu; Greek: Δρυμάδες, Drymádes) is a village in Vlorë County, Albania. It is part of the municipality of Himarë. The village lies 42 kilometers south of the city of Vlorë and 69 kilometers north of the southern city of Sarandë. It is built on a slope of the Ceraunian Mountains at approximately 200 meters in altitude, and comprises three neighborhoods: Gjilek, Kondraq, Kallami, and Dhërmi itself. The mountains descend to the southwest into the Ionian coast and Corfu in the distance to the south. Nearby is the village of Palasë. The local inhabitants of Dhërmi are ethnic Greeks that mainly speak a variant of the Greek Himariote dialect, and partly the Tosk Albanian dialect. During the last decade, the coastal area has seen a boom in the construction of accommodation facilities, such as wooden villa complexes.

Porto Palermo Castle (Albanian: Kalaja e Porto Palermos) is an Ottoman castle near Himarë in southern Albania. It is situated in the bay of Porto Palermo, a few kilometers south of Himarë along the Albanian Riviera. The area together with Llamani beach will be proclaimed a protected area holding the status of Protected Landscape by the Albanian Government. It is the most well preserved garrison erected by Ali Pasha in the region.

It was founded in 1994 as Vlorë University of Technology Ismail Qemali. As of 2014, it offers degrees in economics, public health, and humanities, in addition to engineering and technology.

The Llogara Pass (Albanian: Qafa e Llogarasë); (also Llogora in local dialect) is a high mountain pass within the Ceraunian Mountains along the Albanian Riviera. It connects the Dukat Valley in the north with Himarë in the south. Orikum is the nearest city on the northern side of the pass and the village of Dhërmi in the south.

At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality of Sarandë. The population as of the 2023 census is 2,731, while according to the Civil Offices it was 9,137 in 2018. The municipal unit consists of the villages Ksamil and Manastir. During the communist era, the coastal village of Ksamil was built in 1966 and is located south of Sarandë off the road to Butrint.

The monastery was erected during the 6th century AD and possibly became for at least one millennium the most important pilgrimage site in the Ionian Sea region. The name of the monastery (Agioi Saranta in Greek meaning Forty Saints) was transferred to the adjacent city of Onchesmos. During the People's Republic of Albania (1944-1991) the site was transformed into a military installation. Today only a part of the side walls of its basilica type church survive.

The Hajji Bendo Mosque (Albanian: Xhamia e Haxhi Bendos) or Haji Bedo Mosque (Xhamia e Sopotit) is an Ottoman-era former Sunni mosque, that was built before the 17th century inside the Borsh Castle on the Sopot hill of Himara, Albania. The former mosque was badly damaged in the 20th century by the Greeks, further damaged during the Communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha in 1967, and remains in a ruined state. The former mosque was designated as a Cultural Monument of Albania.

A 1993 study by Leonidas Kallivretakis found that the total population of the commune was 889, all Orthodox Albanians. Sopik has been effected heavily by immigration, in 2022 there were around 100 inhabitants in the village and only 11 children.

The Llogara Tunnel is a tunnel located in the south of Albania about 20 km from Vlora. The tunnel that cuts through the Llogara National Park, has a length of 6 kilometers and is the longest in the country. It is expected to significantly improve travel times between the Albanian Riviera and other parts of the country.
